Over at www.newsarama.com there is an overview of Joe Quesada's (Marvel's big guy) talk at the Disney D23 convention yesterday.
Disney comics are mentioned 3 times and I will quote the relevent parts now:
1. Fan asks about the future of Marvel publishing Disney comics. "BOOM! Studios has a license to do those books, and those licenses are controlled by Disney, so where they end up is really up to Disney," Quesada said, adding that they are putting out some Disney titles. "We take these things as they come."
2. A fan says it'd be a shame to lose the current Darkwing Duck comic book creative team. Quesada: "I don't think there are any plans for Darkwing in the Marvel Universe. Wherever it's being published is probably where it'll stay."
3. Another fan asks about the status of Disney comics, specifically asking if Marvel will take up publishing Uncle Scrooge comics. Quesada: "I'll be honest with you, I don't know. That doesn't mean it won't happen in the future, but I have not heard anything about it.
Well the good news as I see it is that there was interest at the convention about Disney comics. The bad news is that either Quesada is playing dumb, or truly has no idea about what Disney's plans (if any) are for Disney comics. He even seems to think that Boom *still* has the license for the books! If he truly has no info on Disney comics, it certainly seems the case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing in the big Disney empire...
I was truly hoping that there would have been an announcement about Disney comics yesterday as a huge group of Disney fans would seem to be a perfect place to make it. I guess we will just have to wait some more.

Lars, well I wouldn't really compare Lasseter and Quesada as Pixar makes movies and Marvel makes comics! :) Of course you make a good point in that if Disney is not telling anything to Quesada or anyone else at Marvel, how would he know.
While I understand why Disney let Fantagraphics make the Gottfredson and Barks libraries, I just can't see how Disney would give the standard comic book license to anyone but Marvel (for good or bad). Wouldn't it kind of be a slap in the face to Marvel for someone else to publish Disney comics? Unless of course Marvel has told Disney they do *not* want it? Just idle speculation from me not to be taken as more than that.

I think it's just too early. Nothing has probably been decided neither at Marvel nor Disney.

In any case, he doesn't seem to not know anything about it. I'm not even sure he knows that Darkwing Duck is a Disney licence, or else why would he say "Wherever it's being published"?
And he's right, currently Boom! Studios STILL has the licence, and they do until october.

We'll just need to wait a little more. But I really don't see Disney not even trying to do something with their licence, especially now that they own Marvel.

Err?... What's the point of buying a company billions of dollars, if you can't make them do the projects you want? It's not like anyone wants Marvel to stop their other projects; just to add some more.
And maybe I'm biased, but who WOULDN'T want to work on a project with famous Disney characters?
And Marvel is already doing Pixar and Muppets books...
He also added "We take these things as they come." so they obviously aren't against it.

If Marvel Comics are so unwilling to publish Standard Character comics that a (possibly high-ranking) Disney executive has to order them to do so, you have a potential disaster on your hands.

But that was just speculation on my part... We don't know what Marvel Comics people might think of the idea of publishing Standard Characters.

Sadly, I've encountered several comics people who turn their noses up at the mere mention of Disney comics.

Good to hear Marvel doesn't go as over the top with it as Boom! did.
Boom, 2008: "WE'RE GONNA PUBLISH THE BEST COMICS EVER! :D" (cue fail)
Marvel, 2011: "We don't know yet if we're going to publish them. :/" (cue... what, actually?)

Thanks Aaron, that's clears a heck of lot up in terms of the D23 reactions. Hopefully Disney Publishing gets on it in full force and we can get back to reading.....

So in the end, the creative development could end up either at Disney OR Marvel? But the books would get published by Marvel?

Either way, as long as the Disney classics and Disney Afternoon titles continue...I'll be happy.
I just want to see the Duck Comics that weren't published in the states...published...and in English!
