If you all want, I'm willing to allow my Disney message board to be used
for this purpose. The only thing I ask is that the discussions stay civil
and use little or no obscentity if possible.

The board has been in existence since January 1, 2001 for the purpose of
discussion of Disney related stuff, but the traffic varies. It's been slow
lately and I'd love to see some traffic there.

Here is the address.

http://members3.boardhost.com/DisneyComics/

The board could also be used as a place to display Disney-related images if
you wish to share them with other DCML members.

Thanks,

I have been using the message board software "phorum" for some time now.
You might want to check it out, so I created a DCML test forum on my
website:

http://www.biblioforum.de/forum/list.php?f=21

This is not intended to be the final thing, but you can fully test the
functionality. Please just ignore the (German language) blue navigation
bars to the left and at the top.

The system can also be combined with a mailing list, so anybody who
wants could get messages to the message board via eMail or eMail
digests.

If you like it I can set up a DCML-forum in a Disney Comics related
navigation and design. Please note that this would run on my own (or any
other DCML-member's) server, so it will be completely free of commercial
ads.

Best wishes,

Heh! Sure, it's spam, "good spam" which is very rare. Honestly, I didn't
look at it that way, but reading the mail again it certainly appears
so. Well, at least I didn't write it in HTML, the "product" is free and
it doesn't come with unavoidable "news-letters". Some virtual violence
*is* involved though, hence I have to hit you with a large trout; ask
Harry for further explanation :-)

The German Donaldisten use the same software for their message board:

Interesting, indeed. I don't understand the text, but I see the name
"Mickey" below panel 2. Is this really supposed to be Mickey and Minnie
Mouse?
It's quite hard to believe ;-)

I visited Hungary in 1982 (or 81) and I remember they sold chewing gum with
Disney gags inside. They also had Disney toys and similar stuff. But I
didn't see any regular Disney comics. (Hungary probably was the most liberal
country of the Eastern block in the 1980s)

I also visited Prague in Czechoslovakia and I saw large film posters from
the Jungle Book.
Mateusz, did you get these Disney movies in Poland too?

Yugoslavia had Disney comics at least since the 1960s. But they didn't
belong to the "block", so that's a bit OT.

Dear all,

I just received a mail from one Vincent Balanky, who wrote:

Hello there,

I have come across three drawings of Disney characters that look like
cels.

They are signed "DOHRMAN 78".

I wonder if you have any idea who this Artist is...or any idea what
these are?

I am including several pictures for you. Thanks for any information you
can provide.

Sincerely,
Vincent Balanky

I have placed the three scans at:

Does any of you recognize the art or the name Dohrman?

I read with interest the report from Poland having "Disney" comics back in the late 40's/50's. I found this especially interesting as I remembered me and my family's trip thru Yugoslavia, Romania and Hungary in 1985.

Yugoslavia had a valid license with Disney and issued comics in several languages. Though, neither Romania, nor (indeed surprisingly) the west oriented Hungary had Disney comics. Hence I had to stick with a Lucky Luke album in Hungary, and less in Romania.

I clearly remember Romania having a *tasteless* chewing gum-look a like candy, packed in paper with either Uncle Scrooge, Uncle Donald or the nephews on the front. No sign of copyright and rather poorly drawn, though still in my collection.

I guess many East Bloc countries had comics and/or products based on several Western comic book characters, i.e. Disney's. Anyone out there having a reasonable explaination of why this was done? To attract Western customers?

I just bought two Mickey Mouse Annuals from 1933 and 1935. It's the
first time I've seen or heard about these. Then I looked them up on the
net and found that they were issued from 1930 - until 2003 at least.
For covers see this link.

<http://www.tonystrading.co.uk/galleries/annuals/mickeymouse.htm>

However they both are thick as phone book catalogues. There seems to be
about 500 pages or so in them when you see how thick they are. Then I
got surprised when I opened them. The leaves? (two pages) are as thick
as postcards and completely stiff. So there is only 118 pages in them.
They are in black & white and mostly 1 page gags. Some of the panels are
clearly taken from Gottfredsson but repenciled it seeems to me.

I was very hesitating to buy them because they were quite expensive. I
paid 300 euros for them together. Does anyone here know what is the
value on these books? The 1933 is VG-FN.
The grade on 1935 is VG-FN but the front cover is very dirty, that is
dark as if there is some kind of soot on it or something. The back cover
however is bright red as it should be. There is the same image on the
front and back cover.
Are they rare ?

You are using the smiley in a way no-one else is using it.
I'd say it's much easier to adjust your own habits to the general habit, than having to explain time and again what you actually *mean* when you write something.

You wrote to Martin:

> Even so, that was *not exactly* what I meant!

But it was exactly what you *wrote*!
We (readers) can't guess exactly what you mean. We can only interpret what you *write*.
Things would be easier if what you write is as close as possible to what you mean.

Is the Swedish "Kalle Anka" distributed in Finland every week?
Or do all Swedish-Finns read the Finnish Aku Ankka?

(The last time I asked this to a Finn (10 years ago), the answer
was that there are hardly Swedish-speaking people in Finland...)

I'm in awe, I tried to come up with anyting ObTopic, but couldn't think
of any. :)

You can find Kalle Ankka in the newsstands alongside Aku Ankka, at least
in the Swedish speaking areas (coastal area, more or less). Many do
subscribe to Kalle Anka, although I grew up with Aku Ankka, which in my
very unbiased opinion is of course the only right choice and much better
than the Swedish version. (duck and run :)

Among my classmates (some 20 years ago) the distribution seemd to
slightly be in favor of Kalle Anka, but I'm sure it depends very much on
the area, as in some areas the kids are more bilingual at a young age
than in others.

BTW. The "product is free" makes it look even more like spam. :-)

Sure. At least in western part of the Finland where I live. At least biggest
kiosks and book shops have them.

Huh? Well, people who speak *only* Swedish and not Finnish at all are in
minority, but still...
