In the Eric Shanower's Duck Tale thread, David Gerstein mentions that an upcoming story is by Lara Molinari and hopes to print some stories by Casty next year. I have no experience with either, so don't have an opinion on them yet. However, from INDUCKS it looks like most of their stories are 3 row stories. While I don't mind on rare occasions 3 row stories in WDC&S and US, I really feel like they should be mostly 4 row stories. I would like to hear other peoples opinions on this.
From what I was able to read in the Donald Duck Adventures and Mickey Mouse Adventures "pocket book" titles, I feel that the modern 3 row stories on the whole are not as good as most modern 4 row stories. Now of course considering we only got to see a tiny proportion of such stories out of the thousands and thousand there are, perhaps there are plenty of great modern 3 row stories out there. However, from the ones that Gemstone printed, I find them to be lacking.
At least before though there was a proper place for them, in the pocket books. I bought each and every pocket book and would continue to do so if they were still published. Even though I did not like them as much as most 4 row stories, I still enjoyed reading them And to me, even a lesser Duck or Mouse story is relatively good! :)

So for $7.99 I mostly get only one 3 row story. However with DDA and MMA pocket books for $7.95 I could get *three* 3 row stories. Yes, I realize that if Gemstone started publishing such pocket book titles again the price would probably have to rise to $9.95 or so. Even at that price though a 50 page 3 row story seems much more reasonable price-wise in a pocket book than in a 64 page title.
If you can answer, David, is there any chance that Gemstone would reconsider publishing these pocket book titles in the next year or so.
This is somewhat off on a tangent, but does anyone else other than me feel that if the 2 pocket book titles had focused on *classic* 3 row stories from such greats as Scarpa, Cavazzano, etc., that the pocket book titles would have sold better? I think Gemstone missed a big opportunity there as I think there is a *big* difference quality-wise in such older 3 row stories than the more modern ones. I think there is more plot and story in most modern 10 page 4 row stories than in modern 40 or 50 page 3 row stories. At least that is how it feels to me.
Another place such 3 row stories would work would be in the proposed black and white title similar to "Shonen Jump". Gemstone said they were going to publish such a title at the end of 2006 when they cancelled all of their monthly titles except for WDC&S and US. For whatever reason though, such a title never was published. I hope sometime down the road Gemstone reconsiders this idea, as I think a B/W title with hundreds and hundreds of pages each issue would be a great place to publish such 3 row stories.

Both are fine with me. There are a lot of Scarpa mouse stories that have never been printed in English or Dutch, that I want to read. I'd just as soon see them in their original size and format. I wouldn't mind also seeing Gottfredson Mickey mouse stories that have never been reprinted in The Netherlands or USA (although, I suspect they won't appear in Gemstone)-but, I hope in a Gemstone Gottfredson collection). But, there are lots of good 3-tier stories, original newspaper strips (Bre'r Rabbit, Joe Carioca, Panchito, some of the other Silly Symphonies, Italian stories by Carpi, DeVita and a few others, Brazilian stories, and others worth printing). I don't care about the difference, as long as I get to read stories in a language I can enjoy them in, in a nice quality book.

I don't take Gemstone is going to bring back the Take Along Books but it might be possible that they might do a third prestige format title.

I never paid attention to the rows, but I do miss those smaller editions of WDCS and wish they were back---though now that I need bifocals to read with, maybe that's not such a good idea. :)
But it would be really great, Robb, if we could get reprints of all those old strips, including the foreign editions and the newspaper comics. :)

There are very good 3 row stories (I read them mostly in German comic books), but I think the size of the Uncle Scrooge and Comics & Stories books is too big for a 3 row story. The frames, pictures and text get too big and the story eats up a lot of pages.
For example take a look the first story in Uncle Scrooge #378 (http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL++348-A). The story was published in Germany in a comic book half the size of Gemstone's Uncle Scrooge.
So please stick to 4 row stories for Uncle Scrooge and Comics & Stories. A third smaller title would be great.

I don't care if there are 3 row stories, 4 row stories, or 5 row stories.
What I care about is whether or not those stories are GOOD. Looks are cosmetic and silly to complain about and there's nothing that can be done about that at this point any way. I'm just glad that we're seeing the ones that are awesome rather than Gemstone opting to not printing any ever again.
The digest sized pocketbooks proved that just because a story is longer and done in 3 panels that it can still be an ugly mess. On that same note, there's just as many Egmont 4 row stories from various artists and writers that are even bigger messes and done in far less pages (not you Lars, your stories are the bees knees! **GIGGLE GIGGLE FUNFUN LOLLERCOPTER TIME**).
What I care about is quality - and lately, minus a few clunkers after the initial digest cancellations, the 3 panel story selections have not been so bad as to warrant any backlash commanding them to go away forever (exception being to that Gladstone/Magica story which was just dumb and the Powerplay on Killmotor Hill a while back which...didn't make much sense on many things...).
You don't see people making those same complaints of Scarpa and Cavazzano and thier work is exclusively 3 panel.

Agreed! QUALITY STORIES. And LONGER quality stories. I'm tired of the 7 , 10 and 12-pagers in UNCLE SCROOGE. Put those in WDC&S where they belong. If that means fewer stories per issue by all means less is more! I'll take one 40 or 50-pager or two 28 or 30-pagers over 4-5 short gags any day (gag me ....)
