Disney comics are mentioned in this article on Cracked.com as one of 7 things from America that are insanely popular overseas:

What the author doesn't realise is that all these "obscure" characters appear in European comics only because they first appeared in stories from the US in the 1940s and 1950s. If he wants something truly European though, he should have gone for Paperinik/Superduck/Duck Avenger/Whatever his name is, or Indiana Goof, for example.
The amazing thing is the huge developpment these characters have gone through since their first cartoons. I still hope they release Song of the South in here some day.

It is disturbing that the big Disney comic book continent got so quickly forgotten in the U.S. after it sank into the depth. After all Walt Disney 's Comics & Stories was in America the best-selling comic book of all time in its high era. But it seems that it has not even left behind a myth.

I think people got caught up in sex, violence and super heroes here in the states. Additionally, Disney hasn't exactly thrown their support behind a lot of Disney comics. They have the money and the resources to push any product they want to. Comics just don't seem to have a champion in the Disney company at this point. There are many ways they could generate interest, but they haven't done it yet.
