I have been buying Uncle Scrooge from my local shop for years now but am finding myself with less time to get around the city save for work and family so I decided just to get a subscription from Gemstone so not to miss an issue. There are a few other US fans around here that I compete with to get one of the 3/4 issues that my shop stocks. I had subscriptions back about 15 years ago, but wanted to ask before I get the first issue...How does Gemstone ship their books to subscribers? Are they shipped in any packaging? Are they prone to damage? Any subscribers out their to let me know? Many Regards!

Gemstone ships in hard cardboard envelopes. I've never had the slightest damage to a book. But if some damage occurred, I'm sure they'd send you a perfect condition replacement. The subscription books arrive about a week AFTER they normally arrive in shops.

McDuck, I find myself going to the comic store less and less too. I feel bad, because I live near one of the best comic stores in the Midwest (Bookery Fantasy in Fairborn, Ohio). I used to go once every three weeks. Now I go once every two months when I've got an errand to run. The problem is that I'm not guaranteed to get my favorite books and the prices are rising.
I started to turn to the internet a few months ago, specifically Amazon.com. There are some great deals from the affiliated vendors that can be found and even the used comics I get are in pretty good condition. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed when I received a copy of Uncle Scrooge #342, which was supposedly "brand new factory sealed." The sender (Smokey Mountain Books) sent it in a very flimsy manila envelope, so the postman crammed it into my mailbox. The pages were bent and the spine was warped. Now, I'm a reader more than a collector, so I could still enjoy the comic, but it still stinks because I didn't pay for the beat-up copy.
It sounds like Gemstone is pretty good about shipping their comics though. Usually even just a cardboard backing is all you need for a comic to arrive in good shape, but if they've got cardboard envelopes, that's even better.
