Must admit, I find this "kid-friendly" notion HIGHLY dubious. SOME company is just looking for a quick cash-in.

Quote from user: GeoXSOME company is just looking for a quick cash-in.
That's okay for me. If they can make additional money from the already edited material, they should do it.
It keeps the company alive and well funded for the adult-friendly books.

Aren't the color books being released now "kid-friendly" enough? This is just repackaging of the same stuff we've already bought a million times. I don't necessarily blame them for doing it, but I'm not buying them.

Well, when I was a little kid, I never bought any hardback books or comics because paying over 10 dollars for a book seemed absurd to my young mind. These are more affordably priced for kids.

Well, yeah, but it seems somewhat unethical to say "oh, kids are kids; we can given them less value for money, no problem." It's the same crud Boom was doing when they charged half the price of a Gemstone prestige title for less than half the material.

A valid point, the Boom stuff were definitely ripoffs. 96 pages for 10 dollars is still a better deal than Boom though, even if it could be improved.

48 pages, really, because it's actually taking the story and putting each half-page as a page in and of itself (it's the sideways formatting).
Maybe this experiment will go over well with very little kids who are maybe just learning to read, which is who I suspect it's really marketed towards.

Eww.
I didn't realize that.

Geox, I take back my words of support.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I think this is a terrific idea!
This isn't for us: this is for kids! They're reformatting Barks works into the kind of book that kids actually read today. Kids will read these and (hopefully) grow up into Barks fans! The Library hardcovers are for us. These aren't.
It's similar to what Drawn and Quarterly is doing with their Moomin comic strip reprints: a complete, chronological set of the black and white strip in hardcover - and - a series of small paperbacks formatted as children's books that collect individual storylines with the artwork colorized.

Fantagrahics sinks (many would say too much) time and money into releases that have so little commercial appeal they're practically vanity projects for comics historians and art comics fanatics. I wouldn't mind if they did indulge in a bit more transparently commercial projects to help keep their finances in order!

It'll serve as another great way to introduce my son to the comics. I'm all for it.
