McDuck's early life. I think the Swedish translator has already
translated some parts of it, so it won't be too long before we see
them here.

Funny. I was just about to ask 2 questions about Rosa. The first about a Super
Snooper followup: in Holland, I saw an ad for next month's issue of 'DD Extra'
with such a story. Since it is a Barks followup, it had to be a Rosa story...
(when will Rosa stop writing followups?)
The story will be published here in october.
The second question was about Scrooge's youth. I sent your message about
Rosa working on Scrooge's youth to my Dutch pen pal Daniel van Eijmeren
months ago. It also mentioned that Rosa let Scrooge and Magica de Spell meet
long before they really met.
Daniel now replied to me that he didn't like the idea, and even doesn't like
Magica at all (well, there are a few good stories with her, but overall, we
could do without her). (Note: this is Daniels opinion, not mine.)
Since your message was a few months old, I wondered if it was still accurate.
Now I know the answer. I can't wait to see the result.

Remember the end of Micro-Ducks From Outer Space, where the
micro-ducks set off for their home planet, and promise to return in
eight years? That story was published 1968 in Scandinavia, and
someone must have remembered it, because there was a Gutenberghus
story (story by Gutenberghus-knows-who, art by Vicar) where they *did*
return -- D 3829. Unfortunately it wasn't published until 1977 (KA
31/77 in Sweden).
As to the series on Scrooge's youth I don't know much about it, but I
think some of the silent lurkers on this list have read the synopses
to them -- care to share some interesting tidbits of information with
us?

Woodchuck's Guide (term?). The nephews try to find out who _wrote_ it...

One week ago, the Dutch "complete works of Carl Barks" was issued. 17 books,
black and white, Dutch translation of all Barks stories (except when he did
only the script. The script-only stories will be saved for book 18, that may
appear in 2 years, when and if Daan Jippes has inked them).
Actually, the title of the series is "Donald Duck - Alle Klassieke Verhalen"
("All classic stories"). The price is about 1/4 of the 1990 price of the CBL.
I helped to make sure that *all* Barks material was reprinted. Most of the
covers, sketches, model sheets etc. are copied from The Carl Barks Library.
One cover sketch could not be found in the Library. It is a pencil drawing that
Barks identified as "Hammocks" (Donald and the nephews are hanging one
above another in hammocks).
Dutch editor Thom Roep had an inked version of this cover, inked by Ulrich
Schro"der. He said he didn't have the original Barks pencil. So, the inked
version is published in the 17-books-series.
I would like to have (a copy of) the original Barks pencil drawing.
So, question: does anyone know if that drawing is published somewhere, possibly
in a Scandinavian or German Donaldistic magazine?
(if so, how could I get a copy?)

Hmm... This sounds like as bit of a license on the part of the Dutch
translator. It should have taken them four years just to get back to
Micro with their old ship. I guess these new faster ships must have
met them on their way home and docked with them. :-)

Sounds interesting, but I always figured there wasn't one person who
wrote it, but rather that it was a collaborative work by woodchucks
all over the world. There is some Barks story where HDL try to look
something up, and don't find it in the Guidebook. They say "that
means that noone every knew about it" or words to that effect, and
later add that they will mention this to their superior so that it can
be added to later editions of the Guidebook. Do I remember this
right? I can't remember what story it was, so I can't check it.

The question on who's who of Huey, Dewey and Louie came up in

Of course *everything* about them "fully depend on" the different
artists, including their looks, their clothes, their lines and their
personalities.
The problem with the colouring in the comics is that it's so
inconsistent. Maybe the nephews exchange their caps between panels,
but even that won't explain the whole of it, as they sometimes
exchange colours when they are apart from each other. 8-)
The colouring in the animated shorts have always been better, but the
red-blue-green thing was invented in comics, so you won't find it in
the classical cartoons. Instead they wore different colours in
different cartoons, very often red. In their first cartoon ("Donald's
Nephews") they wore red, orange and green. In DuckTales they are
consistent about it, as Steven P. Calica <spc55721 at uxa.cso.uiuc.edu>
already has pointed out: Huey red, Dewey blue, and Louie green.
Different character or not? Of course they are *supposed* to be
exactly like one another, but if you look through several episodes
where they do different things and you know which one does what, maybe
you could find some unintentional (on the part of the writers)
different character traits anyway?
This is what Dan Haley tried to do in "A Who's Who of Huey, Dewey &
Louie" published in the fanzine The Barks Collector #11 (1979). He
doesn't only use those situations where one of the boys is explicitly
named, but all of that story as well, as he assumes that they wear the
same colours throughout a story at least. I wouldn't trust the
colourists that much...
When he initially looked through his Barks collection to find
instances where a nephew with a cap or outfits of some particular
colour was named, he found the following:
Huey Dewey Louie
Red 5 6 8
Green 5 4 6
Blue 1 8 3
(He only used stories by Carl Barks, but of course Unca Carl didn't
colour his stories himself.)

Maybe, but I'm not totally convinced. It wouldn't surprise me if at
least some of the colourists had their opinions on what colours the
boys wear, and it would be very easy to follow that opinion in the
sweater example. I guess the problem for the colourists was that they
didn't have the time to actually read the stories, and you had to do
that to keep track of the boys. I'd like more data on the colouring
in scenes such as the sweaters episode Rich mentioned where the
colourists are bound to have noticed which boy the gave which colour.

artists, including their looks, their clothes, their lines and their
personalities.
The problem with the colouring in the comics is that it's so
inconsistent. Maybe the nephews exchange their caps between panels,
but even that won't explain the whole of it, as they sometimes
exchange colours when they are apart from each other. 8-)
The colouring in the animated shorts have always been better, but the
red-blue-green thing was invented in comics, so you won't find it in
the classical cartoons. Instead they wore different colours in
different cartoons, very often red. In their first cartoon ("Donald's
Nephews") they wore red, orange and green. In DuckTales they are
consistent about it, as Steven P. Calica <spc55721 at uxa.cso.uiuc.edu>
already has pointed out: Huey red, Dewey blue, and Louie green.
Different character or not? Of course they are *supposed* to be
exactly like one another, but if you look through several episodes
where they do different things and you know which one does what, maybe
you could find some unintentional (on the part of the writers)
different character traits anyway?
This is what Dan Haley tried to do in "A Who's Who of Huey, Dewey &
Louie" published in the fanzine The Barks Collector #11 (1979). He
doesn't only use those situations where one of the boys is explicitly
named, but all of that story as well, as he assumes that they wear the
same colours throughout a story at least. I wouldn't trust the
colourists that much...
When he initially looked through his Barks collection to find
instances where a nephew with a cap or outfits of some particular
colour was named, he found the following:
Huey Dewey Louie
Red 5 6 8
Green 5 4 6
Blue 1 8 3
(He only used stories by Carl Barks, but of course Unca Carl didn't
colour his stories himself.)

Maybe, but I'm not totally convinced. It wouldn't surprise me if at
least some of the colourists had their opinions on what colours the
boys wear, and it would be very easy to follow that opinion in the
sweater example. I guess the problem for the colourists was that they
didn't have the time to actually read the stories, and you had to do
that to keep track of the boys. I'd like more data on the colouring
in scenes such as the sweaters episode Rich mentioned where the
colourists are bound to have noticed which boy the gave which colour.

This listing is a fairly exhaustive compilation of current and recent, new and
some old Disney Characters based on the "mainstream" characters (i.e. Mickey,

TROOP seems to be Goofy is a single father raising his son Max. GOOF TROOP
picks up on the long-standing fued between Goofy & Bad Pete. Pete is married
and he & his wife, Peg have two children P.J. and Pistol. Max & P.J. are
best friends, and Max is a little uneasy about being known as Goofy Junior.
Traditionally Goofy has always lived in the same hometown as Mickey, but
according to the new series Goofy has moved to Spoonerville.

3) Characters should not be included just because they are someone's favorite
if they have had only one appearance and then are forgotten.
