Hi, folks:
I am new to posting to this forum, but I'd like to share my views on the current situation, before things spiral into a "doom and gloom" outlook...
1) As metioned elsewhere, the problem lies within different financial issues of Geppi's many endeavors, all unrelated to the Disney comics published by Gemstone. In the past 20+ years, these comics have been revived 4 different times: Gladstone (twice!), Disney Publishing, and Gemstone. This proves there is obviously an audience for these, and I have seen the books purchased by others than myself over the years.
2) If the financial issues and publishing conflicts can get straightened out, then the next step is to see if distribution can be "plussed" to vendors other than directly to comic shops. Luckily, there is an online presence such as Amazon.com that suggests the books, that alone is (naturally) a great leap in global exposure and availability since the 80s and 90s.
3) Should the conflicts prove unable to settle without cancellation or dismissal of the Gemstone line, Disney's latest endeavor "Kingdom Comics" might prove to be another outlet if they prove successful at their launch. There is talk of a continuation of "Pete's Dragon" for the first release in that line. Not to mention the upcoming launch of the PIXAR Comics line also to launch later this year.
So I honestly believe the Walt Disney Company obviously recognizes the value of utilizing their properties in comic books in 2009 and beyond! If the classic characters remain at Gemstone, great! If not, and they find their way over to another publisher, I only hope they are wise enough to pick up the likes of David Gerstein and friends to mantain the integrity and high quality level! I believe this is NOT the end, by any means, and I am not employed by any of the above companies! With luck, maybe we'll be cracking open the next edition of the "Walt Disney Treasures" by Christmas time!
