Norm McGary was an illustrator for Western in the 50s and 60s. He did The Lemonade King with Barks, and much more. His paintings (are they paintings? I think they're paintings) of funny animals are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. So I tried to find out more about him. But I can't seem to find much. Does anyone of you know more about him?

I couldn't find a biography on him that said more than "he lived in Banning, California (very near to where Barks lived in San Jacinto and Hemet), and that he worked for The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Brothers and Hanna Barbera, and also illustrated books of independent authors, and worked for Western publishing for over 20 years" (also drawing characters from Walter Lantz, and presumably MGM). An independent series that he illustrated is The "Andy Ant" books. He also illustrated "Ryan and The Circus Wheels". The latest book of his that was listed was published in 1988.

And could you guess what happened to the art? I know that the standard for lineart at Western was to throw the original art away, and to keep the 'masters' for print and foreign distribution. But these are paintings, with colors, and they were also distributed to other countries.

One of the comments mentioned that he passed away on Feb. 10, 2012. He went on to do artwork for Christian projects after his animation career.

Much of the artwork for the Little Golden Books etc that Western produced has survived. While they destroyed the comic art it seems that they saved the artwork produced for regular books, coloring books etc. Wouldn't be surprised if the Disney artwork for the Golden Books survived too.
