Mark Sonntag's great blog TAGTOONZ has recently featured two color Sunday strips featuring José Carioca!

The examples you published were drawn by Bob Grant and Karl Karpé [April 4, 1943] and Paul Murry and Dick Moores [April 25, 1943].

The José Sunday strip succeeded the Silly Symphonies Sunday; it was later replaced by a Panchito strip, which was itself then replaced with Uncle Remus (so you can see how this worked in succession).

Only a couple isolated Sundays from the José series have been reprinted in modern US comics, but they're incredibly popular in Brazil, where local Disney cartoonists followed up on the Sundays' continuity and cast of characters when starting their own José series (which continues today)."

I really enjoy Paul Murry's early work, it's full of strong poses, very fluid and energetic... his early Mickey Mouse comic book work really shows this off too.

We'd all love to see quality collections of the non-Mickey and Donald Walt Disney Sunday newspaper strips, such as Silly Symphonies, José Carioca, Panchito, Uncle Remus, Scamp, and Walt Disney Animated Feature adaptions. A perfect answer for classic Disney comic reprints that haven't been reprinted! Though some publishers might consider these as fodder for an oddball collection, they'd be a great launch of classic Disney reprints in a digital book/download format... newspaper strips would work perfectly on a tablet in the "landscape" position, and we can tap to zoom into single panels. * just no sound effects, please *

José is also very popular in The Netherlands. I'd buy hardbound collections of "Silly Symphonies", José Carioca, Panchito, Uncle Remus, Scamp and the Features. That might make a couple nice books. I'd also buy a "Donald Duck" (Taliaferro) series. IF they would be relatively cheap, like the Barks and Gottfredson sets.
I have a set of Italian oversized slick full page Sundays, with José Carioca, Panchito, Uncle Remus, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. I can understand the Italian fairly well, because I can read Spanish. Still, I'd rather have a nice hardbound set in either English or Dutch. I have many of those strips scattered in different Dutch books, and also the English hardbound Abbeville "Silly Symphonies and Features" book (reprint of Italian Mondadori book). But, I'd like to have them all together in the same format.

I sooooo hope that Joe Carioca Comics come to The States...just 'cause of the big Hispanic population in the U.S. (I hear that Joe Carioca is popular in other countries there besides Brazil).

He is moderately popular in other Latin American countries and very popular in Netherlands and Portugal. Other countries, like Italy, only sporadically printed his comics.

Well, Jose might be popular in the Netherlands, but that's a different Joe than the Ze from Brasil. Ze Carioca (the Brazilian version) is more or less like Donald, while Joe Carioca (the Dutch version) lives on the garbage belt and chases after every girl in South America.

They have much in common. Both versions chase girls actually, the Brazilian one not so openly because of his official relationship with Rosinha, both have their "Jeitinho". I consider the differences to be subtle. Sometimes these differences are more to the fore, still I see no reasons to consider them completely different characters.
Btw, Ze is my favourite Disney character.
