"This film is not a quest to find Barks, who prefers his privacy. It is an exploration to discover why his 'simple' comic strip made such an impact on so many readers and why it still means so much to us today."
Why are they almost directly quoting the promo for Dear Mr. Watterson? At http://dearmrwatterson.com/DMW/the_film.html it says:
"This film is not a quest to find Bill Watterson, or to invade his privacy. It is an exploration to discover why his 'simple' comic strip made such an impact on so many readers in the 80s and 90s, and why it still means so much to us today."
This quote doesnt even apply to Barks, who's been dead for 14 years. Why would they take a quote from another film about a cartoonist and apply it in a way that doesn't even make sense? This sounds pretty fishy to me...

This is so shady.
* I generally don't think Indiegogo's flexible funding model is a great idea for things that obviously need a substantial budget. This will get the $347 on July 30, when, y'know, if you need $33k, that's not even gonna get you from one interviewee to the other.
* The entire first section is sloppily edited from the DMW site.
* "The documentary is narrated by John Goodman." As far as I can tell, Mr Goodman doesn't seem to be in the habit of lending his services to low-budget documentaries.
* The second section is copied directly from Gawker and from a description of a book about Barks.
* The third section is copied completely from the Disney Wikia.
* The "exclusive interview" was first posted by the Oregon Cartoon Institute in August, 2010.
* The "Here's what you'll make happen" section is again a direct quote from DMW, this time from their Kickstarter.
* The "Your help" section is from the Dark Side of Disney Kickstarter.
* "Geoffroy Koeberle" is credited on IMDb as assistant director on multiple major motion pictures, but the "Who are we?" text is directly copied from here though the French title at the end of that second paragraph has probably been put through Google Translate or a similar service.
* "Melissa Mars" is also a real person, but again, text completely copied from here.
* "Sebastian Cordes" has linked to the Indiegogo from his twitter, I guess, though I can find no reference to anyone else "involved" in it having promoted this anywhere on social media.
Absolutely do not give money to this. You'd get more out of giving your money directly to a Beagle Boy, I think.
I can not stress enough how shady this project seems to me. Do not give money to this.

Good work, Alex!
The Indiegogo project page looks a bit "copy-and-paste".
I can see that Fantagraphics has commented this project.

I've shot off some tweets to Fantagraphics on the subject, hoping they might agree. If they don't respond, I'll send an email, too.

Goed gedaan! I, too, think this is a ridiculous excuse for a documentary. The perpetrator just seems to be stealing pieces of others' work, cobbling it together, and making a short film, having virtually no cost overhead but his own minimal time, and then expecting to get thousands of US Dollars for doing that, in the form of $400 "donations". What a scam! I can't believe that Fantagraphics has endorsed his work!

Ironically, it's these kinds of people Barks warned us about on numerous occasions in his stories.

Oh, heck, I hadn't even looked at the perks in any kind of detail. They're all either copied from the Dark Side of Disney Kickstarter, the Dear Mr Watterson Kickstarter, or garbage. An original signed Barks drawing for $500?? And the ending of this story is that Santa was real all along, right?

I communicated with Koeberle after he posted on the Barks Facebook page and I responded. My post (which I accidentally almost immediately deleted) noted no Barks expert involvement: Geoff Blum, Michael Barrier, Don Ault, Thomas Andrae or myself. He promised to soon contact me but over a week later still has not. Brent Swanson tells me he shares the doubts expressed here. A while back some film student from New York contacted Geoff Blum about his idea for a Barks documentary but it appears to not be happening. Let us remember proposed projects not happening is the norm. On his blog Mark Evanier recently noted "During Comic-Con, I always get tagged to be videoed for four or five documentaries on comic book history, at least one of which is eventually completed and released". I think the proposed budget is low, considering it will have to entail at the very least shooting in Oregon (where Barks grew up and lived in his later years) and California (where he lived while doing the comics). To get cooperation from Disney to use clips from the cartoons he worked on will cost big bucks. Caveat emptor!
