1.) Birds don't have hands!
2.) Most birds can actually fly!

Don Rosa once drew Donald, Scrooge and HD&L in the shape of real Ducks -
They looked totally different.
Anyway the Ducks in Duckburgs act like humans, not like ducks.

Unfortunately, none of the images are uplaoded. I have revamped
most all of them, and when I return from Shanghai to California
I hope to upload them then. I had expected to be able to do some
of the upload in May, but due to the SARS epidemic, I have been

Sorry.

It's my understanding that she is the equivalent to the JW's
Grand Mogul. She is the Bigger female character depicted in
the back of the picture wearing green. She was also part of
the special CARL BARKS collectors' card series released by
Gladstone.

I put that picture together so it is only a work in progress. I
threw all the characters together in order to ask these questions
and have a reference to work with. If Lapo & Snozzie are the
same character then we should probably make that more clear in
the INDUCKS.

I certain about Alvin and Newton, but I thought I had seen Chuck
in an early Goldkey JW issue also. Maybe it was just a look-alike
and not actually Chuck.

First of all, when Paul Murray said "I did everything else (than write the
stories)(sic), he meant everything else that the artists do - not colouring
(which was always done at Western publishing (not by the work-at-home pencilers
and inkers).
Actually Ehapa IS an Egmont publisher (a subsidiary company). I've been told
that Egmont owns 50 or 51% of Ehapa. Ehapa has to follow the rules for
Egmont "franchise" publishers. It IS true that they have SOME discretion as to
what they print, but must follow several general Egmont rules. I'm sure David
G. can tell us more about that.
Barks drew Huey Dewey and Louie wearing their caps sideways, and pulled down
over their eyes. Those ways might be considered "silly", if backwards is
considered "silly". Perhaps backwards is not silly, but actually functional.
Wearing the brim over the back of one's neck, may help protect it from becoming
sunburnt. perhaps the skin on the back of the neck is more prone to skin
cancer and especially the deadly melanoma. So, perhaps they are extremely
serious geniouses?! The greatness of Barks' universe is that Donald's nephews
didn't always act the same way (serious). If they HAD always been serious
little boyscouts, I would have thrown such comics to the floor and jumped up
and down on them and used them for kindling! Barks had Huey, Dewey, and
Louie's characters acting like little boys (albeit, often wise above their
years): sometimes spoiled, naughty, selfish, silly and very childlike, and at
other times wise, responsible, knowledgeable, and yes, - even SERIOUS! They are
well rounded-like REAL PEOPLE! THAT is why we love them! You are INCORRECT, if
you say that Ehapa's portraying the Nephews as modern and childlike refutes
Barks' image of them.
By the way, I have severly slowed down my Disney story production to write a
children's book series which includes a character who is a "goody-two-
shoes" "boyscout" type. He is serious to a fault, always right, and always
telling people when they are incorrect, or doing wrong. He is COMPLETELY
INSUFFERABLE! He is the character you "love to hate" - even more than an evil
villain. We wouldn't want to think of Huey, Dewey and Louie in THAT way????-
would we????
About new characters. I love seeing new characters added to fill out Duckburg
and the Duck and Mouse universes. I want to bring in several new characters
myself. I think with all the production of the various publishers, there is a
lot of room for that -EVEN if they might not match the Barks and/or Rosa
Universes-or EVEN conflict with them. I myself would try hard to make sure not
to specifically CONFLICT with Barks-but that should not be a criterion for all
stories. Lots of current young readers are open to anything that occurs in
well-written, logical stories. If I read a great story that is well drawn, and
it shows something that conflicts with Rosa's "History of Scrooge", I can still
enjoy it. I'm sure there are a lot of other Disney Comics fans who feel the
same way. There is a lot of room for all sorts of creative production that
follows only the most basic definitions of The Duck Universe.

To sum up my opininion regarding the species of the Ducks:
(apes <-> humans) = (ducks <-> Ducks)
The Ducks are obviously NOT humans - and neither are they ducks.
And why would Barks have chosen to show them as ducks if the really were
humans? If everything else Barks shows is supposed to be 100% correct
(an opinion I do not share): why distrust him here?

Not so very rare, is it? Most parrots for instance mate for life (most
often, except for a funny meat eating parrot from New Zealand, the Kea).
Besides, I don't see the ducks as non-monogamous - how many halfsiblings
have we met? Both Donald and $crooge have stuck to their loves, and
haven't changed. ok, so Donald has been dating some others, but not for
long, and Daisy is always the default date.
> 1.) Birds don't have hands!
Donald's hands were more winglike in the beginning, but turned into hands
later on... To put it the other way around then: Humans don't have beaks!
birds at least have hand features in the skeleton, but a beak is a lot
more different feature...
> 2.) Most birds can actually fly!
Not tame ducks (?). Not tame geese, that I know! Penguins, chicken, Kiwi,
Dodo (extinct), ostrich, among others don't.
Duckburgian ducks have cars, so it seems they've given up flying (which
would be a riddle to me - I'd love to be able to fly), or they are
among those who don't because they don't have to...
> Anyway the Ducks in Duckburgs act like humans, not like ducks.
yep! But I still argue that they hatch... (it's not
so unlike mammals - still eggs, just that they have harder shells. The
difference between mammals and egg-animals is the way they feed the
young ones, btw)

Though I've seen this debate pass through this list several times
over the years, for the most part I've stayed out of it, however,
I would like to mention one thing.
*AFAIK both comics and cartoons seem to agree that the Ducks are
HATCHED from eggs.*
I can honestly admit that I have most definitely NOT read all
Disney "Duck" comics so I may have missed a reference or two,
but in my experience reading them, I have ONLY seen actual
depictions of Ducks "hatching" from eggs. This has also been
their depiction in cartoons.
It never struck me as odd. I mean, they are "ducks", even though
they act like humans, they still have all the physical attributes
of birds, so what's the harm in letting them hatch? It's not like
being "hatched" makes them somehow inferior in some way. We're
talking about a mythical/fantasy world where the normal rules
don't necessarily apply, or are bent quite frequently. Once they
do hatch, of course they are completely cared for in the manner
of human children.
Of course, I know of no absolute rule that states the Ducks "hatch"
or any absolute rule that they are born from their mother's womb.
About the closest animal in "real life" would probably be the
Platypus, a mammal that looks like a furry duck and lays eggs, but
nurtures it's young like a mammal.
In any case, is there really any proof in comics that Ducks are
"born" rather than "hatched"? If so, is there any stated policy
from Egmont or any official Disney source that clearly indicates
that all references to Ducks having been "hatched" in past stories
are now blasphemy? If there are stories indicating "birth", then
the best we can say is that we have conflicting data on how Ducks
come into the world.
Otherwise, I'm perfectly fine thinking that Donald and his relatives,
as well as Gyro, Jose, Panchito, Clara Cluck and any other anthro-
pomorphic bird-character was "hatched" from an egg. This, IMHO, does
not change their understood status as a human-like character, but
rather just indicates their starting point in the world.
I don't understand the harm in letting Ducks be hatched in a world
populated Ducks, Mice, Pigs, Chickens, Bears, and Dogs who act like,
and vaguely resemble, humans.

That's not the point. I also dislike a little bit something that contradicts
Barks-tradition, but if you create Disney comics you can invent as many
previously unknown relatives as you wish. With clever scripting you can even
create funny situations, which might be for example like from some Dickens
novel; when revealed hidden secret brings out new half-brother.. or anything
like that.
