In my Interview to him, Stefan Petrucha told me that when he went to Egmont, his editors told him "he's not dumb, but he just thinks differently from everyone else." and Stefan defines him as a "hoot"...
What did Petrucha mean with the word "hoot"?
Furthermore, Petrucha says that Fethry is like a Goofy with a "political agenda"...
What does a "political agenda" be?
Thank you very much,
Simone

Are you referring to Fethry or Stefan described as being a 'hoot'? A hoot means being funny or fun or exciting. Don't know about a 'political agenda.' I'm not that familiar with Fethry and his politics.

I suppose the "political agenda" refers to the original Fethry as conceived by Kinney and Hubbard. He always had some idée fixe which he propagated with missionary zeal.

Yes, Fethry as an evangelist (non-religious) buttinski, whose idées fixe get his "victims" (Donald, Scrooge) into a lot of trouble is a far stronger character than simply the disaster-causing idiot he became in stories by later writers and artists. I would have liked to have seen such a character used by Barks or Jippes in Barks'-style stories. I wrote a couple stories using Fethry in that style, but, on the first one, Dutch Disney editors told me to take Fethry out (e.g. replace his part with another character), and the same plot might be accepted. If I remember correctly, I DID sell the story, with Donald taking Fethry's part, and Scrooge taking Donald's "victim's" role (not sure). I believe their policy is to not accept new stories with Fethry. I believe that he could be a very good character, but, because he was used a lot in a weak way, he has dropped out of favour in the eyes of many fans and editors. Moby Duck, on the other hand, was a total waste in my opinion. Lots of cameo characters by Barks would have been better candidates for development and continued use.
I also think that Ludwig Von Drake should have been developed more (as a blowhard conceited egotistical academician), who would be very different from the shy, humble inventor, Gyro Gearloose. LVD could be more an irritant, such as Fethry, than an inventor. IF he's ever used for his knowledge, it should be more of an "expert", rather than someone who will make a machine to get the heroes out of trouble, or get heroes something impossible that they want.

If you only use the original idea for Fethry, the story ideas get very limited. I think this "character development" worked out pretty well. Now there's one chaotic character, with Donald being the (actual!) wise guy.

You know, I'm thinking of using them (Gyro and Ludwig) working toghether. But, as far as now, I haven't been able to work a story around it. I am using Ludwig on his own now, I had an idea using storyboard sketches. I should look like one of those 1960s educational cartoons (storyboadrs only). Only I'm putting to much of "me" in it, which is not good for the atmosphere of the cartoon. I already used the names Agent 00-Platypus and Indiana Goofy. I was planning on using the actual names (the Bond franchise was already popular back then, and Indiana Jones would be about 60 years old if he would be real in that time), but changed it because Disney wouldn't do it if it was a real 1960s cartoon.
It's about Ludwig learning kids about science... and everything goes horribly wrong. Includes Donald Duck, Jiminy Cricket (the I'm No Fool cartoons) and... J. Jones! And it all works out. I'll show it when it's finished sometime.

There was an early '60s very late Dell Donald Duck issue lead story that featured both Gyro and Ludwig as heavily important secondary characters (almost co-leading with Donald). It worked fine. They had different enough roles. I can't remember the exact issue, but it must have been around #84 or 85.

I really wish that editors did not have a biased slant towards using Ludwig simply because Gyro exists. It's an incredibly stupid and archaic rule IMO and a waste of a character that could fill great potential where another one wouldn't quite work. I do understand people writing characters the wrong way and as a result misusing them tremendously (this was the case with Fethry for many, many years) but if the editor knows the character and trusts that the character can add a new slant and be funny and worthwhile in stories, then I don't see the problem of using said character when necessary and pertinent (and most of all in terms of making the story fun!)
