Topic: Why is The Life & Times Of Scrooge McDuck Vol 2 worth so much?

I seriously don't understand how this book went from 30 dollars to 550 to over 1000 dollars. I understand Kamboom lost the Disney contract making this rare as it was only a partial run, but its a reprinting of a story. It's not the first time its been printed nor will it be the last, on top of which I dont think there is enough demand for the book period.
Don't get me wrong, I own it and have never opened it (again because I already have other printings) so it's fully mint, and I would love to sell it for 1,000 plus dollars just to invest in other Carl Barks/Don Rosa collectibles. I just don't see how it could possibly be so valuable.
Case in point, it's selling for more right now on ebay that a copy of FOUR COLOR #9 (by the way I will am willing to trade my mint copy of The Life & Times Of Scrooge McDuck Vol 2 for that at any time, email me).

Unbelievable...I saw a copy on amazon.com that wanted $1,800 for a copy...I am not really sure what is driving the price up. Scarcity, demand???

I'm not any kind of programming expert, so don't ask me to explain this in any more detail, but as I understand it online retailers rarely determine prices manually; rather, they have algorithms that compare the prices to those of other retailers to try to remain competitive. Sometimes, something goes haywire and the prices get kind of idiotic. Looking at the amazon listing, it seems like this is almost certainly what's going on here. A telltale sign of is that you have copies going for weirdly specific, arbitrary-sounding prices like $1,887.93, which clearly weren't hit upon by an actual human. The book may be kinda rare in any case, I don't know, but definitely not THAT rare. Sadly for anyone who happens to own it, I very much you're actually going to be able to sell it for anything like that.

These high prices are just a wish from third party sellers at Amazon. I think no one would pay over $100 for this book.

I found it last year in a comic book store in Durham for just about 20 dollars.
If I had known I would have bought also the second copy I saw there.
Market is kind of crazy these days.
On the other end, I found on e-bay for a few dollars the original comic books containing the Barks stories drawn by Harvey Eisenberg (printed in Tom & Jerry) and the reprints of Our Gang stories which were not included in the Barks Bear Book (again in Tom & Jerry).
This were (for me) good bargains

That's insane, when I bought part two off of amazon in December I believe it was only as you said $30 (they ran out of part one though, and it has increased in price since *sigh*), and it seems to be the same for the .ca version of amazon as well, though I'm not sure if the prices align with each other or not. But it strange that part one is much cheaper even though people usually buy them together, but as a wild guess for a person that knows nothing about amazon, GeoX might be right, though why "used" is so high is probably due to greed.
For goodness sakes getting "His life and times" by Carl Barks is cheaper! At least the companion is at a good price

Actually, it's probably not selling for a $1000, that's just what a dealer is asking. A few dealers have tried to corner the ebay market on some of the scarcer Don Rosa and Carl Barks items. They discover a comic that people are looking for and that is hard to find. Then they buy every copy that comes up on ebay. Very often it will go for cheap and that dealer might even be the only bidder. But if you want it yourself you will have to pay a lot more by either buying their rediculously overpriced issue with a Buy It Now price or bid against them. They also might price all their Life and Times books at a $1000 and then one at $200 which will make it seem like a deal even though that dealer probably paid $30 or less himself.

This is all very frustrating for me. They make it hard for me to get stories I want to read without having to pay them a big premium. I can't even get one copy while they're sitting on multiple copies and probably haven't even read any of the stories. They're just into it for the money. Because they're not readers or fans of the stories, though, sometimes some super rare ones might slip by them that they don't even recognize.

A couple years ago Gemstone every week was slowly listing all their remaining Barkster bronzes on ebay. They would only have a bid ot two and they'd go for $200-$300. I wanted to get one but no matter what I bidded I would never win even though I bidded more than they had sold for in the past. Then a little later I see one dealer has every single one listed at aound $700 or more which was over my budget. He completely cornered the market and I couldn't ever even get one for myself.

With only a few items for sale and a lot of people wanting them they can create a new higher price. That happened to some extent with the First Series Dark Horse Uncle Scrooge figure. It sold out at $50 and started reaching $400 on ebay. I even saw some auctions where I know for a fact there were phoney bids placed by the seller for his own item under another name hoping someone else would get caught up in the frenzy and put an even higher bid in. The demand has dropped considerably (there is only a small amount of Uncle Scrooge collectors who mostly all have it now) and the price has dropped somewhat. It can be a wild game out there on ebay and things aren't always as they appear so use plenty of caution.

It's called free enterprise.

It's a rare book and the best comics of Uncle Scrooge out there, I was lucky to buy them for 25$ each vol1 and vol2 when they were published by Boom! They were great for Disney comics...

Well, these have come down considerably in price online...

There is one ebay seller who tries to corner the market on Don Rosa and also many Carl Barks items. He will, for instance, buy every single Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck and then relist them again with extremely high Buy It Now prices. In the last few weeks he didn't buy every one, though, and others were able to get them for a lot less.

I hope Fantagraphics get to publish these books soon. I'm certainly not paying those ridiculous prices. I have them all on my PC but it's not the same.

They have the single-artist Disney license. Theoretically, they could decide to publish the Complete Don Rosa collection done for Egmont in the United States, localizing it for English if they wanted to. Or just the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck even.
But instead they're focused on the Carl Barks project. Which is... nice... but it has almost cardinal sins anyway, and that's really frustrating.

Michael Naiman sells original Don Rosa art on ebay and he now posts this in his listings.

"Due to recent modifications on my qualified bidders list,
there is now a better chance for everyone to get a piece of Rosa art!

I am trying to run auctions that enable all fans a chance to buy a piece of Rosa art,
but there is an eBay profiteer who is attempting to buy it all and then relist
it at absurd prices in order to cheat real fans who truly appreciate the artwork!
I am trying to block him from bidding, but he is being sneaky and devious."

One problem Michael has run into is that after he blocks this one buyer the buyer will then use a different identity to still bid. Now Michael's requiring his buyers to have at least 10 feedbacks or to contact him first. Almost every weekend Michael lists a couple new Don Rosa drawings. I always look forward to checking them out.

One another note I sure would love to see an authorized by Don complete English Disney Don Rosa collection!
