Who knows this character? Phantom Duck is an Italian character, Donald Duck's secret identity.
He's the main protagonist of the PKNA series (Paperinik - Phantom Duck - New Adventures).
The series was extremely well-received at the beginning of its run, and saluted as an unexpectedly innovative project for Disney.

I know Paperinik an' I think it's a great character, but I don't like PK adventures versus aliens (except first adventures).

Paperinik is a great character, yes. (His English-language name is Duck Avenger, though -- not Phantom Duck.) The Ultraheroes version of the character was published by BOOM! a few months back.

Some information from Wikipedia about the PKNA series.
The PKNA writers developed more adult themes than the classical Disney stories published in the Italian magazine Topolino. Throughout the series' run, they used themes such as: the relationship between man and robot; the struggle between what is right and what is logical; the essence of true love; the difference between mankind and other alien races; the essence of being a superhero; the relationship between knowledge and power; the importance of History and past historical events.
Among the writers of the Pk Team, were many talented and generally young authors: Francesco Artibani, Davide Catenacci, Gianfranco Cordara, Bruno Enna, Tito Faraci, Augusto Macchetto, Alessandro Sisti, Ezio Sisto. The PK project was seen as a testbed for a generation of new authors, who were given ample freedom to innovate, leaving behind many of the typical storytelling conventions of the company and creating a blend of the "classical" Disney comics and the American superhero comic books, which were a primary and acknowledged source of inspiration. Despite this, both the company and the public were deeply used to Disney characters being used for kid-friendly stories, so that a slow transition towards edgier storytelling and graphic depictions was required.
Especially in the first issues, there is a contrast between the harsh themes hinted at or explicitly introduced by the narrative and the depicted events. It is made clear since the beginning that the Evron empire has depopulated a number of worlds, killing or enslaving billions of intelligent aliens, and a main character clearly announces to have sworn to destroy the entire Evronian race in revenge: but the fights with the Evronians mostly feature the usual Disney slapstick violence, with no graphic depictions of any hero killing or realistically wounding an enemy (while entire starships could be destroyed in the background). Despite this, the Italian readers didn't decry the restraint but were content with scenes they deemed already audacious for a conservative comics company like Disney.
The character of Paperinik was firmly based in the established Topolino continuity as the superheroic secret identity that Donald Duck had already assumed long before the start of the series: but connections with the "classic" Paperinik stories was cut short since the first number, giving Donald completely new allies, weaponry and occupations. The appearances of the other Disney Club characters was reduced to a minimum, and many of them (like Gyro Gearloose and Huey, Dewey & Louie) were written off the story even if they were featured prominently in the previous Paperinik adventures. This reinforced the notion that PK was meant to be a "real superhero", existing in its own world, related to but fundamentally different from the mostly parodic and humorous Paperinik.

When Boom took over the license I was hoping they'd publish these stories. The covers are spectacular.

I can confirm. The PKNA series is amazing.

The stories are spectecular, but if you like the classical Disney, this might not be your thing. It's very un-Disneylike.

I have problem with Papiernik stoires - not the PK NEW ADVENTURES but the regular ones. It's just odd how Donald as soon he puts on the mask becomes a complitly diffrent character. He stops being accident prone and becomes incredibly skillful... It's just not Donald anymore and I woudn't mind if it was some sort of magica transformation. But nope - he just puts on a mask and in a second his clumsiness, tendency to get angry and bad luck is ignore, and he becomes 10 times more clever and competend as well...

There are some stories that makes a good balance of Donald being still having his personality but in more cases it's just a wird change that makes him a diffrent character that loses all that makes his personality special in first place.

However the PK NEW ADVENTURES had some pretty great stories, some actually more mature and dark then regular ducks comic stuff. I don't spoil it but there is one particually story where a recruting character dies and it was done in a pretty beautifully and poetic way... It's actually one of my favorite duck stories

That's the point of the character. Paperinik/Duck Avenger is effectively a wish fulfillment fantasy for Donald.

Hum. I didn't know that... Or at least I never read a story when they establish this. Most Papernik stories I read are typical superheroe spoof (some new villian appear in town, Papernik overcomes him, the end)

I agree. And I like that. It's just like Reginella who is a romantic escape for Donald from his daily routine and the disaster of a girlfriend that is Daisy (whom I woudn't even call his girlfriend if I think about it for a while).

In a way it is psychologically adequate. Once you have taken a role, by putting on mask and costume, you gain great amount of self confidence and become more able. Ok, it has it's restrictions, you can't perform difficult stunts without training a lot, of course.

I gotta say... one thing I really liked about the DOUBLE DUCK stories in Kaboom! DONALD DUCK was the fact that Don was a reasonably competent agent. No genius, certainly, but he held his own pretty well. Plus, it was nice to see Kay K used as a pseudo-romantic interest. Paperinik is well-liked, but I find the concept to be somewhat contrived. It's better to see Donald doing well at a task where he can actually still BE Donald.

Well, in the end of a Double Duck episode where Daisy had to take part in the action by accident, she wanted to know everything he had kept secret from her, and he said "I am also Superduck (Paperinik)". Then of course they cleared her memory to keep things going as usual. So, the Italians consider Donald to be both Double Duck and Superduck (Paperinik) at the same time.

I haven't read too much about Duck Avenger/Papernik etc. too much, and I don't know, but it didn't seem like my cup of tea personally from the little bit I read about it. I think a part of it was because super hero vs crime was never a genre I was ever into, a part of it was what Mr. M. was talking about: He became a different character. It is because of his short-comings such as his temper and his, well, bad-luck that adds charm to him as a character in my opinion. This throws most of that out the window, and regular Donald seems to wander off somewhere (until he takes off his mask anyway)
However, this is just my initial reaction to the whole thing. When I spot one, I'll read more stories of it to make a more informed decision on that. This is also just the average comics; I've never read the new adventure ones.
By the way, PK (which he was referred to as that, even though it was in English) had his own game on the PS2 I remember. I have it, but for one reason or another I never got around to playing it so I have no idea whether or not it's good or what you do exactly. But it does exist.
