Anyone going to the San Diego Comic Con (July 20-24, 2011)?

Perhaps Fantagraphics shows a first impression of the Carl Barks collection?
IDW will show Barks?? Barney Bear book.
And BOOM annonces "BOOM 3.0 - the classics are really back" ;)

Ah ah, good one ;)
I heard Marvel is not at Comic Con, so I guess there won't be any announcement (if the switch to Marvel is true, of course) It's probably way too early anyway.

Marvel (Entertainment LLC?) is listed on the official website as a exhibitor: http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_exhib_1.php

The only Disney artist I saw listed in "Artists' Alley (exhibits and art for sale) was Pat Block.
Gerd Syllwasschy
John Lustig (okay, he is not an artist) will be there too: Booth #2302, near the main entrance. Say howdy to him for me if you meet him!

Shelly Block (writer) will be there, as well (along with Pat).

Since it's thousands of miles out of my reach, is there anyone of us who has been there?

I was there in 1995. I'm never in USA in summer, so I had never attended before or again. That year I was in L.A. , so I decided to go to The ComicCon. I saw an old friend, Daan Jippes, and got to meet Pat and Shelly Block, and Don Rosa for the first time. I think I also saw Byron Erickson there, but I might be only remembering seeing him just weeks before in the Egmont offices in Denmark. Kim Thompson of Fantagraphics was also there. I had met him previously through Freddy Milton. His Fantagraphics had published Freddy's "Familien Gnuff" series in their "Critters" comic book series. I think I remember also seeing Dave Rawson and Pat McGreal, John Clark and Gary Leach. I think that Janet and Michael Gilbert were also there.

At The ComicCon I also met several long-time American Disney Comics collectors, whose names I had seen much, but had never met in person. They are the people that wrote the fan letters printed in the Gladstone and Disney 1980s-1990s books. There were many independent comics creators and big US comics company artists with their own booths, signing autographed drawings and autographing books. There were lots of booths selling comics and cartoon memorobilia and new and used comic books. They had panel discussions with industry production people, creators and fans in the audience. Unfortunately, Carl Barks was not there.

On Saturday evening there was a big party with Disney Comics fans and industry people, and two of the New Yorkers (Joe Torcivia) invited me to crash in their hotel room so I could stay for the whole party and the continued festivities on Sunday. I stayed at the party until about a half hour past midnight. Then, unbelievably, I decided to leave and just go home to Los Angeles (I don't know why). I was now too late for the train to L.A., and so, had to take an express bus (coach). arrived in Downtown L.A. at 4:00 in the morning, and had to walk through the deadly Skid Row area from The Central Bus Station to where I could get a local bus home. I arrived home and found a message on my telephone from the day before, that I had to fly to Zurich, Switzerland, only 2 hours from then, to draw Disney drawings, as an emergency fill-in for a Disney Comics artist(who had to cancel only one day before), for the opening of a book store in a new shopping mall. I barely made the flight. I didn't return for some months. So, it was just by a coincidence and dumb luck, that I managed to ever go to The Comic Con.

In terms of size, I can't remember so well, but I think it was a little bit bigger than the old "Stripdagen" in The Netherlands and also most of the other "beurzen" there. I think it was also bigger than most of the comic book fairs I attended in Denmark.

But, I'm sure there are several Americans (and even "foreigners") on this forum, who have attended The San Diego ComiCon many times, and also, a lot more recently-who can tell us what it has been like recently.

Well, as far as I know, it's not only for comics anymore. Other media come there also now, when they want to announce something. But that's all I know.

Many dealers and insiders have advised that SDCC has been moving away from comic books in general or at least away from the focus on print comics outside of high end books and the hot item of the year related to comics. Over the last 5 or so years, SDCC has mainly centered around media, film, new toys and celebrity exposure. While this is a great thing for comic book and science fiction-like movies in connection with their origins from print, it is a negative for old fashioned print media turning the country's once-largest comic book convention into another gaudy, slathered red carpet celebrity extravaganza. Many dealers have stated the actual selling section of comic books at this convention has progressively decreased over the last few years. It is what it will be I suppose....
I have seen a picture online of Don Rosa shopping at this year's SDCC; so there was at least one great duck man there.

I went last year, and only because working on Transformers comics alleviated the outrageous hassle and expense of getting passes. The amount of space given to actual comics was indeed disappointing, but I did have a good time overall (since conventions are the best way to meet up with all of one's friends and collaborators in comics).
Got to spend a little time with Don Rosa as well, which was definitely a highlight. Didn't think I'd ever get the chance to meet him otherwise.
And another interesting tidbit from the same trip, my fiance's family lives in SoCal, and it turns out her great-Uncle is Ron Leonard, one of the first Duckfans who sought Barks out (with John and Bill Spicer) in the 60s! He showed me a lot of cool stuff, like correspondence with Barks about "Billions in the Hole" story ideas, and he's also got the original art for the missing panels from "Land Beneath the Ground"! Man, what a small world.

I am hoping to go next year. Every year it seems something comes up. Darn the luck, this year we were too close to the birth of our first child. Darn the luck =)
