John Byrne uudisti Teräsmiestä viisiosaisella The Man of Steel -minisarjalla (Oct-Dec 1986), ja jatkoi sen jälkeen uudessa Superman-lehdessä suoraan siitä mihin oli minisarjan lopussa jäänyt. Byrne kirjoitti ja piirsi (lähes kaikki) Supermanin ensimmäiset 22 numeroa. Sen jälkeen lehdestä vastasivat mm. Roger Stern, Kerry Gammill ja Jerry Ordway.
