Dear all,
it's been a while since I last emailed to this list about my research on
Don Rosa. I thought I'd inform you all that so far I've had two articles
published on Don Rosa and his comics - they're both in English and can be
accessed via Internet as they are in ebook form.
The first one is about the Triumvirate of evil and you may find it in here:

It's easily accessed and read though as you all are very familiar of
Disney's villains, you may find it kind of obvious. But the people in
conference in Oxford in 2010 where I held the presentation the article is
based on loved it so much they voted it to be published also in a hardcopy
volume as a more developed paper. Still waiting to here when that copy is
published.
The second article is more recent and it's about the haunting ancestors of
Scrooge. You may read it from here:

It's a bit harder to access as you have to sign in and "order" the book
for yourself - even though it is free. But then you can download the whole

assistance. In case any of you have the email addresses of the two Finnish
people who have done their Master's thesis on Don Rosa as well, I'd be
really appreciated. These people are Marika Rantala and Marja Ritola
(she's the most famous of us, I think).
I'm trying to get in touch with all the five people who have done research
on Rosa in Finland as I have this wild dream of publishing an anthology of
Rosa. It would include articles from different perspectives on his Disney
comics and also about his persona (I heard Kai Saarto did some research on
him, and in case you have his contact information too, I'd love to have
it).
I have two people already interested in it and I'm waiting to hear from
the others as well.

Hi Katja
I read your article on the Triumvirate, very interesting.
But there is an error : the Vesuvius volcano is in Campania, near Naples,
not in Sicily. You are probably mistaken with the Etna volcano, that is in
Sicily near Catania.
Hope you can come sometime to Italy and see them in person!

I read your article on the Triumvirate, very interesting.

I enjoyed reading "The Triumvirate Of Evil...". There's not a lot of reading material devoted to the Disney comic books (usually it's devoted to superheroes or independant comics of a type). It was well put. It might be interesting to note that these villains only appeared working together in one other story, "The Fall Of New Atlantis!" in Ducktales #3 (published by Disney Comics in 1990), which was not by Don Rosa, but it was the first time it happened.

Since the movie will not be released in the USA until December, I will keep
this message spoiler-free, though it might be simpler for anyone who wants
to preserve the surprises not to read any message related to this.
In any case, there is not much description needed.
Has anyone who has seen the movie (I?m just back from it?and lunch) thought
like me that one of the final scenes was reminiscent of a very famous scene
in one of Barks? classic stories?
Could it really be a coincidence, or was Spielberg inspired by Barks again?
Granted, Barks himself once said (or wrote? I don?t remember) that the gag
was a rather ?obvious? one that other cartoonists had thought of as well,
but if Spielberg got the idea from somewhere, I would bet on Barks rather
than any other source.
I loved the movie (and am now listening to John Williams? score again?I
received it yesterday).
Elements from the two stories that inspired it was nicely meshed together,
and the characters were wonderfully adapted into 3D.
The homage to Herg? (in the very first scene) was nice.
It is of course a pity that the shark submarine and Tryphon Tournesol
(Professor Calculus) were not introduced, but it?s a decision that makes a
lot of sense, as this whole plot requires a lot of time to tell, only to
end in failure.
Changing the villains from the antiquarian brothers to a modified version of
a character featured in the album was clever and worked well?and it seems
surprisingly obvious when you compare this character with Red Rackham.
I can?t wait to see Jackson?s The Seven Crystal Balls / Prisoners of the
Sun.
