Topic: What is a full run collection worth monetarily?

Other than the obvious personal, nostalgic and symbolistic worth to a collector, (we all know WHY you collect,:) - What is a full run of USA Disneys worth monetarily speaking? For example the main runs....: WDC&S, Donald Duck or Uncle Scrooge - say in very good to mint condtion on your average window of non-graded books. Are there a lot of full runs being kept up to the present? I guess, WDC&S would be the hardest to attain, putting the $ amount higher, but am just curious.....How many of you out there have a full USA run of any of these and what is the going rate? (I have never seen a full set of anything listed for sale in all my years.) Thanks.

Interesting speculation. The only true gauge of this would be the worldwide marketplace >>> Ebay. Doubtful that a collection this extensive would ever become available for sale. I have never seen anything remotely close to it. The most that I have ever seen offered on Ebay is a complete run of a particular line such as Gladstone's Uncle Scrooge #210-318 for example. I have never seen anything older than that offered as a complete run.

Basically my NEAR MINT to MINT collection consisits of:

UNCLE SCROOGE 210-PRESENT
UNCLE SCROOGE ADVENTURES 1-54
DONALD DUCK ADVENTURES (Gladstone) 1-48
DONALD DUCK ADVENTURES (Disney) 1-38
ADVENTUROUS SCROOGE MCDUCK 1-2

I guess I could rephrase my query as maybe just to what one of these sets were worth monetarily in it's completion. Mostly out of curiousity as I have not been able to find anyone with a full run of anything to refer to. I have a full set of Uncle Scrooge 1-373 and US Adventures 1-54, along with a ton of one-shot US singles and trades...I'd like to insure them. Other than going back to price them all for what I paid for individually, (because that info is not in the old memory bank!) I was kind of looking for someone else with a crutch to base my own assumptions on.....as well as being curious if anyone out there has full runs. It is interesting to see what makes up the drive and passion of a person to go after a full run. I always told my wife I was glad I was never interested in Spiderman or Batman...It is nearly impossible to complete those collections as you would need a second mortgage, and then some just for the first few years of books!

You would have to consult a lawyer who at the same time is a dedicated active collector of Uncle Scrooge comics. Honestly, I think it is impossible to put a price of any legitimacy on such a collection for insurance purposes. Unless of course you go strictly by the current Overstreet comic book price guide, which in my opinion is grossly inaccurate and does not take into account availability and desirability and the fact that such a set in its entirety in hand is undoubtedly worth much more than the sum of its parts.

Morequack you are so lucky to have all of those Disney Comics Issues. The only complete series that I have out of all the ones you mentioned is The Adventurous Uncle Scrooge McDuck.

I can't check the auction as I'm at work and we have a web-blocker on certain sites(go figure!), but no, I'm not selling anything....I'll have to check it when I get home. I am just in process of upgrading my issues...I do have the full run of Scrooge #1-374.....but about 40 of them need upgraded from fair to better tho! That's the name of the game.

Holee Smokes! Well, there we are....I think he's a bit high on his asking bid, but how many times do you see this up for sale in one lot! I have to watch as well, as see how it does, if any bids at all. His books are similar to mine in condition. Hmmmmm.

From my experience the best deals (when you are the buyer) is when you buy a whole lot of comics. If you intend to sell comics on the other hand, it may be better to sell them one at a time. Of course, selling comics in such a way also takes a lot of time (so economically the time you are wasting finding a buyer for every item may be equal to the money you are supposedly saving :) ).

Does 12K sound right though? I can see 5/6K maybe.....I guess if the books were all NM, 12K is a good starting point. I guess that's what you were getting at cacou, it's more of a deal for the buyer to get everything at once rather than to nickel and dime yourself to death buying separately. I recently bought a huge lot of over 250 Scrooge comics to upgrade some of mine and flipped the rest lazily only to make 150.00 profit...whereas, had I taken the time to sell them one by one or even in smaller lots, I probably could've made closer to 300.00. I was just happy to upgrade my comics and sell off the chaff for a profit...It was like getting my upgrades for free, regardless of the time and effort put into it. In that lot, I did get a nice #310 and a few early ones in better shape.

You'd have to take out a second mortgage to afford to plunk down 12 big ones on the spot like this seller is asking for this comic book collection. And I think I'd have to fly out to Kentucky to see the collection first-hand rather than buying it willy-nilly and having it shipped to me. I shudder to think what could happen during shipping! I've generally had great experiences on Ebay but I wouldn't take a chance with that kind of $$.
