So, I want to write a fan letter to Paul Halas. Does anyone know an address (electronic or land-based) that would get such a letter to him eventually?
I already liked "Billyum" a lot, from David Gerstein's Magica hardcover (I got the German version), and I enjoyed "The Magic Flute" (Vicar) and two of the stories he did with Rota: "The Incredible Shrinking Duck," which is just terrific, and "Rugged Island," which is lots of fun. But now I have read "Bananas" (script by Dave Angus, art by Branca) and I have moved into serious fangirl territory. The hero of Bananas is Grandma Duck, and this is a Grandma Duck more adventurous and bad*ss than you have ever seen her...while yet (and this is what's really impressive!) being entirely consistent as a character with the Grandma Duck we have always known. She's an independent-minded, self-sufficient, practical pioneer type, and she has very strong commitment to family and she loves to cook/bake and is very good at it. She also instigates a trip into the wilds, where she beats off crocodiles and saves the day with a well-aimed burning arrow. In short, this story is a dream come true for a feminist duckfan.
The script does seem to assume Grandma Duck and Uncle Scrooge are blood-relatives, which I naturally do not, being committed to the Barks/Rosa duck family tree. But that's not at all essential to the story, and didn't interfere with my enjoyment of it. Wish I could go back in time and give this story to my 8-year-old self, who was stuck reading the sexist dreck published in duck comics in the 1960's. (It was almost always better if the story *didn't* have female characters, since they were treated so stereotypically. Thank goodness for John Stanley's Little Lulu!) Also wish I could look forward to this story being published in English soon! Sigh.
