I have recently read that Don Rosa's original cover for "Last Sled to Dawson" is inspired by Barks' oil-painting "Always Another Rainbow":

In his comment Don says that he wanted his version set in Klondike where $crooge had his break through (and which fits the actual story) - and also that he wanted $crooge to more determined than in Barks' version. Also note that Rosa's $crooge (as in Lo$) has not yet started to wear glasses on a permanent basis at the actual point of time in his life.
What do you think about these depictions of $crooge in his youth?
Maybe you can do a third version/depiction, Rob?

That is in accord with Barks' depiction of Scrooge in his Klondike time, as given in the cutbacks in "Only a Poor Old Man" and "Back to the Klondike". Barks' oil-painting of Scrooge as gold-digger shows him probably at a later point of his life (Scrooge wore glasses already for instance when looking for gold in Pizen Bluff); but maybe Barks added the (old-)Scrooge-typical glasses deliberately against historical authenticity for the purpose of better recognition of the man in that stylizing presentable painting.

I like both, Barks' painting anyway, but also Rosa's adaptation of it is fine.

It is, however, not absolutely self-evident to praise Barksian depictions of young Scrooge unconditionally. Scrooge's depiction of Scrooge as a little boy in "The Invisible Intruder" (a story he "thank goodness" didn't write himself at least) is, well, something one needs to get used to. It maybe tells its own tale that seemingly no one ever asked for an oil-painting of little Scrooge. ^^

I think that Don Rosa did a good job on the cover for Uncle Scrooge Adventures #5. I had no idea that it was inspired by an oil painting that Carl Barks did.

I much prefer Rosa's version. I was never too crazy about Barks' oils. Dare I say it... I think they're overrated.

I thought so too, until I saw them in person. I still don't love them as much as some folks do, but you gain a new respect for them when you see the brush strokes and such.
