A couple of days ago I received the new book I mentioned here a month
ago. It indexes all the Dell Disney books from A to O, including, but
not limited to, Chip'n'Dale #4-30, Christmas Parade #1-9, Donald Duck
#26-84, Donald Duck Album #1-8, and Mickey Mouse #28-84. Also all the
"Four-Colors" are here, collected under F. The second volume will
have the rest of them, including Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disney's
Comics & Stories. All the give-aways are here in volume 1 though.

For every story in every book there is info on title, American
reprints up to sometime in 1992, and credits (most often only artist,
sometimes only penciller, but in a few cases the writer is credited as
well). There is also information on Italian reprints, perhaps not so
interesting for us non-Italians...

I think the typography could be a lot better, and there are lots of
small insignificant mistakes (like the frequent misspelling "Brabdury"
for "Bradbury"), but all in all this is a very nice book, and I
heartily recommend it. There are also lots of illustrations showing
examples of the different artists' work, and at the end there are
short descriptions of all the different artists.

This listing is a fairly exhaustive compilation of current and recent, new and
some old Disney Characters based on the "mainstream" characters (i.e. Mickey,
Donald, Pluto, etc.), Syndicated cartoons (i.e. Ducktales, Tailspin, etc.), to
include subordinate characters with re-occuring roles. This list is probably
not as complete as I'd like it to be and I welcome any possible suggestions,
alterations, etc. you may have (no flames please). Some are Comic book/strip
related. Also, some characters like Donald Duck, Goofy, Bad Pete & Launchpad
fit several groupings so I limited their entry to the main grouping I believe
best suits them (except where the category disclaimer applies). Characters

TROOP seems to be Goofy is a single father raising his son Max. GOOF TROOP
picks up on the long-standing fued between Goofy & Bad Pete. Pete is married
and he & his wife, Peg have two children P.J. and Pistol. Max & P.J. are
best friends, and Max is a little uneasy about being known as Goofy Junior.
Traditionally Goofy has always lived in the same hometown as Mickey, but
according to the new series Goofy has moved to Spoonerville.

corrections or even additions I would be happy to discuss them.

Please keep in mind the three qualifiers I have for this list is:

1) the character has appeared in a comic or cartoon more than twice, and/or
2) the character is above average in importance to other characters on the
list (which may remove the necessity of qualifier #1).
3) Characters should not be included just because they are someone's favorite
if they have had only one appearance and then are forgotten.

O.K. the following is a rough draft of what I have in mind concerning how to
format the Character Profiles I spoke of a while ago. I have lots of
information on all of the characters I had in store, but I am really waiting
for the latest issue of THE ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF DISNEY'S ANIMATED
CHARACTERS to come out later this month before I settle on any definite
information. I realize that some characters, like Goofy, will be very
complicated while others, like Clara Cluck, will be pretty straight forward.

This is the basic outline of the profile. If you feel any more information
would be of relative importance please advise.

Sampler:

That's about it. Of course the last two sections will problably be the
longest and will cover a broard range of information. Some editorial
discretion will definitely be necessary to keep it as simple as possible.
This may be suspended a little for Goofy's sake.

These are the hallmark characters of the Mickey & Donald Universe and I
believe they deserve some respect, even if their entries are relatively brief.

I don't know of any others that should be tackled right away. Perhaps after
these are established and firmed we can work on some of the other supporting
characters and universes. Some may wonder why I've included Peter & Patricia
Pigg or Fifi & Figaro. Concerning the first set, these two were originally a
part of Mickey's career but soon fell by the wayside. They still make
appearances, but are relatively obscure in nature. I felt they are part of
Mickey's legacy and deserve some notice. As to the last two, these are two
very significant pets which belong to Minnie. Both have established ties to
the M&D Universe and are somewhat important (especially Fifi who is the mother
of Pluto's puppies and a significant character in Minnie'n Me).

As for relatively insignificant recurring characters, anyone who wishes to
submit a short 'blurb' about the character (like the one Starback did) please
do so. Perhaps someone could compile these, too and then they could be peiced
together in alphabetical order. My software doesn't allow for this. If I did
so, I'd have to eventually manually retype all of this information. Any
volunteers?

Hello quiet ones!

Some time ago Rich talked about making and collecting short profiles
on the Disney characters, like biographical data, and who made stories
with them, etc. When I read the latest version of his DISNEY Toon
Character List I could only think of one recurring character that
wasn't there, so I tried to write a little entry for him.

* Herbert

Herbert is a friend of Huey, Dewey and Louie. He is an
anthropomorphized pig who wears trousers and a sweater with stripes.
His mother (also a pig of course) was seen briefly in WDC 43, and his
father trains substitutes for setting hens for a living (WDC 70).
Herbert isn't very bright --- when the nephews gave him a dime he
swallowed it, and an X ray of his stomach showed a marble, some
buttons, the dime, and "a very bad school report card" (WDC 50). His
only lines in WDC 43 were "Hunk-uh!" and "Yea!"

He was invented by Carl Barks, who used him in the following stories:

WDC 43 "Three Dirty Little Ducks"
WDC 50 (The Five-Hundred Dollar Dime)
WDC 70 (Smugsnorkle Squattie) (Herbert is not seen, only mentioned.)

[There are more, aren't there? What have I forgot?]

Only Barks used him back then, but I think some of the newer artists
who know their Barks have used Herbert once or twice.

For those of you collecting the Carl Barks albums and cards:

Starting with volume 9, the cards included will no longer be random. Each
album will include a specific card. I don't know how you can get the 52nd
card though, if there is only going to be 51 albums. Perhaps they will inlcude
it with one of the many other supplemental albums they have been producing.

I'm still unfortunate enough not to have the first 8 cards. If anyone is
interested in trading, or knows of a place where I can get just the cards,
please let me know. Thanks.

Perhaps the "important" characters are most worthy of being covered,
but information on lesser characters might be fun too, as one might
wonder who all these characters are. Especially those only appearing
in comics, as you won't find them in Grant's Encyclopedia.

Don't worry about the compilation of those blurbs. I still archive
everything sent to disney-comics, and if we *do* get some of those, I
wouldn't mind digging through the archives to collect them.

On Herbert:

The same two? In the first one I listed (WDC 43) HDL and Herbert vow
to never take another bath. Unfortunately Herbert is taken away by
his mother to get a bath, so only the three of HDL remain. The rest
of the story is about Donald trying to give a bath to HDL. The second
one I listed (WDC 50) is a story where Donald collects coins.
Accidentally he gives an old valuable dime to the nephews when they
ask for money for ice cream for them and Herbert. The rest of the
story is about Donald trying to trace that dime and get it back.

I don't think so. Not in those stories I listed anyway.

Does anyone have Uncle Scrooge Digest #1 from Gladstone? It's the
only Gladstone digest I don't have, and I want the contents info from
it to complete an index on the digests.
