For what it's worth, I read a Gemstone issue of WDCS from a couple of years ago yesterday, and today I read WDCS 699. While I didn't love either of them, I think that the Boom issue was better and has more of a chance to appeal to kids, which is exactly what the title should do.
Us long time collectors have had over 20 years of books largely being published to suit our needs. I, frankly, think it's high time that the monthly books return to being targeted toward future audiences. I think these books can do it. At my local shop, they'd sell two issues a month of each Gemstone issue. They've already sold 6-8 issues each of the Boom books. One cover variant of Mickey Mouse is already sold out. If this is sustained, that proves to me that this is a more successful format.

Are the Boom! comic books in shops already? I thought that the first date on th comics was February, which would put them on the shelves in December.

Uncle Scrooge 384 comes out on October 14th and I think that's the day it'll be in stores.
There is no month on the cover like on Gemstone's comics. Uncle Scrooge has "October 2009" in the small print on the credits page.

On Sunday I got the Baltimore Comic Con exclusive, limited to 500 copies with a Don Rosa cover. The cover is beautiful, the contents of the issue, not-so-much. Call me crazy but I prefer the superhero story in WDC&S to this more traditional comic.

I've been collecting UNCLE SCROOGE for quite awhile. I have a complete set to date starting with the Gladstone issue #210. I've been buying a reader copy and a copy to put in plastic.
Here's where I will draw the line.
I will NOT collect these Booms. It is my assessment that they do not take the institution of this long and esteemed lineage seriously enough. Maybe I will buy some issues?I bought the 1st issue?because I get a 20% discount and they are cheap (for now) and my 11-year old will read them?but even he noticed that at least this issue's story and art and overall feel of the comic was much inferior to Gemstone issues. Not to mention the printing quality. This is their premiere issue?!?! They have taken the commitment to quality and love of the printed comic book that Gladstone nurtured for so long and Gemstone respected and they crapped on it. And they expect that the multiple cover variants will make this thing appeal to collectors? Are you kidding me?
Boom is clearly catering to a very young readership and in doing so they insult the intelligence and sensibilities of the adult collector. Good luck to them. They are clearly in it purely for the money.

I agree with you Morequack - I tried to mention this before the issue came out, comparing it possibly to the awful Whitmans of the early 1980's...but I got shot down due to - me being a 30something collector, and "this is some crusade for the kids" idea. Firstoff, print is about dead....most Marvels and DC's are selling for 3.99 and 4.99 an issue - it is getting too expensive to do comics like they did years ago. Plus, kids are computer savvy and read strips online and don't have the same hobbies others did before computers......Secondly, I have an 8 Year Old - who enjoys the ducks as much as I always have, but this stuff is nursery school. This new issue was dry and boring and over before it got started.....hardly an attention getter. I will continue to get each issue because I am a completist and would like to see #400 one day, but with any hope, Boom will saddle up and make something a little more intelligent than "See Spot Run" in a duck issue. This issue goes in the pile next the silver age Amazing Spiderman fighting the Kangaroo. ugh. And to date, I've seen 4 variant covers for this #384.

I am very surprised and disheartened that Boom Studios has went the "variant" route with Uncle Scrooge. There are two 50/50 covers, a 1/10 cover and a very limited 500 edition that was given away at the Baltimore Comic Convention. It doesn't sound much different than the whole superhero genre to me.

That's right. Print comics targeted toward kids is a dead concept. That's why Archie sells over 80,000 issues a month of just one title. (sarcasm if you couldn't see it dripping from the words)

Everyone is saying how bad Disney Comics are. I'm almost tempted to stop collecting them. I have been a long time collector since 1987 even though I didn't turn hard core until 1991. I too am in my 30's McDuck Enterprises so I sympathize with what you're going through. I'm sure that Boom Studios Disney Comics may seem bad compared to the Gladstone/Disney/Gemstone issues but maybe that will change in the future. I'm sure if they hold on to the license long enough they might write better stories. They are trying their best but they are new to it. Who knows what will happen? If enough people can buy their Disney Comics they won't suffer the same fate as Whitman but if fewer people take interest in them they will lose their license quicker than their predecessors and there might not be anymore Disney Comics. I don't know about you people but I hate to think of the idea of Disney Comics falling into oblivion just because a few people lost interest in them. I remember that there was a time when there were no Disney Comics being published in the USA. That was between the Second Gladstone Era and the Gemstone Era. I hope you people think carefully about what you're saying. I know I may sound like I'm overly sensitive but I like Disney Comics and I'm getting tired of hearing how much other people hate them. I know everyone has a right to their opinion but this is starting to go a little too far. I haven't bought any of the Boom Issues yet but I don't think that they can be as bad as people say. I think I might have said too much already. I hope I didn't offend anyone. If I did then I'm sorry.

Now one thing I will say in Boom's defense is that it seems like they've been very successful in getting these books into the hands of people who haven't read Disney comics in ages. You were hard pressed to find much of a formal announcement for the Gemstone material past Diamond's own newsletter (Scoop) which was very unfortunate. Boom has been promoting the heck out of these books, which would make Scrooge proud (so long as it's not costing them anything! ;) )
I'm sure they've been taking in what's being said about the stuff from the hardcore fans. And as it's been pointed out, this is their very first month doing this. So we'll see where we're at a year or so down the road. ;)
