There is another Swedish Barks index, primarily sorted on Swedish
publication, printed by NAFS(k) as NAFS(k)uriren #5. The reason I
missed the 1987 reprint of WDC 174 was because I used an *old*
machine-readable version of that index. I've put that index on
ftp.lysator.liu.se (in pub/comics/disney/swedish/) now, but I would
really like an updated version of it instead. Greger? Johan? Could
you please supply me with one?

In Holland, they even start to reprint Barks stories for the 2nd time...
almost all Barks stories have been reprinted here at least once.

This is not quite the same in Holland. The old issues have terrible
colours and machine lettering. And they are translated from the German,
so some original textual gags are lost. I alsmost always prefer the reprint
version, translated, coloured and lettered by a staff that knew who
Barks was.

After reading in the ftp'able Don Rosa index that DR had written a story
called "Back in Time for a Dime!" I immediately rushed to my favourite
comics-store and searched through their issues of DuckTales...
The nearest I got was a story call "In time for a Dime" (or something like
that), anyway the story is spread over two issues (and not 4 pages as the
index suggests!) and Don Rosa wasn't listed in the credits!!!
This story appeared around the September issue of '91 or '92...
In other words the index seems to contain an error (if you have any proof
that Rosa should have done a story for the DuckTales magazine, please inform
me of it ASAP...
BTW: I am currently updating the above-mentioned index, watch this space...

I haven't seen it myself, but I got the information from Swedish
Donaldist Stefan Dios. He has had frequent contact with Don Rosa, so
maybe he got that information from Rosa before the story was printed?
That could explain away any changes in the title and number of pages
if it was changed before publication. I'll look into this later.

I haven't seen it myself, but I got the information from Swedish
Donaldist Stefan Dios. He has had frequent contact with Don Rosa, so
maybe he got that information from Rosa before the story was printed?
That could explain away any changes in the title and number of pages
if it was changed before publication. I'll look into this later.

Neither was Jaime Diaz. I think you are referring to a totally different
story. Per mentioned "DTM", i.e. DuckTales MAGAZINE. I think this is not
quite the same as the DuckTales COMIC (but I may be wrong).
Summarizing the pros and cons:
pro: - The story titles look the same
- They are DuckTales stories
con: - The story titles _are_ different
- Rosa nor Diaz are credited (some other artists are)
- The number of pages is completely different

I got that list and (tried to) read it. It is quite an accurate list, as
far as the American info is concerned. I never thought Swedish was that
easy to read...
But I ran into a few minor errors:
- Oneshot (or Four Color Comic) 291: the cover is NOT by Barks
- BDDUS 1: this cover is NOT by Barks
- Gag US 19b actually didn't appear in US 19 (but you probably know that)
Some "new" Barks work is not listed:
- Both Barks's "Danish" stories, "Go Slowly, Sands Of Time" and "Hang Gliders
be Hanged"
- The covers of CBL-set 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia - "Who killed Donald Duck?" cries the headline of Vreme
magazine. A cover cartoon depcits a pirate ship scoring a direct cannon hit on
Donald's pin-feathers.
The answer - one that many Serbs don't want to face - is that they did
the deed themselves.
Paja Patak (that's Donald Duck in Serbo-Croat) has been yanked from
their country by his creator, Walt Disney Co. [a company is the creator? and
here i thought it was Walt hisself!], which pulled its Mickey Mouse cartoons
and comic books from Belgrade publishers earlier this month in compliance with
American and United Nations sanctions. [Now *THAT'S* punishment.]
A Defiant Attitude
After 18 months of being blamed for much of the ferocious fighting raging across
the former Yugoslavia, many Serbs have developed a defiant attitude toward the
world's wrath. Accusations of atrocities and war crimes committed by Serb
soldiers draw mainly disbelief or scorn. Sanction-induced shortages of gasoline
and heating fuel, and a 6% _daily_ inflation rate, only inspire patriotism.
Threats of Western military intervention stir more bravado.
But Mickey and Donald have accomplished what the world's diplomats have
so far been unable to do: Focus Serbia's attention on the consequences of its
actions. The prospect of life without Paja Patak, Miki Maus and their good
friend Silja - Goofy - has made Serbs flinch and feel alone in the world [!].
In the context of the brutal war, Disney's action may seem to be, well, Mickey
Mouse. But in Serbia, the wound is deep and real.
"We will never be forgiven for chsasing Mickey out!" screams a headline
in NIN magazine.
"For the first time, life under sanctions looks disgusting," laments
Vreme, striking a sarcastic "we-told-you-so" tone. "Yugoslavia is being forced
into a spiritual ghetto." [Gadzooks. Do you suppose Marvel and DC will pull
their product, too? Now _that_ would be a spiritual ghetto!]
Despite the outrage and indignation, of couse, the absence of Donald and
Mickey won't achieve the main goal of the sanctions: the capitulation or ouster
of the current hard-line Serb government.
Unless kids can vote.
Milosevic's Fault
"My mother told me Donald Duck died because of Mr. Milosevic," says 10-year-old
Natasa Tomic, referring to Serbian President Siobodan Milosevic, the man most of
the world blames for propagating the war. "I'm going to miss him," she says -
the cartoon character, that is, and not Mr. Milosevic, who was recently re-
elected by Serbia's adults.
Child psychologists and other academics have entered the debate, warning
about lasting emotional scars and the potential impact on Serbian society. With
Mickey and Donald gone as role models, they worry that children will now have to
get their clues on life from Kninja, a Serbian version of the Ninja Turtles.
Kninja is a camouflage-clad soldier from the Serbian-controlled town of Knin
fighting to seize parts of Croatia.
"Our children, who at bedtime watch horrendous TV pictures from the war,
will be deprived of the few remaining dreams," protests the newspaper Politika,
which had carried Disney's comic strip since 1932. On the day the news of the
Disney ban broke, Politika even ran an obituary of Mickey and Donald. "All
people loved Disney cartoons," the paper mourned.
A Disney spokesman says the only ohter time Disney characters were
banished from a country was when East Germany outlawed Mickey as a symbol of
capitalist imperialism. Here, the characters had over the years worked their
way into the Serbian vernacular. Until the sanctions, Mickey and Donald were a
prominent staple of Belgrade's kiosks, holding their place against the post-
communist proliferation of porn magazines. Belgrade opponents sometimes
acerbically refer to Mr. Milosevic as "Mickey Mouse," picking up the phrase from
Milan Panic, the Serb-born American businessman who unsuccessfully ran for
president last month and who blasted the Milosevic government for its "Mickey
Mouse politics."
Yet the politicians themselves seem just as unhappy as everybody else
about the characters' departure. "by expelling Donald Duck," fumes Ratko
Bozovic, Serbia's culture minister, the U.S. "is starting a war against our
future." [Eh? What's that again?] Meanwhile, novelist Vlada Bulatovic,
writing in Vreme, complains: "America has forced Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse
to be Marines."
The All-American Mouse
The departure of Mickey and Donald has even triggered an animated [I can't
believe they chose that word by accident...] debate about who was better, the
mouse or the duck. It rages on editorial pages and on the streets.
"Compared with the all-American guy Mickey, the 'stupid' duck was always
more dear to our readers," reckons Vreme in a tongue-in-cheek commentary.
"Mickey's attitude was always the American way of life. YUK! But Donald Duck
is different; like all humans he has his vices. He was always more interesting
than the boring old mouse."
Eating popcorn on Belgrade's main shopping street, 13-year-old Andrijana
Abrocic agrees. "I like Donald," shey says. "He's always unhappy and acts more
like real people. Mickey is always successful. I don't like that."
Her friend, 13-year-old Sonja Tomic, votes for Mickey. "He's the best,"
she artues. "He's funny. Minnie, too."
Daddy's No Disney
Mickey and Donald won't totally disappear from Serbia. Politika is talking
about releasing old Disney comic books. Newspaper vendors expect bootleg copies
of Disney comics to be smuggled in from arch-enemy Croatia. And as the price of
the real comics soared with inflation - a monthly Mickey Mouse comic cost $12
before the sanctions - many families began drawing their own anyway.
"It's a shame Donald and Mickey are gone, but the kids still have their
daddy, and he's a good drawer," says Slavka Zekovic, doing her morning shopping
with her two children. Vladimir, 10, and Biljana, 6, look duious.
"The Disney characters are better," says Vladimir.
Back in Burbank, Calif., a spokesman soothes angry Serbian-American
callers by acknowledging that Disney's action is another tragedy of the war.
"We want Mickey to come back as much as they do," says the spokesman.
But that's little consolation to Serbia's children. "By the time the
cartoons come back, I'll be too old for them," muses Miss Abrocic.
Four-year-old Iskra Knezevic, wearing a Mickey and Minnie sweatshirt, is
gobbling down french fries at her other favorite American institution,
McDonald's. (She wanted to have a hamburger too, but sanctions have pushed
prices beyond her mother's budget.) Vera Knezevic says Iskra repeatedly asks
when Mickey and Donald will be back. Mrs. Knezevic tries to explain that the
sanctions won't last forever, but the explanations don't seem to do much good.
"Something she has had for her entire life is suddenly gone," Mrs.
Knezevic says sadly. "After every explanation, she just asks, 'Why?'"

world's wrath. Accusations of atrocities and war crimes committed by Serb
soldiers draw mainly disbelief or scorn. Sanction-induced shortages of gasoline
and heating fuel, and a 6% _daily_ inflation rate, only inspire patriotism.
Threats of Western military intervention stir more bravado.
But Mickey and Donald have accomplished what the world's diplomats have
so far been unable to do: Focus Serbia's attention on the consequences of its
actions. The prospect of life without Paja Patak, Miki Maus and their good
friend Silja - Goofy - has made Serbs flinch and feel alone in the world [!].
In the context of the brutal war, Disney's action may seem to be, well, Mickey
Mouse. But in Serbia, the wound is deep and real.
"We will never be forgiven for chsasing Mickey out!" screams a headline
in NIN magazine.
"For the first time, life under sanctions looks disgusting," laments
Vreme, striking a sarcastic "we-told-you-so" tone. "Yugoslavia is being forced
into a spiritual ghetto." [Gadzooks. Do you suppose Marvel and DC will pull
their product, too? Now _that_ would be a spiritual ghetto!]
Despite the outrage and indignation, of couse, the absence of Donald and
Mickey won't achieve the main goal of the sanctions: the capitulation or ouster
of the current hard-line Serb government.
Unless kids can vote.
Milosevic's Fault
"My mother told me Donald Duck died because of Mr. Milosevic," says 10-year-old
Natasa Tomic, referring to Serbian President Siobodan Milosevic, the man most of
the world blames for propagating the war. "I'm going to miss him," she says -
the cartoon character, that is, and not Mr. Milosevic, who was recently re-
elected by Serbia's adults.
Child psychologists and other academics have entered the debate, warning
about lasting emotional scars and the potential impact on Serbian society. With
Mickey and Donald gone as role models, they worry that children will now have to
get their clues on life from Kninja, a Serbian version of the Ninja Turtles.
Kninja is a camouflage-clad soldier from the Serbian-controlled town of Knin
fighting to seize parts of Croatia.
"Our children, who at bedtime watch horrendous TV pictures from the war,
will be deprived of the few remaining dreams," protests the newspaper Politika,
which had carried Disney's comic strip since 1932. On the day the news of the
Disney ban broke, Politika even ran an obituary of Mickey and Donald. "All
people loved Disney cartoons," the paper mourned.
A Disney spokesman says the only ohter time Disney characters were
banished from a country was when East Germany outlawed Mickey as a symbol of
capitalist imperialism. Here, the characters had over the years worked their
way into the Serbian vernacular. Until the sanctions, Mickey and Donald were a
prominent staple of Belgrade's kiosks, holding their place against the post-
communist proliferation of porn magazines. Belgrade opponents sometimes
acerbically refer to Mr. Milosevic as "Mickey Mouse," picking up the phrase from
Milan Panic, the Serb-born American businessman who unsuccessfully ran for
president last month and who blasted the Milosevic government for its "Mickey
Mouse politics."
Yet the politicians themselves seem just as unhappy as everybody else
about the characters' departure. "by expelling Donald Duck," fumes Ratko
Bozovic, Serbia's culture minister, the U.S. "is starting a war against our
future." [Eh? What's that again?] Meanwhile, novelist Vlada Bulatovic,
writing in Vreme, complains: "America has forced Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse
to be Marines."
The All-American Mouse
The departure of Mickey and Donald has even triggered an animated [I can't
believe they chose that word by accident...] debate about who was better, the
mouse or the duck. It rages on editorial pages and on the streets.
"Compared with the all-American guy Mickey, the 'stupid' duck was always
more dear to our readers," reckons Vreme in a tongue-in-cheek commentary.
"Mickey's attitude was always the American way of life. YUK! But Donald Duck
is different; like all humans he has his vices. He was always more interesting
than the boring old mouse."
Eating popcorn on Belgrade's main shopping street, 13-year-old Andrijana
Abrocic agrees. "I like Donald," shey says. "He's always unhappy and acts more
like real people. Mickey is always successful. I don't like that."
Her friend, 13-year-old Sonja Tomic, votes for Mickey. "He's the best,"
she artues. "He's funny. Minnie, too."
Daddy's No Disney
Mickey and Donald won't totally disappear from Serbia. Politika is talking
about releasing old Disney comic books. Newspaper vendors expect bootleg copies
of Disney comics to be smuggled in from arch-enemy Croatia. And as the price of
the real comics soared with inflation - a monthly Mickey Mouse comic cost $12
before the sanctions - many families began drawing their own anyway.
"It's a shame Donald and Mickey are gone, but the kids still have their
daddy, and he's a good drawer," says Slavka Zekovic, doing her morning shopping
with her two children. Vladimir, 10, and Biljana, 6, look duious.
"The Disney characters are better," says Vladimir.
Back in Burbank, Calif., a spokesman soothes angry Serbian-American
callers by acknowledging that Disney's action is another tragedy of the war.
"We want Mickey to come back as much as they do," says the spokesman.
But that's little consolation to Serbia's children. "By the time the
cartoons come back, I'll be too old for them," muses Miss Abrocic.
Four-year-old Iskra Knezevic, wearing a Mickey and Minnie sweatshirt, is
gobbling down french fries at her other favorite American institution,
McDonald's. (She wanted to have a hamburger too, but sanctions have pushed
prices beyond her mother's budget.) Vera Knezevic says Iskra repeatedly asks
when Mickey and Donald will be back. Mrs. Knezevic tries to explain that the
sanctions won't last forever, but the explanations don't seem to do much good.
"Something she has had for her entire life is suddenly gone," Mrs.
Knezevic says sadly. "After every explanation, she just asks, 'Why?'"

Does the Junior Woodchucks' Scoutmaster have a name? I've seen him appear on
numerous occasion in (especially) Barksian stories, but don't recall ever
seeing his name. I think he's a dognose, too. For those literalists, my
question does indeed imply that I would also like to know *what* that name is.

This listing is a fairly exhaustive compilation of current and recent, new and
some old Disney Characters based on the "mainstream" characters (i.e. Mickey,

include subordinate characters with re-occuring roles. This list is probably
not as complete as I'd like it to be and I welcome any possible suggestions,

from the Disney classic THE JUNGLE BOOK. It seem that the role of Mowgli
has been replaced by Kit since he and Baloo use the familiar affectionate
nicknames of "Lil' Britches" and "Pappa Bear". Wildcat is vaguely Bagdeera.
Rebecca manages an airfreight agency under the name "Higher for Hire" in the
city by the sea, Cape Suzette. Baloo & Kit fly the plane The SeaDuck for the
Agency. Louie the Ape manages a tavern and Shere Kahn is a magnate. With the
addition of Tail Spin to the DTA line in the Fall of 1990 we saw the beginning
of a brand new Disney showcase two hour timeslot appropriately called "The
Disney Afternoon." The first line up consisted of GB/DT/RR/TS/ The tradition
has dictated that each Fall one show would drop from the line up and a new one
would begin. Old DTA programs seem to retire to early Saturday mornings or
the Disney Channel. Subsequent DA line ups have been DT/RR/TS/DW (1991) and
RR/TS/DW/GT (1992), this Fall should be TS/DW/GT/B! followed by DW/GT/B!/AL
in 1994?, and GT/B!/AL/DD in 1995?).

(NOTE: This is the first "spin-off" series, having its roots in DUCKTALES.
Originally it was conceived as a James Bond-type show based on the character
"Double-0 Duck" that appeared in Ducktales, and the plan for Launchpad to move
to the new series was set from the start. Gosalyn has sometimes appeared as
D.W.'s costumed archer sidekick called "QuiverWing Quack", though Launchpad
is his 'official' sidekick. NegaDuck has occasionally lead the archfiend
group called the Fearsome Four consisting of MegaVolt, Bushroot, QuackerJack
and the Liquidator. D.W. is the leader of the superhero group called the
Justice Ducks consisting (on occasion) of Launchpad, Stegmutt, Neptunia,
Morgana and Gizmo-Duck. S.H.U.S.H. once had DW train several agents to be
members of the DarkWing Squad consisting of Darkwing Deer, Darkwing Dodo,
DarkWing Dog and DarkWing Donkey. Steelebeak, Amonia Pine and Ample Grime are
members of the nefarious organization F.O.W.L. whose henchmen are called
Eggmen. Taurus Bulba was 'resurrected' by F.O.W.L. to become the cyborg now
known as the Steerminator. D.W. and the rest are residents of the spralling
metropolis of St. Canard. Darkwing Duck premiered in the Fall of 1991 on DA).

of his career in both animation and comics, only later was it changed to
Goofy. "#" signifies a name which Disney called Goofy in the many shorts
where he portrayed Mr. Average Middle-American Suburbanite. SuperGoof is his
superhero name whenever he wears his red longjohns/blue cape after eating his
Super Goobers <peanuts> he keeps under his hat). The premise of show GOOF
TROOP seems to be Goofy is a single father raising his son Max. GOOF TROOP
picks up on the long-standing fued between Goofy & Bad Pete. Pete is married
and he & his wife, Peg have two children P.J. and Pistol. Max & P.J. are
best friends, and Max is a little uneasy about being known as Goofy Junior.
Traditionally Goofy has always lived in the same hometown as Mickey, but
according to the new series Goofy has moved to Spoonerville. Goof Troop

probably in 1993. In his current run in RAW TOONAGE he occasionally works as

Gosalyn and the cast of Goof Troop(?). It is possible that this show will
be a follow up to Ducktales with Donald returning from the Navy and resuming
his charge of the Nephews. %Concievably there is room to depict the Nephews
interacting with many other (then) teenage versions of Disney's Junior
characters like Morty & Ferdie (Mickey's nephews), Molly (Minnie's niece),
April, May & June (Daisy's nieces), P.J. (Pete's son), Max (Goofy's son),
Newton (Gyro's nephew), Honker & Tank Muddlefoot, Doofus, Bubba Duck and
Webby and many others? Maybe a Disney-style Tiny Toons University?).

3) Characters should not be included just because they are someone's favorite
if they have had only one appearance and then are forgotten.

(NOTES: The main characters of Baloo, Louie and even Shere Kahn originated
from the Disney classic THE JUNGLE BOOK. It seem that the role of Mowgli
has been replaced by Kit since he and Baloo use the familiar affectionate
nicknames of "Lil' Britches" and "Pappa Bear". Wildcat is vaguely Bagdeera.
Rebecca manages an airfreight agency under the name "Higher for Hire" in the
city by the sea, Cape Suzette. Baloo & Kit fly the plane The SeaDuck for the
Agency. Louie the Ape manages a tavern and Shere Kahn is a magnate. With the
addition of Tail Spin to the DTA line in the Fall of 1990 we saw the beginning
of a brand new Disney showcase two hour timeslot appropriately called "The
Disney Afternoon." The first line up consisted of GB/DT/RR/TS/ The tradition
has dictated that each Fall one show would drop from the line up and a new one
would begin. Old DTA programs seem to retire to early Saturday mornings or
the Disney Channel. Subsequent DA line ups have been DT/RR/TS/DW (1991) and
RR/TS/DW/GT (1992), this Fall should be TS/DW/GT/B! followed by DW/GT/B!/AL
in 1994?, and GT/B!/AL/DD in 1995?).

members of the DarkWing Squad consisting of Darkwing Deer, Darkwing Dodo,
DarkWing Dog and DarkWing Donkey. Steelebeak, Amonia Pine and Ample Grime are
members of the nefarious organization F.O.W.L. whose henchmen are called
Eggmen. Taurus Bulba was 'resurrected' by F.O.W.L. to become the cyborg now
known as the Steerminator. D.W. and the rest are residents of the spralling
metropolis of St. Canard. Darkwing Duck premiered in the Fall of 1991 on DA).

of his career in both animation and comics, only later was it changed to
Goofy. "#" signifies a name which Disney called Goofy in the many shorts
where he portrayed Mr. Average Middle-American Suburbanite. SuperGoof is his
superhero name whenever he wears his red longjohns/blue cape after eating his
Super Goobers <peanuts> he keeps under his hat). The premise of show GOOF
TROOP seems to be Goofy is a single father raising his son Max. GOOF TROOP
picks up on the long-standing fued between Goofy & Bad Pete. Pete is married
and he & his wife, Peg have two children P.J. and Pistol. Max & P.J. are
best friends, and Max is a little uneasy about being known as Goofy Junior.
Traditionally Goofy has always lived in the same hometown as Mickey, but
according to the new series Goofy has moved to Spoonerville. Goof Troop

by other popular Disney characters like Uncle $crooge, Prof. von Drake,
Gosalyn and the cast of Goof Troop(?). It is possible that this show will
be a follow up to Ducktales with Donald returning from the Navy and resuming
his charge of the Nephews. %Concievably there is room to depict the Nephews
interacting with many other (then) teenage versions of Disney's Junior
characters like Morty & Ferdie (Mickey's nephews), Molly (Minnie's niece),
April, May & June (Daisy's nieces), P.J. (Pete's son), Max (Goofy's son),
Newton (Gyro's nephew), Honker & Tank Muddlefoot, Doofus, Bubba Duck and
Webby and many others? Maybe a Disney-style Tiny Toons University?).

The above listing still has several gaps. If anyone has any comments of
corrections or even additions I would be happy to discuss them.
Please keep in mind the three qualifiers I have for this list is:
1) the character has appeared in a comic or cartoon more than twice, and/or
2) the character is above average in importance to other characters on the
list (which may remove the necessity of qualifier #1). For example the
character is a relative with the possibility of recurring at a later time.
3) Characters should not be included just because they are someone's favorite
if they have had only one appearance and then are forgotten.
4) Or the character appeared in the series' pilot/feature-length movie and
there was some indication that the character would conceivably remain
affiliated with the main characters.

Hmm? As I remember it there are different JW officials in different
stories, never with names given, but often with fancy titles (like
"Exalted Grand Marshal" in WDC 132, or "the Supreme Instructor of the
Junior Woodchucks" in WDC 158).
In many of the Woodchucks stories Barks wrote in the seventies (which
he didn't draw) the scout master looks the same though, but he had
different titles everytime (those fancy acronyms like C.O.O.L.H.E.A.D.
or S.A.P.P.Y. P.A.P.P.Y.) but never, I think, a name.
They sure like fancy titles a lot... I just reread WDC 150 where HD&L
not only become Exalted Hightails, but also Chevaliers of the Honor
Guard, Rear Admirals of the Arctic Snows, as well as Commandants of
the Hightails' Hall of Heroes, all in a day!

Hello all,
A couple of years ago I used to read Harpers Mag.
I remember reading that one of their contributors
(I think he's from South America) wrote a book about
the imperialist content in some Disney Comics, especially
Uncle Scrooge. I thought it was a joke so I've forgotten
the title of the book and author's name.
Does anyone know if this book really exists?

the imperialist content in some Disney Comics, especially
Uncle Scrooge. I thought it was a joke so I've forgotten
the title of the book and author's name.

1973 by some South American Marxist group, I think.. mabye
it was Brazilian. There has recently been a re-issuing of
the book (it has a note on the cover about its new edition
status).. I forget the exact name, but I flipped through it
a few times. It looked pretty interesting, and intensly critical.
Full of alot of reproductions of panels by Carl Barks.
The cover has Uncle Scrooge with a face that has been replaced
by the continents of north and south America. Kind of a strange
juxtiposition.
