Don Rosa was the only creator who was loyal to the Barkses canonicity.I'm sad that he retired leaving unsolved issues in the duck universe.
I have decided to follow the policy ''if you want something to be done,do it yourself''.So,i'll write the conclusion of the legend.I can't do it as a comic,
since i don't posess the slightest drawing ability.A 4 year old draws better than me,no exaggeration. But,i can always write it as a fanfic. After that,if
someone wants to turn it into a comic,he's free to do so.
To begin with,i'll sum up all the rules...
-In one of Rosa's last stories,Matilda said she hadn't seen Scrooge for 25 years. From Scrooge's biography,we know she had last seen him in 1930.
This forces us to place this story in 1955.With the nephews never seeming older than their teens,we can't use any later year. So,this is rule number
one.All Barks' and Rosa's Scrooge stories are strictly placed in the period 1947 to 1955.
-Every other creators' story is considered non canon and never happened.
-In the twelveth episode of Scrooge's biography, the way the nephews behave indicates to me they're at least 7 years old. So,i have their birthdate in
1940.
-In the twelveth episode,Donald states that, when he saw Scrooge in 1930,he was younger than the nephews(at least that's what he says in my
country's translation,i don't know if it's an error).So,i have his birthdate in 1924.
Well,i got bored with writing the stuff above,so i'll start my story next time.

I hate to tell you this, don rosa is the best, but in Disney comics there is no such thing as canon. Every writer goes his own way. You could even ignore Barks if you wanted to, although that wouldn't get you very far. An Italian Disney comic where Scrooge has a multi-colored money bin with a dome and battles his rival Rockerduck is just as canon as a DuckTales comic where Donald is in the navy, the nephews live with Scrooge in a huge mansion with Webby and Mrs. Beakley. (Ironically, Rosa views DuckTales as fiction within the Duck universe.)
A Disney comic story is usually only canon within itself. What I mean is, the only thing you can be sure that really happened in a story is what's happening in the story itself. (The exceptions are miniseries, such as DoubleDuck, or the entire work of Don Rosa, which are more linked together.)
No matter how hard you try, you can never be 'loyal to Barks' canon', because there was none. Barks never had it in mind, and he sometimes contradicts himself. Rosa had to ignore some details, and simply missed others. Most other writers don't even bother. There is no canon, only characters. (And even then... think Rosa's Scrooge VS Barks' Scrooge VS Guido Martina's Scrooge.)

TO JENSEN:Due to Gyro,Duckburg was always a step ahead of the rest of the world in terms of technology.About hippies,i don't know, but it's a minor
thing.
PART 1
Our story begins a night in 1955,soon after the events in McDucks' castle and the discovery of its immense treasure.Since he made peace with
Matilda, his sisters moved back to the bin, along with Quackmore,Hortense's husband.Matilda also used to have a husband, but he died a few years ago.
They never had any children, for they turned out to have fertility problems.
Right now,Scrooge and his sisters are sitting in the living room, only the three of them, chatting, after so many decades.
Scrooge:I've missed you so much, girls. And i'm no longer ashamed to admit it.I feel so relieved now that i've got rid of that stupid "pride" of mine i've
had all my life.
Matilda:We've missed you too,Scrooge...
Scrooge:You know, when i burnt that African village,i regret it almost right away.I wanted to run after you and apologize, but, then,i got absorbed by
the building of my empire.I regret not having immediately apologized.I regret so many of the decisions i've made in my life.If i hadn't been such a
coward...such an ashole...our father might have seen grandchildren before dying.
Hortense:Hehe, you're referring to the owner of the gold hairlock, right?
Scrooge stands up surprised.
Scrooge:What the...How do you know about the hair?
Matilda:What's wrong with you,Scrooge?Of course we know.Me and Hortense discovered it,when we were about to come to Duckburg, for the first time
Scrooge:You did what?...Oh,that's right. My memory isn't what it used to be.
Scrooge remembers the scene in the castle, with his sisters discovering the hairlock among Scrooge's possesions and teasing him.
Hortense:We never asked you Scrooge, what happened with that lady? Why didn't you get together?
Scrooge:Long story.
Hortense:We've nowhere to go.
Scrooge takes a breath and starts. It's hard for him reliving those things. He finally tells everything.About the moments he spent with Goldie during the
gold rush and about the times he met her in the recent past.
Hortense:Wow!So,she came to your place, just like that, kissed you and told you she'll be expecting you?
Scrooge:Yeah,that happened three years ago.
Hortense:So,why didn't you go?
Scrooge:Good question. That's what i've been asking myself all those years. And i always give myself the same answer.
Matilda:Which is...?
Scrooge:That it's a good question!
Both his sisters laugh.
Hortense:Ok,seriously bro,why don't you do it?
Scrooge:Well,i'm 88...isn't it a little too late for such things?
Hortense:Oh,come on bro. It's never too late. You have the right to be happy.
Matilda:Yeah,we'll take care of everything here.Don't you trust us?
Scrooge:It's not that...
The businessman leaves the room, without saying anything else. The whole night,he's thinking over his sister's words "It's never too late".
Next morning, the two sisters and Hortense's husband are sitting in the dining room, having breakfast.Scrooge enters. He has an unusually fierce look.
Matilda:You slept until late. That's so unlikely of you.
Scrooge:No,i didn't sleep at all!Listen sis,tell Quackerfast that,from now on,you're the bosses in here.
Hortense:You mean that...
Scrooge nods. His sisters jump and yell in joy.Scrooge notices a newspaper on the table.
Scrooge:Wow,you bought a newspaper?
Matilda:Well, some people spend a few dimes to buy a newspaper, you know.
Scrooge:Let's read it,since it's free.
Quackermore slams his punch on the paper, preventing Scrooge from taking it.
Quackermore:This is mine!
Hortense:IT'S JUST A FACKING PIECE OF PAPER,YOU DOUCHEBAG.
Quackermore:MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS,CONCEITED OLD WITCH.
Hortense is about to say something, but Quackermore kisses her lips. It's a long, passionate kiss. The last male McDuck is watching them in jealousy.
They remind him of himself with Goldie.
Matilda:Err,bro...i think you have their permission to take the paper.
Scrooge picks it up,wanting to read at least the financial column. However, what he's about to read shall make him reconsider his plans.
Meanwhile,Gyro is having a surprising visitor. When he opens the door,he sees Gladstone. And he's crying! That's probably the first time anyone sees
the legendary, immune to any form of unhappiness Gladstone sheding tears. What brought him to that condition?Stay tuned.

Seriously, it's one thing to pick and choose what particular aspects of Disney-comic-dom you personally want to take seriously, but when you start making proclamations from on high about The Way It Is, people will start to get annoyed, and rightly so.

I do want to state for the record though: Rosa disregarded a LOT of Barks concepts that he just thought were, well, stupid. Space stories, the sliding timeline, Bolivar appearing without an origin story, the hourglass story, Mrs. Pennywise (I believe that was her name, the one with the promissory note from Scrooge), among others. Heck, he just outright screwed up with "The Golden River", with Scrooge outright stating that he was a rotten kid, and the Life and Times saying otherwise.
On top of that, he didn't remain internally consistent within his own stories, either, either through simple contradictions or conflicting motivations.
He's still my favorite comic book author, and it's generally Rosa and Barks' versions of the Ducks I find interesting, not the idea of the characters in and of themselves. But it is an ENORMOUS mistake to think that their styles are at all synonymous with each other, or that their storytelling styles are synchronized. They complement each other in many ways, creating a broader view of the characters and universe than one of the pair brings on their own, but... nope. Rosa definitely does not follow Barks' style or canon, even if he built on it.

Long a go I use to consider Bark and Rosa to be the one true canon but as more time wet by I realise that I love so many non-Barks and Rosa characters and stories that It dosen't matter.
Plus - we may have some fans consider characters like Fethry or Brigitha as not part of the canon but at the same time Arpin Lusene isn't a Barks character so it would be hypocrisy seeing his real and they aren't.
Each artist has his own unique canon. Rosa just so happend only sticking to what Barks created... then agian he used Jose Carioca and Panchito who Barks never used or mentioned he like... or for example Rosa used Von Drake who Barks hated (from what I recall) and only used him once when editor ask him to...
So yhe, there is no real canon other then super-basic stuff like Scrooge was born poor but now his rich etc.

Reading that last post, which collects all of Rosa's comments about Miss Penny Wise on the DCML in chronological order, I can't escape the feeling that Rosa was simply initially unaware of this character (and assumed that the name referred to Miss Quackfaster), then chose to attribute the fact that she is never mentioned in L&T to his opinion that she is too"off-the-wall" to be taken seriously. I wonder if he would have found a way to incorporate her into his version of the McDuck mythos if he had known about her when he was writing L&T. Could she somehow be connected to Scrooge's shameful behavior in the events recounted in "Voodoo Hoodoo"? Or another less-than-honorable business deal he may have been involved with? Rosa doesn't like the idea that Scrooge and Goldie ever had eyes for anyone else, but could she indeed have been a romantic partner? I think there's potential for a great story here.

It would, indeed, have been quite a story, if Scrooge McDuck were to have had an affair and consumated a sexual act out-of-species! Perhaps he even broke some laws of sodomy, which even existed at the time. Would the statute of limitations apply, or would he be found guilty of breaking an existing law, and be sent to prison? I don't believe that the comments relating to the letter that Miss penny Wise possesses involves a debt. Barks merely stated words that logically implied that she could use the note to "ruin him", and that she could gain his entire fortune from revealing its contents. What could be written in that letter that could be so damaging to Scrooge that she could blackmail him for his ENTIRE fortune, and he would turn it over willingly??? What horrible act had he committed against the laws of man (or nature)?
I don't believe it was merely an old debt. Surely Scrooge would have paid off any debt, as he has been proven to be honest and responsible, and to always do things "on the square". For him to pay his entire fortune to a blackmailer, he must have done something so horrendous, that he wants no human to know about it. Perhaps he was a Devil-worshipper, who delighted in murdering and then eating human victims (an eager cannibal)?
OR, perhaps it is best to not try to delve into some areas that are not crucial to telling Scrooge's history. For once, I agree with Don Rosa, that the events in the "Flour Salesman Story" related to Miss Penny wise and her letter that could ruin Scrooge, were only used because they were needed for that one story, and don't fit in well with his character or history (as defined and developed by Barks).

Talking about personal canon, based on the phrasing I actually always thought it was a literal note. And that based on some of his characterization regarding poetry in Last Sled to Dawson...
Said note contained a terrible love poem he wrote about Goldie.

Would it really be that scandalous? Think of the ongoing relationship between Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, or Elmer Elephant and Tillie Tiger, or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cat girlfriend. The 1920s-40s were a profoundly racist era, yet these inter-species romances were depicted quite casually. IMHO, in Duckburg/Mouseton reality, species seems to be a variable on the same level as hair color or height among humans.

The story behind Pennywise is something i've also wondered.I'll most likely write a fanfic revealing what happened, but, first,i have to finish the one i
just started.
PART 2
Once Scrooge lays an eye on the paper's financial news, his eyes wide open.
Scrooge:CAN'T BE.
Hortense and Quackmore stop kissing and look at him.
Matilda:You're acting as if someone died.
Scrooge:Exactly.Flintheart Glomgold is dead!
Hortense:Who the hell is that?
Scrooge:Another long story.Well,i guess it no longer matters...
Scrooge reads the rest of the article. It seems that, having failed twice to rob Scrooge, and after an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve his armor from
outer space,Black Knight chose Glomgold as his target for the great finish of his career. That time,he didn't repeat the mistake to warn before
attacking. He secretly went to Africa, sneaked into the second richest man's bin and stole his greatest trophies, leaving a message with his signature of
course. When Glomgold found out,the shock was too big for his over 80 year old heart to handle,so he just dropped dead!
Later,Scrooge is about to ride his personal jet.
Pilot:Where to?
Scrooge(thinking):Maybe i should go to his funeral first...
Pilot:So,where to?
Scrooge(thinking):What am i thinking?I would never delay my business to go to the funeral of such a detested creature...Or,would i?
Scrooge looks troubled.
Gyro cannot believe in his eyes.
Gyro:Gladstone...is that really you?
Gladstone:Wait, the biggest surprise is yet to come.
Gyro:Then,maybe i should sit.
And so he does.
Gladstone:I want you to make some sort of machine that will rid me of my luck!
Gyro stands up.
Gyro:ARE YOU NUTS?
Gladstone:You can't understand me.Nobody can.I can't stand it anymore. All my life,i've been alone.Everybody dislikes me because of all the material
things i get.I've never had any true friends. Please, rid me of this curse.
Gladstone sobs.Gyro feels sorry for him.Perhaps the first time someone feels for Gladstone something other than anger.
Gyro:Look,i don't know if i can make what you're asking for. But,i don't think it's neccessary. Why don't you use your luck to do good? You can help
other people, share your wealth with those in need...Then,you'll become likeable.
Gladstone:GREAT IDEA.How didn't i think of it?
He jumps on Gyro and kisses him.
Gladstone:I want to thank you, please take this.
He takes out a piece of paper and gives it to Gyro.
Gladstone:Don't worry,i have plenty more of these.
He leaves.Gyro looks at the piece of paper and gets surprised to find out it is a lottery ticket winning one million dollars!

The same evening Gladstone holds a party in his house,to celebrate his change of heart. The whole family is invited.Donald and the kids,Daisy,Matilda,

Quote from user: Robb_KFor him to pay his entire fortune to a blackmailer, he must have done something so horrendous, that he wants no human to know about it. Perhaps he was a Devil-worshipper, who delighted in murdering and then eating human victims (an eager cannibal)?
It wouldn't have to be something quite so deviant. Surely, in his long career as a businessman, Scrooge could have been involved in a financial deal that he's not proud of? Maybe he was dragged into it, was misled, or showed poor judgement; regardless, we do know that Scrooge does often care about his public image. It could also be something personal but not criminal. Maybe Miss Wise somehow stumbled upon Rumpus' mother's letter to her sister Vera (how's that for tying together the Barks/Rosa/Van Horn universes)? As for "paying his entire fortune " to a blackmailer, we have also seen how Scrooge is prone to indulge in histrionics and hyperbole when he perceives that any of his money is at risk (calling himself a "poor old man" when he loses the contents of his money bin, when that clearly can only be a fraction of his assets). Plus, Miss Wise does not seem like the kind who is interested in using any power she has over Scrooge for her personal gain, based on her sole portrayal in that Barks ten pager. She seems to be on good terms with him, and behaves like an old friend. So Scrooge was probably making a mountain of a molehill, as he often does.
Quote from user: Robb_KOR, perhaps it is best to not try to delve into some areas that are not crucial to telling Scrooge's history. For once, I agree with Don Rosa, that the events in the "Flour Salesman Story" related to Miss Penny wise and her letter that could ruin Scrooge, were only used because they were needed for that one story, and don't fit in well with his character or history (as defined and developed by Barks).
Well, yes, you're certainly entitled to that opinion. But if Rosa gets to pick and choose what parts of the Barks universe to ignore and what parts to consider canon, so does everyone else. I'm merely saying that the whole situation with Miss Penny Wise is not necessarily incompatible with Rosa's own version of the universe (based on Barks' groundwork), and I disagree with him that the whole concept is "stupid". As I pointed out, it seems more to me as if he somehow overlooked that particular story when he was writing L&T, and then decided retrospectively that it was unworthy of consideration the whole time. I'm still not convinced that he wouldn't have found a way to include her if he had known about her beforehand.
I do think it's odd that Barks would tease us with this "secret" that Scrooge has and then not expand on it. Not something he generally did.
Quote from user: ramapithWould it really be that scandalous? Think of the ongoing relationship between Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, or Elmer Elephant and Tillie Tiger, or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cat girlfriend. The 1920s-40s were a profoundly racist era, yet these inter-species romances were depicted quite casually. IMHO, in Duckburg/Mouseton reality, species seems to be a variable on the same level as hair color or height among humans.
I agree, as we've discussed on other threads, "species" in the Duckburg/Mouseton world seems to be akin to race in ours. And crossbreeding also seems possible (the fact that we've seen background characters like ducks with ears and chickens with human feet confirms this). So the idea of a McDuck-Wise relationship is not ridiculous on the face of it. But Rosa has stated (on the DCML, as quoted on the thread I linked to above) that he cannot countenance a scenario in which Scrooge or Goldie ever loved someone other than each other, so in his universe, it is impossible.
