Topic: Mickey's Current Address?

I've been reading past Disney Comics (Mickey Mouse Adventures) which was published by Disney, and I see Mickey's hometown as Mouston. I know that Gemstone no longer publishes a Mickey Mouse title (more's the pity), what was or is Mickey's place of residence when last we left him? I have read it might be Toon Town, as Gemstone editers felt Mouseton was too much like Houston, which to me smakes way too hard of the place where Roger Rabbit was the primary resident. This, in my view, makes Mickey a second class citizen. I liked Mouseton, which seemed to honor Mickey in the same way the Duckburg does homage to Donald (even though most of the other residents of Duckberg are dogs or, sometimes, pigs or even humans. Perhaps Mousetown? Mouseville? --Mykal Banta

Gottfredson used "Mouseville" one time. But The owners of Mighty Mouse have a problem with that, as they used "Mouseville" in ALL their cartoons (and, presumably) in all their comic books. So, Gladstone was obliged to refrain from using Mouseville. Mouseville is what I would prefer, as that is what I remember, from reading "Mickey Mouse Outwits The Phantom Blot" as a young child. Anything else is false.

Robb: Interesting. Thanks for the Info. Gottfredson certainly was the man where Mickey was concerned and absolutely came up with the perfect residence for Mickey. Too bad Mighty Mouse scooped him. What would be wrong with Mouseburg? That way, both of Disney's great characters get equal empires in which to reign. With Barks and Rosa, donald has certainly gotten a more complete cosmology, but Gottfredson, it might be said, has never had a Rosa to add depth to the history. Although, of course, Mickey has had many great artists as well (Marco Rota as one of many examples) but no one seems to have had the storytelling of Rosa. Believe me, I am not slighting the many greats that have followed after Gottfredson in doing the mouse (my current favorite being Noel Van Horn). But Donald and Uncle Scrooge have really benifited from a clear, definite, and expanded backstory, courtesy of Mr. Rosa. --Mykal Banta

I don't know of any Marco Rota Mickey Mouse stories. I think maybe you are referring to Romano Scarpa here? He is my 2nd favourite Mouse artist.

Robb: No, I meant to say Marco Rota, but you are correct; it was a very poor example of the point I was trying to make. Romano Scarpa would have been a far better example of a great artist known for his work on Mickey Mouse. Rota has done Mickey, too, but not so much published in USA, and of course best known as a Donald and Uncle Scrooge artist. I just have always liked the Italian comics I have seen with Rota doing Mickey. Thanks for the catch. By the way, Scarpa is one of my favorites, too. In fact, I have just purchased both volumes of the Disney Master's Series in hardcover of Scarpa's work. They are in Italian, and I will have to have them translated. Speaking of Romano Scarpa, I sure would love to see something like a hardcover Scarpa Library done in englsih.

This was the official position in 2003??but in 2004, Gemstone and Disney agreed to use Mouseton again after all, and it has since appeared in dozens of stories.
Rob is right about the reason we can't use Mouseville in new stories. Viacom actually owns the name. I like Mouseton fine as a substitute, though, and have since its creation (1990).

You know, Mykal, we do publish new Mickey stories in more than 50% of the present WDC&S. They haven't stopped just because Mickey's own titles did. WDC&S often has new Goofy and Horace stories, too, also of course taking place in Mouseton.

Rob, Marco Rota has indeed done a number of Mickey stories, including "Operation: Big Glutton" in WDC&S 631-632 (1998). Alas, most simply haven't been published Stateside, though maybe we'll fix that in the future.

I, too, would love to have a Romano Scarpa Collection published in English (or Dutch-but the latter is not likely). But, I just hope they segregate his Mouse and Duck stories (grouping them together). I hated the fact that Egmont alternated his Duck and Mouse stories in his Hall of Fame book. I LOVE his Mouse artwork and writing. It is not so far from Gottfredson's work and spirit. I don't really like his Duck art. But, the stories are very nice, and well written. The artwork is decent, but not what i like to see. Of course, I'd want to get all his Duck stories, nevertheless.

David: I am so glad to hear that Mouseton has been given the official OK ! I always liked it and thought it the perfect place for Mickey and friends. I love WDC&S and eagerly await every new (or reprint) Mickey story. I am currently collecting back issues of both WDC&S as well as Uncle Scrooge. I just would love for Mickey to appear as the headliner on a comic of his own (I miss the great Mickey Mouse and Friends and Mickey Mouse adventures covers, which was another place to see great MM artists strut their stuff. David: while I have your attention, let me say thank you to you and Gemstone for continuing the great Disney comics. Both your current published titles are the best penciled, inked and colored comics in the world. They also contain the most subtle, intelligent writing of any comics going. I only wish you could give us more.
Robb: I agree 100% - give me the Mickey Scarpa all the way. As a Mickey artist, he was the tops - as a Donald artist, I always felt he would rather have been doing Mickey and Goofy (only Noel Van Horn can compare with his loose as a goose Goofy).

I too like Mouseton as Mickey's hometown. As for a Scarpa Album Series that does like a good idea only I don't think they should segregate the Duck and the Mouse stories. I think he did a good job on both Universes. Maybe they should have a special series for crossover stories (Mainly Donald and Mickey crossover stories)
