For those of you who might be interested in expanding your collection of Disney comics character trading cards beyond the Gladstone Barks cards.... I just discovered that a large set of cards has been produced in German featuring Disney comic book characters, Ducks and Mice and all. If you go to ebay.de and put "Topps Duck stars" in the search engine, you will find what I'm talking about. A number of the eBay sellers there will ship to the USA. This is a really nice and broad collection of cards. I'm not interested in the ones from the Mouseton universe myself, but there are lots of those, from Horace Horsecollar to Atomo Bleep-Bleep. I got HDL as Junior Woodchucks (there are two of these--I like the one where they're laughing), Junior Chickadees, Rockerduck (Klaus Klever), Madam Mim and Magica. (Yes, I already have the Gladstone Magica card and an Italian Magica card, but One Cannot Have Too Many Magica Cards.) And (wait for it...) Della Duck! Yes, *they have Della Duck!* Not a Rosa drawing, but compatible with Rosa's version of her.
There are also a bunch of cards picturing places in Duckburg/Mouseton (Donald's, Daisy's, Minnie's etc. homes, the money bin, Gyro's workshop, Grandma Duck's farm, etc.), and a few featuring significant objects: the JW Guidebook (but with a JW hat on the cover, not the JW logo), Daisy's diary, Magica's purse, the #1 dime, Donald's car, etc.
The exchange rate means that these are quite affordable.

WOW! Thank you for sharing, Matilda. They have so many different cards it's amazing. It looks like there are even 3 Helpers, or maybe I'm seeing the back on one of the cards? I have all 3 sets of the Gladstone trading cards (Heroes and Villains, Donald Duck, and Uncle Scrooge) and they didn't even have Helper in there at all (but Gyro twice).

I prefer the laughing Junior Woodchucks, too, and especially like the card with Magica's sorcery shop on Mt. Vesuvius. I will also definitely need General Snoozie. Are these the same size as the Gladstone cards? What is on the back of the cards?

Pro Set was a Dallas company which produced trading cards from 1989 to 1993 and then filed for bankruptcy. Most of their card sets were of football players and hockey players but in 1991 they released a set of The Little Mermaid trading cards. There were 110 cards. I have most of them. I prefer buying individual packs of cards. That, to me, is more fun than buying an entire set all at once. One of the cards shows the scene where King Triton is greeting all the mer-people and a tiny Mickey, Donald and Goofy are standing on the ocean floor. The Little Mermaid cards are still being offered for sale on eBay, Amazon and other sites.

They are the same size as the Gladstone cards, standard trading card size. On the back it just says "Topps Duck Stars."

Yeah, I'd get a Helper card, too, if I hadn't already made one for myself that I like better! Same goes for Tabby (German name: Schnurri, which cracks me up), Donald's cat in the Fethry stories.

I like Magica's house, too. Also Grandma's farm. The houses are not so special, and of course the money bin is the European version, which looks wrong to me.

Making a few of your own trading cards is a very clever idea that I had never thought of. It would help fill in a few additional characters that I would like to see in the Gladstone set. Maybe Catapult the Frog, the homing pigeon who stopped for whistles, and Dread Valley Sandy who comes into town once a month with a sackful of gold dust. Yes, definitely an American style money bin, too! I was trying to think of the best way to do this.

First thing, I guess, would be to pick out the images I want and make color photo copies. I could even increase or decrease the sizes so they would be right. Then I was thinking I could paste the pictures on some of the white comic backing board you get with comics. After that I could take them over to Kinko's and cut them to perfect trading card size on their paper cutter. Hmm... now would I want pictures on the backs, too?

Maybe I could give some of the cards numbers. If Gyro's 23 I'll number Helper 23B.

Carl Barks never gave Gyro's helper any name other than "Helper" but in the Italian comic books the character is known as Edi (after Thomas Edison, inventor of the phonograph, the motion-picture camera, the fuoroscope, the long-lasting electric light bulb and many other devices). A plastic toy airplane with Gyro and Edi was produced in Italy and offered as a premium by Topolino comics. In a few of the DuckTales cartoons, the helper's name is Little Bulb.
Does anyone have any of the Walt Disney World Transportation Collector Cards? There are 18 cards showing Walt Disney World busses, boats and monorails. Each card also depicts a different Disney character. The cards are not really publicized. The only way to get them is by requesting them from the drivers.

In Barks' working notes for Gyro stories, he called Helper "Little Bulbhead," commonly shortened to "Bulby." For whatever reason, though, he never used the name in a story??maybe because it lacked that certain something? (IMHO, "Little Bulbhead" sounds like an insult and isn't as appealing as most character names created by Barks.)

I don't know if it's the best way, but the way I've made my own trading cards is to start with scans of the desired images (front & back), make them the correct size, print them, and then laminate the two pieces of paper back-to-back. I make the two pieces of paper 2.25 " by 3.25"--that leaves room for the edges of the laminate beyond the paper, and I can still store them with standard trading cards, which are 2.5" by 3.5".

Catapult, that's a great idea! I love Catapult! Perhaps I will make a Catapult card, too. The next cards I've planned to make are of Eurasia Toft, who is appearing in this week's Mickey Mouse, and Minima De Spell. Minima is Magica's niece, created by Michael T. Gilbert for a DuckTales story, and I just finally bought myself a copy of that first Minima story, in the CartoonTales DuckTales book (Dime after Dime). Two out of the three other stories she's been in (all Italian stories) I have in the Magica "Big Black Book" (German version), with editorial essays by David Gerstein!

If you make a card for "Catapult", then you should make a series of all Donald's/His Nephews' pets, including: Bolivar, Smugsnorkle Squatty, Cheltenham(chipmunk), their alligator, their talking magpie, Bornworthy, Bernie, Tabby, their pet (organgrinder) monkey, The Fraidy Falcon, the falcon Donald's uncle sent him, Rocket Wing, etc.

Rocket Wing! Yes, that was the name I was trying to think of. Thanks also, Robb, for reminding me of the Smugsnorkle Squatty who couldn't do anything. Just thinking of that story makes me laugh. He definitely needs to have a card. And thank you, Matilda, for your trading card manufacturing process complete with measurements. I'm going to try it and end up with some new Carl Barks cards for myself... and Arpin Lusene and the Black Night and... Oh boy!

I thought I might be the only one who cares about these cards but I find them to be a lot of fun.
