Twenty years ago on this date the first issue of the Bulgarian "Mickey Mouse" magazine came out.

Along with this magazine, the Bulgarian branch of Egmont was founded as well. While only a few short Don Rosa stories appeared in 'Mickey Mouse' during the 1990s (probably because of its size of 32 pages), there were a lot of Carl Barks 10-page stories, and I could tell they were different from everything else (well, the story code gave me a clue too ;)). MM became weekly in 1999 and at one point got as big as 40 pages, but was recently pushed back to 32 (covers included), because of, in Egmont's words, high printing costs.

Egmont also made pocket-sized books for 3-tier stories starting in 1992, including the thicker 256-page "Macrocomics", but these were canceled in 1995. Fortunately, they restarted the "Macrocomics" series in 2010 and once they found a translator from Italian, the Topolino stories (some of my favorite) appeared again, after a 15-year absence. Sadly, the new books were only 196 pages, and this year they dropped down to 192.

Next week Egmont will publish a special issue to commemorate the aniversary, which will include some historical material and other special features. I hope the rising prices don't affect the magazine too badly, so that it can continue being published in the years to come.

P.S. Very soon I should be able to index a few more issues. Happy Easter!

Interesting stuff. I like learning about Disney comics in marginal (from the Disney empire's point of view) markets. Cheers.

Next year the Dutch DD weekly celebrates its 60th anniversary! It's one of the few "true weeklies" from the 1950s. By that I mean that it's one of a few weeklies that have been weekly since its beginning, unlike the Scandinavian issues. I think that the only weekly beating ours is the one from France, beating the Dutch by a few months. I don't know, however, if there was a week in France without a Journal de Mickey. If so, the Dutch Donald Duck is truly the one and only, genuine, original, oldest continuously published weekly Disney magazine.

There has been double issues of the French weekly (1 issue with about twice more pages replacing 2 issues) for some time now, most often published before and after summer vacations.
There was a strike also, sometimes in the 1970s (look for issues 1256bis and 1256ter).

There was BTW a second weekly published between 1949 and 1953, whereas the current one started in 1952. So for one year there were two Disney weeklies in France.

Polish weekly (Kaczor Donald) is the oldest Disney's weekly in the former communist countries, is published every week since 1997, at the moment there were 805 numbers. In addition, it has 48 pages, including about 35 pages of comic. By this I question whether the latest issue of the Bulgarian "Mickey Mouse" has a higher or lower number than the latest number of the Polish weekly.

I'm not sure I'm following you.

This scan seems to suggest the oldest KD issue is from 1994:

#1 MM Bulgarian issue is from 1990.

BTW it seems there were some Disney strips in Tito's ex-Yugoslavia.

Bulgarski "Mickey Mouse" is published weekly since 1999 (previously was a bi-weekly), the Polish "Donald Duck" is published weekly from mid-1997 (previously it was a bi-weekly).

OK, I got it...
Do you know if there was there any Disney comics in communist Poland? or in any other communist country beside Yugoslavia?
Scarpomaniak
In Poland, the single appeared in cartoons in newspapers. But Disney's first weekly magazine published in Poland shortly before World War II at the beginning of 1939.

http://coa.inducks.org/publication.php?c=pl/GM

But the first magazine published in Yugoslavia in 1936 and second in .

http://coa.inducks.org/publication.php?c=yu/MM

But Polish weekky that appeared before World War II, and to Yugoslavia in which he was communism, but other than that in Poland and other countries dependent on the Soviet Union. In Yugoslavia, could be issued in magazines such as these:

http://coa.inducks.org/publication.php?c=yu/MZS
And in Poland, no.

Even so, Polish "Donald Duck" can be called the oldest Disney weekly in the former communist countries, which it now shows up.

Very interesting! While I don't have enough a lot of information about Disney comics (or even films) in Bulgaria before the war, one magazine from 1988 reprinted an old story (http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=ZM+39-02-05 ) which was first published in 1941 in the "Wonderful World" (?Ñ???? Ñ ?Ñ Ñ?) newspaper. This publication has several issues, as far as I could see in the National Library's registers, but I can't say if more of them had MM strips (it's very likely, though). In the reprint they altered the text to remove the old ortography. I hope I can find a way to look into these things some day...
As for the publication frequency, Bulgarian MM was monthly around 1992-1993 and in late 1993 it became biweekly, with 24 issues per year. Donald Duck (1992-1995) I think was bimonthly (?), while Macrocomics (1993/4-1995) had an irregular schedule, and after its reintroduction in 2010 it has 6 issues per year.

Another birthday this week! :D The German "Micky Maus" is celebrating 60 years, and I'm sure our German members have something to say about that. I'd like to hear something about it at least.
Next milestone is 60 years of the French "Le Journal de Mickey" in April 2012, if I'm correct.

Finnish Aku Ankka is havin it's 60 th b-day december 5th 2011. It's Walt's birthday also!
