Topic: Uncle Scrooge Gold Key/Whitman covers

I was curious if anyone could tell me how many Gold Key/Whitman variations (cover a/b) there are in the Uncle Scrooge US line......
I think I have found the earliest GK/W around #96 and I believe Whitman produced all books between #174 until Gladstone took over on #210. (no GK between 174-210?)
Did Whitman produce the same book as Gold Kwy #96 thru #174?
A list would help....It seems as though I found one awhile back but lost it....Thanks in advance for any help.

You could go to coa.inducks.org.

I tried that before asking here. The only thing I can find on INDUCKS is just a grouping/index of the actual books - but there is no differentiation between Gold Key and Whitmans....it just simply shows the Gold Key books up to 174. INDUCKS is really just an index for stories, right? Maybe I'm navigating wrong, but a lot of it's not in English so it seems hard to follow.....Thanks though.

Western produced all Dell/Gold Key/Whitman books. Only difference between GK and Whitman, as far as I know, is that books under Whitman label were sold in toy stores and GK's in newsstands. Only the label was different. Or were there differences inside books?
Western had distribution and publishing partnership with Dell up to 1962. After that they published books under Gold Key (and Whitman) imprint.
But what about K. K. Publications, who's name can be seen as publisher in 1950's and so (in indicia, on page 3) ? I thought K.K. (Kay Kamen) sold publishing rights to Western?

This should answer your questions. Thanks to Mark Evanier for making this so clear.

Thank you all for the interesting articles and info - I know that Western Publishing broke off from Dell in 1962 - hence, the Gold Key logo on the books then (starting with Uncle Scrooge #40)....what I am trying to figure out: Did Western then produce a Gold Key and Whitman logo version of all books from #40/1962 to #209/1984?....or were there just select #'s that have surfaced? I guess what got me started on all of this is the coming of variant covers for the new Uncle Scrooge #384.....I started thinking about the different logos of Gold Key and Whitman and wanted to find a pattern. Thanks!

I don't have one in front of me, but I *think* the Overstreet Price Guide outlines when the Whitman variants start. I'm fairly sure it wasn't until the early 70's.

cool, I'll try to check one out today...

Whitman owned Western Publishing. Dell distributed their publications. Walt Disney's Comics and Stories was published by K.K. Publications (also owned by Western Publishing). The Whitman imprint logo started in the 1970s. I seem to remember that there was a period with some overlap of the Gold Key and Whitman imprint during the late 1970s. Could the situation have been that the direct market printings still carried the Gold Key imprint, while, at the same time, the packaged comics sold in toystores had the Whitman imprint? Then, at the very end of the run (1979-82), only the Whitman imprint was left? I don't know, myself, as I stopped buying them after the last original Barks issue. I bought those with his new cover drawings, later.

So far, the earliest Whitman/Gold Key double version imprint I can find on Uncle Scrooge is #96 - 1971. It seems as though everything from #96 to #173 has both Whitman and Gold Key imprints....from #174 on, the Gold Key imprint is gone. (This would mean there are 77 issues that have the Gold Key/Whitman released imprints in the USA Uncle Scrooge line...) - but this is not confirmed. I picked up a second hand Overstreet from 2008 today and can't seem to find any distinctions between the two mentioned. I'll keep digging, but I think I've got it now.

I have a couple of older ones. They may have taken out the info to save on space in more recent editions. I am happy to look when I get home from the office.

Much appreciated Rodney!

Looks like I was wrong. They show when the imprint switched completely from Gold Key to Whitman, which would tell you when Western stopped distributing to newstands and stuck completely with toy stores, but that's about it.

Yeah, that would've been issue #174 which remained only under the Whitman imprint until Gladstone took over.

From just what I have been able to find online and in books - I have not located any Uncle Scrooge Whitman imprints before #96.

Uncle Scrooge USA Line Imprints:
Dell FC - #386,456,495 (#1,2,3)
Dell - #4-39
Gold Key - #40-95
Gold Key & Whitman - #96-173
Whitman - #174-209
Gladstone - #210-242
Disney - #243-280
Gladstone II - #281-318
Gemstone - #319-383
Boom - #384 - Present

So if one was to collect the "variations", one would need 77 additional issues to complete a Gold Key/Whitman parallel....hence, obsessive completist. I suppose the "hunt" is better than actually owning the stuff. Yeesh.

In this case, I agree completely. Although, I must admit that I actually prefer the Whitman editions. It's a nostalgia thing because of those 3-packs that I used to get when I was very, very young.
