I recall reading that Bongo Comics had once approached Rosa to do comics for them, but he declined because he only wanted to work with Barks' Ducks. The impression I got was that this offer occurred shortly after Rosa decided to retire from doing Disney work. I'd be curious to know more details about the context in which this possibility was discussed. Does anyone know who initiated it, how the idea was pitched, and how far the negotiations went?
Rosa-created Simpsons comics ... the very concept is mind-boggling.

The "Uncle Burn$" story was written by Ian Boothby and featured the Simpsons and Mr. Burns searching for gold in the South Seas. Among the locales are "Donrosa Island" and the "Gottfredson Trench." The story was an obvious homage to Carl Barks' adventure tales---Burns is even dressed like Uncle Scrooge!---but I have never heard that Bongo ever tried to get Don Rosa. He drew cartoons for the University of Kentucky school newspaper and the Louisville Times and in 1986 got approval from Gladstone comics publisher Bruce Hamilton to draw an Uncle Scrooge story. The Son Of The Sun was published in Uncle Scrooge #102 in 1987, beginning Rosa's long history with Disney. The Barks tribute story appeared in the same-numbered issue of The Simpsons. Coincidence? I think not!

Googling doesn't provide a whole lot of information. Apparently he revealed this in response to a general question asked by a fan on the internet, presumably in 2004. I don't have the original citation, but here is what appears to be a snippet of that conversation:

Q: Don, has there ever been a moment in your career where you??d have prefered to give up everything in order to do something else?

A: I did that in 1986 when I gave up my engineering career to start writing/drawing Barks-Duck comics! Or do refer to the past 18 years of that new career? I think I??d either retire and just start selling off my comic collection for living expenses, or I might accept a long-standing offer from Bongo Comics to start doing Simpsons comics. The Bongo comics sell best in Europe, and maybe they??ll like having my name in them?
