Yes, the rumors are true: new American made Disney comics are coming out. The original Boom run of Darkwing Duck will be republished, with remastered art and talky-bits by the original Darkwing comics team, Aaron Sparrow and James Silvani.
The colorist is Andrew Dalhouse, lettering by Deron Bennett.
Right now, they're slated for publication in Germany, with most likely more countries to come.
I made this topic to announce that, but also to say this:
Talking to Mr. Sparrow, it looks like there is a way for it to get published in the US... but it's gonna require some noise. If you know anybody who can report this stuff to comics and animation news sites, tell them. Social media? Tumblr, twitter, if you're a user, use'em. Please.
I'm not joking when I say there's a chance that this could snowball in to more here. It's happened before. It can happen again.

The remastered art is, at the very least, minor touchups to things that looked a bit iffy (eye placement, occasional proportion issues, or just typical art goofups), as well as some new panels to accomodate the rewrites
James Silvani did this and the original. The retouches, believe me, make things a LOT better, but are never intrusive.

As far as I know, it's in German. But when I asked who the team was a few days ago, Deron Bennett was mentioned as letterer. You could probably ask Aaron Sparrow at @Aaron_Sparrow on twitter for more specifics.

Anyway, I hope for your sake that these come to the US, but I personally can't get very excited--I liked the original stories well enough, but certainly not enough to buy revised versions of them. If this leads to new stories, I suppose I'll pick them up, but as I'm sure I've made known before, things like this really aren't part of the reason I'm in Disney fandom.

My excitement for this comes from yes, the revised versions of the story... the revised versions of the stories, done by Sparrow rather than Brill, is one of the most important elements. The way he was screwed out of that job was pretty frustrating, especially when we can see things like 'The Duck Knight Returns'.
But the other is that the reason, as I understand it, Marvel hasn't done something with Disney is that BOOM reprints simply didn't sell very well. I heard rumblings of a wing being planned, but without the numbers to support it, it never happened. This is an actual chance to see more done with all Disney characters, which is a point that I can get behind.

Man oh man, I just hatehatehate the thought that Disney/Marvel decided there was no market for new Disney comics in the USA because the BOOM reprint volumes (!) didn't sell well.

I actually had the impression that the Darkwing Duck comics sold quite good in comparison with other comics in general. Unfortunately I can't find the article. I hope as well Disney / Marvel will continue with new publications.

They sold well at BOOM, but after the fact, they didn't make as much Marvel had hoped.
If we want US Disney comics, spreading the word for the new DW stuff is a good way to make that happen.

I can't help wondering how much of a market there would be for these "remastered" comics. Surely a large percentage of those who bought the Boom issues would be uninterested in buying them again, and how large a market is there of interested people who DIDN'T read those? All I'm saying is, if THIS is what we're pinning our hopes on for a revitalized line of US Disney comics, I can't say I like our odds.

In an environment where the Fantagraphics books are successful, proving that there is a demand for new material (which is what Darkwing represents) through the use of a built-in customer base (which is what a nostalgic property like this kind of cartoon has) is actually one of the better chances we've ever had. It serves as a lynchpin.
And showing that interest can largely be accomplished by using the collective influence individuals have in social media. Send comics websites emails. Use twitter. Be visible, be vocal. That's all we can hope to do.

But a comic only very tenuously connected with the classics lines that--letsfaceit--has for all intents and purposes nothing in common with them? I have my doubts.
