Hello everyone who is still here!

After a long time with very low traffic it is time to finally
terminate this mailing list.

The date set is August 3 this summer.

As most of you probably remember I am the one who created and managed
this mailing list from the start. I wrote a couple of test messages
before adding the addresses of interested people I had corresponded
with and who had said they wanted to be part of such a mailing list.
Then 3 August 1992 I sent the first real message, which is archived
here:

https://nafsk.se/pipermail/dcml/1992-August/000002.html

Few of you were part of this from the very beginning, but more and
more Disney comics fans got access to email and got to know about the
list, and joined.

A prolific time for the mailing list started which gave me a lot of
pleasure (and a lot of information). I find it almost hard now to
remember how it was then after various problems later with the list,
and then the list being dormant for so long. But it was really
something totally different then; fun and important for me and others,
connections and friendships were made, and I want to thank all of you
old-timers who made it what it was back then! (It would be too hard to
decide where to draw the line on who to mention, so I'll mention no
names at all.)

Back in 2006 when things were not so great anymore, and my interest in
Disney comics was at a temporary low, I handed over the list to
NAFS(k), the "National Donaldist Society of Sweden (quack)" as a way
to continue the list.

Here is my announcement in 2006 about the transfer, from the list archives:

https://nafsk.se/pipermail/dcml/2006-March/023998.html

I was active in NAFS(k) myself and continued to be part of the 'DCML
team', but not alone anymore. I thought I was going to quit that
totally after some time of overlapping with new people, but actually I
never did, so I have continued to filter spam sent to the list etc.
during the long time of low list activity. Just a couple of years ago
I finally transferred the old web pages associated with the list which
were (somewhat 'forgotten') still at my old university department from
which I earlier had handled the list (the impetus was that I was
quitting that job).

Anyway, recently I suggested to the board of NAFS(k) that we should
finally discontinue the list, and they agreed. It doesn't take a lot
of resources to continue to manage it, but it seems rather pointless,
and if someone new finds it and joins now they will probably just be
dissatisfied when they find out there is no activity here.

The date for termination is set to the 'birthday' of the list, August
3, so that the list becomes 32 years old ? quite a respectable age for
a mailing list!

The list *archive* is a treasure which surely will be kept. There is a
lot to be found there, and it should continue to be a valuable
resource at least for anyone interested in Disney comics fandom during
that time. There have been loose plans to convert the archive to a
nicer format. That will not happen soon at least, but chances for that
will at least somewhat improve after the shutdown of the list, since
it makes it easier to handle it when not new incoming messages have to
be taken into account.

I will end this announcement with the same .sig quote I used back then.

Hi

Wow. It must be a couple of decades since I last posted here. Even so, this feels somewhat sad as I really enjoyed this list back in the days. But the world has moved on, and the decision is a natural one.

Thank you ever so much for managing this list for all these years. It really made a difference when it comes to information and discussions about Disney comics.

Halsten

O B
Thank you Per for creating the list and maintaining it, and to NAFS(k) for
continuing to do so.

The monthly reminder of the account login has been bittersweet for several
years now: it was the only activity on the list, but it showed it was still
there, and with it the possibility of new discussions.

I'm very sad various circumstances made us all drift apart from the list,
and hope the reasons were mostly happy ones, or that things have improved
for you.

I know discussion boards have been created, and wish I had been able to
keep contributing to one of them. To me, the DCML seemed to be the core of
it all, though, and remains my starting point (in 1996, I believe).

It was a great place for information, with a bit of fun (quotation games)
and humor, thanks to the very fine people on the list.

A sad irony is we have been blessed with lots of anthologies (some for the
first time) and collections (complete sets of Barks, Rosa, and Gottfredson
stories; plus books with comics by Murry, Scarpa, Bottaro, ...) over the
past dozen years or so, yet the discussions dwindled as this treasure trove
expanded.

A funny glitch occurred "a long time ago" (2000s): someone's message was
stamped years ahead-- 2016? I don't remember; we've passed that point in
time, in any case.

Thank you all for the great moments on this list!

Best wishes,

Olivier

Every once in a while, an email came to me from this list and I enjoyed reading it.

I am not a huge follower of all things Disney but I definitely enjoy Barks/Rosa/etc.. work with Uncle Scrooge.
To this day I still have not acquired a Carl Barks oil painting for obvious reasons ($$$$).

I have given almost all my Disney comics away to children over the years and all I am left with is a handful of random issues that I have read so many times before. My 12 year old son prefers Pokemon over comic books even though I still try every once in a while with him. Sad that direct sales to comic book stores have basically made finding Disney comics impossible in most US stores, gas stations, etc... One has to make specific trips or online purchases just for a chance to acquire the material.

It will most likely take a special talent to give new life to these characters here in the USA if Disney even allows it to happen. Respecting the past while introducing fresh stories to appear. Anime/manga seems to have that special thing going on right now for current generations. Something Disney has lost or gave up on. Who knows if political correctness could even allow a 1940s style cartoon short to even be shown in a movie theater now days with comedy only allowed if done a certain way.

Thank you for maintaining this list for all these years. Times change I suppose.

Matt

This is a pity although it is difficult to argue against this decision. Fond memories of the friendships made on this list during the 1990s when it was the centre of gravity of Disney comicsology (at least for me).

Many thanks to you and to all who contributed. And yes, please do preserve the archive and leave it accessible, if at all possible!

I'm saddened to hear (read) this. While I've never been much active in
this list (I wish I had found more topics to write about :-)), it was
happy that once in a while something related to Disney Comics would
reach my mailbox via the DCML.

Personally, this is perhaps the best medium I can think of for this kind
of discussion group. Without the list, the closest one I can think of
would be network news with USENET. (If anyone here knows of an existing
USENET group for disney comics, please let me know about it!)

(And I'm not saying it'd be a replacement, I'm sure there will be people
who are following the list by mail but who aren't able or don't want to
follow a group on USENET. (And that's okay!))

(A small note might sadly be necessary here: USENET is a text discussion
medium, sadly it has also been (ab)used for file sharing. This means
it's possible some of you might have only heard of the second use of
USENET. But there's a whole world outside of "binary" groups, and
nowadays, access usually has to be done via free servers that only carry
the text groups anyway.)

Outside of text-based mediums that don't rely on the web (which are the
ones I prefer), I've been playing a bit with the fediverse via Mastodon
(mostly an experiment, it has, in my opinion, some shortcomings and I'm
still not sure I'll be using it long-term): there I follow the
#DisneyComics hashtag.

Definitely :-)

Huge thanks to you and to everyone else involved in running DCML through
the years, and to all who posted to and/or read the list. It has been
great to have the list around for so long!

I'd have to check on which year did I join, it's likely that I've only
joined the list after its most active period.

I wonder how did I learn about it. It's possible it was from a
Portuguese Disney Comics publication, as I have the faint recollection
of some issue mentioning DCML and/or INDUCKS (was it Disney Mania?).

Wasn't there also an INDUCKS IRC server many years ago? When was that?

I hadn't realized it has been this long. I believe I've been on this list since the nineties, probably for most of those 32 years (if a bit silent).

It was fun, it was informative, it was great!

Thank you for this list, Per, and thank you people who were here and made the list.

I'm remembering several names, but won't mention them, so I won't let others out.

All the best to all.

Hi all, hi Per,

DCML was a great adventure. Thank you for this wonderful idea.
I don't remeber exactly when I joined this list but it was around 20
years ago.
I discovered that many other mad people in the world had the same fandom
as mine for Disney Comics.
I learned a lot reading this list.

I remember the time when I was impatient to be back home to read the
daily digest.

I took great pleasure reading DCML.
The only thing I can sincerely say now is "tack!"

It's in the spirit of our list, and of the Inducks, to keep the archive available. Some of us have archives of DCML digests that aren't accessible from the main archive now (I personally have 1992-1998); I wonder if we can add them to whatever eventually evolves?

Dear all,
A big thank you from me also to everyone associated with creating this list and for contributing. For myself, the best/worst memory was when Carl Barks passed away. I had narrowly missed meeting him twice by 48 hours by randomly being in the right place at slightly the wrong time, so it was some comfort to know that through this list that all our best wishes and messages were being received by Carl. That is no small thing and an amazing example of the connectedness this list created.
Sometimes being a fan (or working in this industry) can be an isolating experience. This list was a big help to know that there were other people out there that felt the same way about Disney comics!
Cheers all,
Shaun

Sigh. This brings me sadness, although I certainly understand the desire to close the list. I still have three boxes of Donald Duck comics (Barks) that date mostly to the 1940's and 50's, along with the letter Barks wrote to my dad back in the 60's. I'd always thought that this group would help to guide me in my disposal of them. I am, after all, 67 and won't be here forever. Oh, and there is also a small drawing that Barks personalized to my dad, "Quack, quack, Professor Burnett. Remember when Donald looked like this?" These have been family heirlooms, read and reread, and read again during my youth.

Thanks to all for the companionship over the years!

I'm sorry to hear this, but I understand the decision, and I'm glad to hear
that the archive will be saved. 32 is a very respectable age indeed - this
list was an important part of Disney comics fandom for an impressively long
time! All the best to everyone!

Spyros Stravoravdis
Hello,

As someone who never happened to participate in the list (I subscribed
in 2011,
long past its heyday, when forums like DCF were far more popular), I'm
still sad to
hear about the closure, though it makes sense. I always enjoyed reading and
researching through the archives and am glad that they will remain
accessible
and may even be augmented with the missing years of the 90s.

DCML seemed to embody the spirit of the open Internet, fostering and
organizing
a very strong community worldwide for a somewhat niche hobby, who managed
to create impressive endeavors like Inducks, building friendships,
getting in touch
and conversing with existing creators that seemed faraway and, I dare to
say,
perhaps even inspiring newer creators for a time.

I know for a fact that without DCML / Inducks my interest in Disney
comics would
have dwindled a long time ago. Instead, they became a fixture of my life
that
I always seem to come back to, even with periodic breaks. And it's
always fun to
unexpectedly discover that other people in real life share the same
passion for them!

So, thank you, Per, for creating the list in the first place!

Slightly offtopic, but for completeness, I'll add that Fran?ois has uploaded
an archive of the Disney Comics Forum (2007?2015) here:
https://inducks.org/fr/richard/dcf/

There was also an IRC Inducks server, that was still slightly active in
2014-2015,
when I happened to connect there. I suppose it was decommissioned around
2017,
when the COA subdomain was retired.

The current English-language places where Disney comics aficionados seem to
hang around are the Feathery Society forum and the Inducks Discord server.

(P.S.: Ten years ago, I created the /r/DisneyComics subreddit, but after
a while,
I stopped logging to that site. If anyone is interested in moderating
it, contact me,
although I'm not sure if there's a point; apparently Reddit's mostly
American demographics are not interested in our hobby).

Kind regards,
Spyros

Thanks for the thanks from several persons!

David wrote about missing messages in the list archive. Yes, the list
had several instances with some breaks when the hosting system and
software was changed, and one of those instances is not in the list
archive.
Surely the list archives ought to be augmented with that. If that
hasn't happened say within a year of the discontinuation of the list
it might be good to remind webmaster at nafsk.se or me about that.
