I don't know whether this link works, but it's from Thomas Andrae's "Carl Barks and the Disney Comic Books - Unmasking the Myth of Modernity" page 229, chapter 7. The postmodern crack-up.

Barks told me those same things several times. He seemed to be very serious and truthful about that fact. And, it seems to be borne out in the quality of his work. So why should we not take him on his word?

Where from did you get that date of 1961 anyway? I have read several Barks letters to his fans in which he bemoaned his lack of inspiration, but all of them predated the creation of Magica, if I remember correctly. "Island in the Sky" was the one story from that period that stood out to him and he was proud of. More than anything else the burnout must have been a case of excessive labour - remember all the stories with Grandma, Daisy and Gyro he had to draw at the time.
