That song brings back memories for me. My Music and PE Teachers played that song on Fun Fridays back when I was in Elementary School. I almost forgot the song existed until now.

There is also a song about Gyro from the same album from 1982, Mousercise.

Was that one of the musical themes in The Ducktales TV Series? It's very ironic for me, as Edwin Starr has been a favourite with me since he started singing in the mid 1960s, and I bought all his 1960s records, and I even worked for Motown Records for several years. I only saw a few Ducktales episodes from its first season.

No, as pointed out before it was one of the songs on the Mousercise record, well before DuckTales. I remember this song vividly from my childhood. Don't recall the Gyro song though ... was that really on the same record? It is significant because at this point, Scrooge and the Beagle Boys had not yet really permeated public consiousness in any major way outside the comics. I recall a series of Disney books for children that came out in the early eighties, dealing with specific topics in each volume (dinosaurs, space, etc.) that featured Scrooge prominently, though. For the life of me, I can't remember the series' name, but I'd know it if I saw it. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about? This would have been the early eighties as well.

No, this never appeared on DuckTales. You might be confusing it with "The Boogie Beagle Blues" from "Beaglemania."

Yay! And it's available on iTunes! Thanks for posting, Mr. M! You're clearly not the only one who didn't know about this song, and is happy to find it! Now I've got a Donald Duck *playlist*, with this one and "The Screamin' Cowboy" (had to buy the CD to get that one, though...).

Who sang "The Screaming Cowboy"? I hope it's not that German Donaldist band that recorded a version. It was terrible! And who wrote the non-Barks lyrics to fill out the song? I've only heard a German version, with the base words probably based on a translation of Barks' version by Erika Fuchs. It might be nice to hear that song in Carl Barks' OWN language.

In other news, youtube also recommended this video, a montage of images from Rosa's Life & Times set to Flogging Molly's "Selfish Man," which I found quite effective.

The Disney CD version is the one you and I were discussing in 2008, Rob. I've learned since that time that the non-Barks lyrics are by Will Ryan.
(My MP3 link in that old thread no longer works; but you can now find the recording here??or a few more recent amateur versions here and here. Both amateur recordings take quite awhile to reach the point where Barks' lyrics occur.)

Thanks. It's pretty darn good! It took a LOT of work to write a whole song around Barks' small group of lyrics. But, unfortunately, in doing such a good job, they lost some of the spirit that spawned their effort. Barks had such few lyrics. They shouldn't have changed one of those few. It's "Screamin' my heart out FER you (not FOR you)! The spirit of this song was that it was a cliched hokey, heavily countrified, and crude and hickey. Barks was deliberate in making his wording show that. In addition, Donald's songs were supposed to be grating on the nerves crossing the line into being offensive upon hearing them over and over. The recorded song is too "pleasant" and not offensive at all. Also, it seems obvious that there should be wailing and even approaching screaming in the emotional parts, exaggerating the cliches of the cowboy wailing of the emotional country-western songs of the time by the big country/western stars who appeared on Grand Ol' Opry. Unfortunately, the recording keeps a mild volume and tone all throughout, and also keeps the same volume from beginning to end, making it pleasant, cute and boring, and unfunny. Really, we need a funny and at least mildly grating/offensive version, in the spirit of Barks' parody.
If this song doesn't bother ME, there is something very wrong, as I absolutely HATE formulaic, commercial country/western music (that's what drove me to the Rhythm and Blues radio stations at an extremely early age).
