Hey, does anyone want a Fethry valentine card? (Just the little type that kids give each other.) I just ran across one on Etsy. If you go to Etsy.com and put "disney valentine card" in the search engine (after specifying "vintage", not "handmade"), you'll find it--it's in one of the sets of three with Goofy in the middle. Just thought someone on this forum might want it--since you're the only Americans who actually know who Fethry is!

Thanks VERY much! I've just purchased the card; and once I've got it, I'll make a hi-res version available to anyone else who'd like a better quality version of the image.

David, I am *so* pleased that you were glad to get this, and that I was able to give you this tiny gift in return for all you have given and continue to give all of us! Now, the question is, how in hell did Fethry end up on an American kids' valentine (I presume it was sold in the US)? It doesn't seem as though he had enough of a presence in American comics to warrant this honor.
I would have bought the valentine for myself, if it had included Tabby making a sardonic comment...

How did Fethry end up on that valentine? Think of it this way: he was an American Disney Studio creation born in Los Angeles. Disney used him constantly in its S-coded stories; Disney actively encouraged every domestic and foreign publishing licensee to use him??and as part of that effort, they included him in the 1972 publications styleguide along with Mickey, Donald, Scrooge and the gang. This styleguide held sway through at least the mid-1980s, and the model sheets associated with it drifted into use with other types of merchandise as well.
The hitch was only that Western Publishing, the major comics licensee, didn't use him, so his most important domestic venue was simply cut off. It's that simple.
Some merchandising licensees, encountering Fethry among the model sheets, evidently didn't know anything about Disney comics, so simply presumed Fethry must be as well-known as any other character in the group. So he was casually tossed onto their products as well.
