I HATE the fact that those nice Duck figures that belonged in those two Gyro stories were removed (just so Western could get the 2nd class postage discount)! I think Barks should have been allowed to re-edit them back to Ducks for The Carl Barks Library, in 1983. Then, we would have them "correct" now, for Fantographics' set. It would be nice to see what Daan Jippes could do to "re-create" them. It might be nice, also, to see what Daan could do to attempt to re-create a "Bobsled Race" story from the general layout of the "Snow Statue Story" from WDC 196.

Hey, Jippes is a great artist, but having him mess around with Barks art just because we don't like the eccentricities of a few stories? NO SALE.
I think it would be funny if someone in the here and now wrote a duck story that includes Speedy while doing absolutely nothing to introduce him; just treating him as though he were a regular character who had always been there.
And Mr. M, that image is beyond disturbing.

I never minded Morty and Ferdie's incursion into the Chained Lightning Gyro story (being a firm member of the Ducks and Mice Co-Existence Party), and actually enjoy Speedy's appearance as well--mainly because I first read the story when I was too young to know that Donald had originally been slated for the part, and liked Speedy's reference to "Gladstone" as his rival: I appreciated the idea the Gander torments and one-ups other people besides Donald, because it seemed so in-character for a jerk like Gladstone.

You have good points here. It's clear that "Bobsled Race" must have been made completely without connection to "The Snow Princess". Nevertheless, I think that using "The Snow Statue Story's plot with the poor kids and adapting that to having a bobsled race with a lot of sledding action, and both Donald and his nephews trying to win that race to give the prize brand new super streamlined bobsled to Widow Umble's kids, would make a very nice story.
Those plots are so similar, that their being turned in one week apart leads one to believe that that can be no coincidence. Perhaps Barks decided HIMSELF, without editor comment, that the story would work much better as a snow statue contest, and he told Western to disregard his first (Bobsled story) submittal, and that he'd send a reworking (Snow Statue Story) soon (one week later)?
