In many comics, we can see Scrooge forcing Donald to work for him because of Donald's huge debt. But how did it get so big in the first place? What is the first comic the debt "appeared" in?

Donald is often in debt because he has the VERY costly responsibility of raising 3 young children, who need to be fed, clothed (constantly new sizes-growing) and bought toys, and doctor and dentist visits, etc. Anyone who has raised kids knows how very costly it is. But Donald has the added problem of being a very unsteady bread winner. He is constantly fired from his new jobs. And, when his billionaire uncle hires him to "save" him from debtor's prison, he pays Donald only slave wages (making it impossible for him to repay his debts.

It does seem an odd real-life intrusion in books mostly aimed at children...but then again, so does Uncle Scrooge's worrying about his businesses. I guess Barks gave kids more credit for understanding the world around them than say, the writers of "Chip 'n' Dale", "Scamp" or "Tom and Jerry" (to name just a few of their lighter "funnybooks") at Western Publishing did. I wonder if Donald's being constantly in debt and rich old Uncle Scrooge still having his worries too wasn't Barks' working out his own real-life frustrations and insecurities on paper.

The long, long, long list of debts Donald has to Scrooge mainly appears in Italian comics. I don't know how old it is, but it's got to be at least 10-20 years old. Who came up with that anyway?

I don't know, but I like the running gag about that debt list. I remember that Donald once tried get rid of it by eating it up, but when he was finished (after a while) Scrooge just told him that was a copy. I always thought that was hilarious.

Canon Scrooge isn't like that.It was other creators,after Barkses era,who turned him into a beast.
