It is good news for people that have not read the majority of
his material, have problems finding some material, etc...

I have read way too much of his material multiple times to be
spending more money on the same stories to get excited.

15 years to complete the set? That seems, well, odd. Plus
to come out with volume seven first will indeed get people
hooked but may discourage new readers buying future volumes
who expect that A grade type material every time they buy going
forward.

Maybe I am a pessimist about these things because it is just
more stuff for 30 and up year olds to get excited about... while
the real children in the US just do not have easy access to this
stuff. It will be tough to convince mom or dad to buy a 25 dollar
volume. Even tougher for kids to know it exists in the first place.

Bring back cheap comics under a buck at eye level for kids and
that will be exciting to me. (Remember penny pincher comics?)
Or get involved with schools that do those book selling things
and get offerings in there. I liked seeing Duck/Mickey comics
on sale at toys r us. Now that is the place to get them involved
again.

I try to practice what I preach by giving away comics to small
children by the short/long box. Naturally my dog eared disney
comics are well represented along with DC/Marvel. I am at the
point I only have a few long boxes left and really expensive
material.

I grew up with the Disney channel and every time I have the chance
at home I get the kids who are here watching old disney cartoons.
They love them!

Eh, enough rambling... I just either need the next Rosa to come
along or my place in comics will just be delegated to sharing with
others what I have and basically stop buying unless for kids. 25
bucks a pop is just too much for me to give away.

That is what I thought! And your comments on distribution show that this problem persists. I recall years ago, when we here on the Disney Comics list were suggesting ideas to promote sales for Gladstone/Gemstone, I mentioned that the Disney Stores in the shopping malls should be an obvious place for a display.

We were told, however, that Disney wanted absolutely no comic-book racks in its stores! Maybe they were afraid it would attract "the wrong people"...who knows? Barnes and Noble and other such stores have all kinds of "dark" superhero nonsense, and even Archie comics (???), but nothing from Barks or Rosa.

It almost seems...conspiratorial! Sales stay low among cognoscenti, and cannot be increased among children because distribution is restricted, so prices stay high, preventing parents who can find the books from buying the comics for their kids.

But we will not complain too much! Perhaps this project will reveal Duckburg to the present generation going through the schools.

I found a caveat to Disney's aversion to selling its own comics at its retail
locations (Disney stores, Disney Parks).? On a trip to Walt Disney World last
month, I found the TPBs for WDCS-The World to Come, Wizards of Mickey V1, Uncle
Scrooge - The Hunt for Old Number One, Donald Duck - Double Duck V2 and at least
one more which currently escapes my memory!? Unfortunately this was on our last
day of vacation and all of these I discovered were in one location at Disney
Hollywood Studios, the retail location opposite the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
play area.? I had not seen them anywhere else, but then, assuming that they
wouldn't be there, I wasn't looking!? I'd love to speak/correspond with the
Studios merchandising manager and see how that decision was made and if it was
successful.

I was at DisneyWorld in December and saw those same books at the main
gift store in Downtown Disney. I also saw several Marvel trade
paperbacks and hardcovers.

If the Fantagraphics edition will miss as many strips as the website has omitted then the early Mickey adventures will be heavily butchered and almost unreadable in parts.
As an example in Mickey Mouse Sails for Treasure Island the cannibals and Mickey attacks the crooks. Several strips omitted here. In the next strip the cannibals flee from the battle.
More strips omitted here. In the next strip Mickey is tied to a tree in front of a cannon.

The publication on D23 is sadly awfully incomplete when it concerns Mickey.

Hey All,
As frustrating as it is that strips are reprinted censored or missing - I am
at least glad that they're being reprinted, period.

I seem to recall that for a long time (at least here in the US) 1960s to
early 80s (before Gladstone) only a few instances (if at all) where Mickey
strips were reprinted. The Smithsonian book, Abbeville Press books & some
scattered gag-a-day reprints.

When D23 reprinted the Death Valley continuities I saved every single strip
because I had only read it from April 1st to June 21st and wanted to read
the rest unaltered. They skipped from the June 21st strip to Sept 19th. I
used to their feedback form on D23 site and received this reply back. The
original email and reply and is in bold.

I was hoping that I could get a more specific response than these canned
responses. Who knows? Maybe the archives are very strict about what they
can and can't tell people who ask up front why they won't reprint certain

I am glad that they're reprinting the strips though. I'm crossing my
fingers that the collection comes out in May & is not held up in the middle
of production. I'm wondering if this going to be a limited release like the
Treasures sets or a la Disney Vault. Anyone from Fantagraphics on this
list whose *allowed* to comment since the book's not out yet?
