Topic: Better scans of Dutch José Carioca characters

(14 messages)

Been thinking about doing a José Carioca family tree, or at least doing the skeleton of one others may work from. Speaking Portuguese, I can go and search for Brazilian communities for help with the Brazilian side of things- but I've no idea of Dutch. So instead, I've got to ask here if anyone's got good scans and information of

Cousin Carlos, from H 2010-204 http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=H+2010-204
(is he just named Carlos? No family name?)

Cousin Enrico, from H 2010-030 http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=H+2010-030
(whom incidentally sounds more Spanish- Henrique would be more Portuguese, I think. As explained in the IDW wishlist thread though, I'm no expert in Brazilian names. Also, again- no surname? Or do we assume he's Enrico Carioca?)

... just get me the panel, please :V, from H 2010-130 http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=H+2010-130
Have any of these been reused, meanwhile?

Additionally, if you know of more family members he's had that are relevant. I'll start checking over on the lusophone side of things- there's all the various "regional stereotype" cousins, Zé Paulista, Zé Queijinho, etc, and there's the grandfather, Zé do Engenho, but I'll try and see if there's more. There were at least stories with the characters in a Western setting, although it's arguable if that counts as ancestors.

As a subscriber of the Dutch Donald Duck Weekblad, I'm pretty sure I've got all three of them. I'm very busy at the moment, but I'll try and scan them as soon as possible.
A "José Carioca family tree" sounds very interesting indeed. I'd be very interested in doing the visual part of the tree (of course, only if you wouldn't want to do that yourself).
In case you missed her: Grandma Carioca (José's grandmother, as you might have guessed) is a recurring character in Dutch comics strips. http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c=Oma+Carioca . I believe her husband was briefly shown on a small portrait in the background of one comic, but I'll have to double check that.
Here's an excerpt from the "My De Spell family tree" topic, in which I mentioned some other relatives of José:
Quote from user: ScroogerelloQuote from user: Robb_KQuote from user: Mr. MI would love to see Carioca family tree as well, but that's rely on one's access to Brazylian stories....
I would like to see such a thing, myself, as I'm writing some new José Carioca stories, in the classic, Murray style, and I have no idea about the Brasilian added relatives, as I know only the stories that have been made in USA and The Netherlands, which contain almost no relatives of his.

There are several relatives of José who have appeared in the Dutch one-pagers from 2011-2012 by Bas Heymans and Jan Kruse. Some examples are Cousin Carlos (from http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=H+2010-204), Cousin Enrico (from http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=H+2010-030) and a whole bunch of unnamed relatives from http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=H+2010-130 . And of course, these one-pagers also introduced a new, recurring relative of José's; Grandma Carioca (http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c=Oma+Carioca), who still appears on some occasions. Anyway, these are the relatives you probably already knew. Apart from the Dutch comics, the Brazillian comics introduced a lot of Carioca's cousins and uncles of José's. This story is a good example: http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+920242 .
Carioca's family tree would, however, be a very typical Disney character family tree; no parents, no siblings and a huge amount of nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

By the way, Enrico is an Italian name, and to my knowledge there is quite a sizeable Italian community in Brazil. It would make sense for José to have an cousin of Italian descent with an Italian name.

Enrico is Italian, Enrique is Spanish.

Here you go, TheKMM (and sorry for the bad quality of the colours).

The last panel you asked for (with all the relatives having dinner) I couldn't find, unfortunately. I might have thrown the issue away some years ago.
By the way, I found no less than 4(!) different grandfathers of José Carioca on the INDUCKS. Again, according to the INDUCKS, they appeared in the following stories:
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+810227
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+73018
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+860195&search=grandpa%20%20Joe%20Carioca
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+74359 (this one also seems to show an older female relative of José on the first page. His mother/grandmother, maybe?)

In your earlier post, you mentioned that you might be able to get in contact with Brazilian fans. If you do so, could you do me a favour and ask if, by any chance, they happen to have a scan of the following characters from a bunch of Brazilian Disney comics? I'm searching for these scans (among others that haven't been printed in Brazil) for some of the Disney character family trees I'm constructing. Many thanks in advance! :)

You scratch my back, I scratch yours! These I managed to get a hold of-
http://i.prntscr.com/0253528b60ee4f5c84264dcbe6497836.png
Pedro Bafo-de-Onça (Peter Pete? If I may suggest a fan name, Pete is known as Joo in Portuguese, so maybe Pedro should be John?)
He's described simply as "just like his brother, but blond"
http://i.prntscr.com/4d5abd426809480caba40dac2725d322.png
Magica's Uncle, "Mago Zuc" (Warlock Zuc? Zuc is a nonsense word, just something like "Abracadabra")
He'd been gone for centuries, Magica thought he'd gone missing. She finds her portrait, turns out he'd been forced into the painting by his fellow wizards due to constantly tricking them and stealing their stuff, since he never managed to make spells of his own.

Thanks for the info, TheKMM! The two images you sent aren't displayed on my computer (does anyone else have this problem, too?), so I can't see them (yet), but I'm curious as to what they are like. Can you maybe post them using a different image storing programme?

Not only are the links you posted not live, but they cannot even be copied! Can you post them in a different format?

How odd- something must've gone wrong with my screencapture program I use to upload images already cropped! Let's try that again

http://i.imgur.com/SCyIvh3.png
http://i.imgur.com/Wvh1zI3.png

These should work, I'm seeing the url itself- it's imgur, that always works

(Also, Scroogerello, quick nitpick- it's KKM, two kays one em, not KMM ;) )

Anyways, adding to those, some of the Carioca family

http://i.imgur.com/uuq6ryq.jpg

Grandpa Josué Carioca, living in 1900. Was Rio's biggest deadbeat (this is the only translation I'm finding for the term Caloteiro, meaning someone who never pays their debts, and a point of pride for Zé Carioca)

http://i.imgur.com/Djo9JFp.png

Grandpa Zeca Paiva (Zeca is normally a contraption of José Carlos, although I suppose in this case it could also be José Carioca- so he's either José Carlos Paiva or José Carioca Paiva), here depicted in the 1920's. Went to the 1930, 1934, and 1938 FIFA World Cups- not mentioned for the remaining ones, and Zé Carioca only mentions being there starting from the 1966 one.

(also in the same issue- Rosinha, Zé's steady girlfriend, was born on January the 10th)

http://i.imgur.com/yZCGUro.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/MvTO3Kt.png

Zé Fornalha and Zé Catimba... They don't actually say which one is which, but as the one dressed as the Colonel is the one talking and introduces "Fornalha" first, I'd guess he's Fornalha.

They're described as the Colonel's "sobrinhos-tortos", Ie "bent nephews". I'm not familiar with the expression, and only managed to find an explanation for "primo-torto", which even then is confusing me... but I think the idea is that they're the Colonel's nephews not by blood but by marriage of their parents into the Colonel's family, and thus they're not eligible to inherit his possessions. I'll try and divine this further.

Noteworthy- they don't appear to have designs of their own. The one I'm guessing is Fornalha spends all the story disguised as the Colonel, and the one I'm guessing as Catimba just looks like a cross-dressing Paulista.

http://i.imgur.com/anDNLdW.png
Meanwhile, here's the aforementioned Colonel Zé do Engenho. Rich, with a big estate, lives in a mansion on a tiny river island, owns all the lands on a 50km area around, at the very least. Engenho is a sugar cane mill, but can also mean the farm it's in. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engenho

He's not very aware of his nephews, but makes them his heirs after seeing how they dealt with two crooked employees of him in his first story. Zé doesn't remember him very well. He's Zé's great-uncle- much like a smaller mirror of Scrooge and Donald.

http://i.imgur.com/hDtb0eg.png

Zé Paulista, Zé Carioca, Zé Jandaia, Zé Queijinho, Zé Pampeiro.

From So Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul.

Worth pointing out, is that Zé knew Paulista before, but doesn't know Jandaia nor Pampeiro in the first story they appear.

Also worth pointing out- all of these Zés share the first name, but then the family name is different for each. However, in each case, the name is actually a nickname of some sorts- which can lead to asking, are they actually named like this? Is José Carioca really named Carioca, or is that just a nickname since he's a carioca, like how Paulista is a paulista, etc etc?

Additionally, these are more well-known, but may as well bring them up

http://i.imgur.com/6JU2oYT.png

Zico and Zeca, Zé's nephews, created to replace either HDL or Morty and Ferdie in the 60's, when they'd grab Donald and Mickey stories and draw Zé over the protagonist.

http://i.imgur.com/78zEmq1.png

Unrelated parrot, might be fun to consider him part of the family. Zé Louro, musician. I say he's unrelated since despite looking like Zé, so did the entire band (unless we want to have them all in the family?), Zé didn't recognize him or the band (nor vice-versa), and the pattern of having a parrot looking like Zé named "Zé Something" but not being his family happened before.

With all this, and from my prowlings on Inducks, I'm left needing scans of-

http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c=Ze%27+Cariboca Zé Cariboca
http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c=Ze%27+Pantaneiro - Zé Pantaneiro

Additionally, Inducks has scans for Pororoca and Zé Baiano, but without very good context

http://coa.inducks.org/hr.php?normalsize=1&image=http://outducks.org/webusers/webusers-char/br_zc_2249d_003_pororoca.jpg
Uncle Pororoca, apparently a wealthy guy

http://coa.inducks.org/hr.php?normalsize=1&image=http://outducks.org/webusers/webusers-char/br_zc_1531b_007_zebaiano.jpg
Zé Baiano, from the Bahia, apparently even lazier than Carioca

Anyways, could I also get some more context on Grandma Carioca, Scroogerello? I forgot to mention her in my OP
Artemi
Wow! Great that you bring up this issue, as Ze Carioca is my favorite Disney character. Some nice scans and infos here. Some of the characters I didn't even know about. I knew of his relatives from different states but some of the more distant relatives and antecedents were unknown to me.

I believe you're also missing José's aunt Dita from http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+880047 .
I also found some stories (using the INDUCKS search engine) that (again, according to the INDUCKS) feature some uncles of José, which are the following:
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+900073b
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+950138

According to the INDUCKS description of one of his stories, he his (indeed) José's wealthy uncle, and he's allergic to dust.
Quote from user: TheKKMAnyways, could I also get some more context on Grandma Carioca, Scroogerello? I forgot to mention her in my OP
She is José's wise old grandmother. She is like a Carioca version of Grandma Duck, but tends to be a little more strict at her grandson at times (e.g. when he wants to borrow money from her). She mainly appears in one-page gags. According to the INDUCKS, she has also appeared in a Brazilian comic in 2013, but I haven't got that one.
So...José doesn't have any parents/siblings? I already thought so, but it's still remarkable; he's such a popular Disney character. Were his parents/sibling(s) never mentioned either?

Incidentally, Scroogerello, would you happen to be the same Scroogerello from dA, GlitteringGoldie in tumblr?

Awesome!! :D:D Did you do the sketching yourself? The portraits are so well drawn, and I think you handled the absence of José's parents quite well.
Here's a scan of José's uncle Papanatas, who is a dentist, according to the INDUCKS:

I've found some other relatives of Joe's that seem to be missing in the tree:
