Greetings to Everyone!

This arrived in this morning's e-mail from Amazon.com:

"Pre-order Uncle Scrooge #391 by Michele Gazzarri Available July 15, 2009"

"In Romano Scarpa's "Fifty Money Bins Caper," Scrooge tries foxing the Beagle Boys by constructing a fleet of new storage bins... and hiding his money in a new one every week! Sounds like a good idea till the construction costs come due - and the Beagles kidnap Donald to make the tracking job simpler! Next, McDuck and Flintheart Glomgold fight over a treasure-rich beach in "Little House By the Sea"; then Scrooge and Donald seek rare violins in Bob Gregory and Tony Strobl's much-demanded "Fabulous Fiddlesticks!" A Don Rosa cover wraps the book."

At the bottom one reads that "Gemstone" is publishing the comic book! Is this just "entropy" at work, so to speak, and in reality no such issue will actually appear?

Interesting! We will see what happens!

Best Wishes!

L. Schulte

For some reason my email never appeared on the list. Something wrong? I retry.

Hi all, especially Italian experts on Disney comics!

I noticed that great author il professore Guido Martina worked for Gazzetta del Popolo newspaper early on his career. I did not found any specific years when he was employed by the paper, but it must have been between 1928-1935. My point is that Gazzetta del Popolo was the first newspaper in Italy to publish Mickey Mouse strip in 1930 and even published an article about it's creators, even mentioning Ub Iwerks. So the question is: was signor Martina working for the paper right at that period and maybe even was translating/editing or even perhaps choosed that strip to be published? Is there any evidence on this presumption?

Best Wishes
Timo

amazon's database simply has not been updated for some reason, so any of
their stores you have pre-ordered (or bought) Disny comics from keeps
sending such e-mails; this will last until their list of upcoming Gemstone
comics is deleted, or until they reach the end of said list.

Probably not. Martina once said, talking about his experience at "Gazzetta del Popolo": "A job I didn't like, and which didn't last long: the newspaper sent me to cover an event related to Torino's sewing-women, who were celebrating some anniversary, then I decided to quit, also because I was more interested in cinema".
He would certainly have mentioned the Mickey Mouse strips, had he been involved...

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like they will continue in the same style as Gemstone. It will only be 24 pages with superhero disney characters. Mostly targetet at kids I guess, so I'm not gonna buy it.

Tom:

I haven't seen any mention of the Disney duck books being picked up by Boom Studios anywhere on their site. The only mention of anything Disney related is the Disney/Pixar Muppet comics deal from May which isn't duck related. I haven't seen any mention of this online... Should I assume this is speculation - or did it actually happen? If so, can anybody show me a reliable source?
My experiences with negotiating a license with Disney (it's a wringer every licensee has to go through, though the Boom folks obviously have experience of their own with that already) lead me to believe it will be some time before we know anything "yea!" or "nay!" on the matter. On the other hand, that means that for the time being no news can be considered, well, neutral news anyway.

Collectors won't be forgotten... they're just not the main target audience.

Not sure if I agree with them relying on pamphlet comics in the age of the graphic novel... but we'll see.
They're definitely not Gladstone/Gemstone. Seems a deliberate choice... for better or worse.

Or, y'know, they could have said as much on Saturday: <http://newsarama.com/comics/060921-Boom-Disney.html> ;-)

"We?re
going to start to approach the Mickey and Donald material from a
completely different direction, and we?re going to try to have
something that at the same time is less the ?greatest hits? reprints
and more dovetails into what the Boom Kids stuff is, which is sort of
an add to and extension of, modern presence creative take on these
classic characters that I think can connect with kids today." ? Ross Richie (BOOM!
Studios? co-founder and Publisher)
Yes, it's disheartening and embarrassing to watch publisher after publisher approach these characters as if they're only interesting when they're superheroes (Gemstone had its share of those stories, especially in their first year with the license). On the other hand, I'm VERY happy that there's no Barks in these books!

<< everyone reaches for tar and feathers >>

Now, hang on: Barks' work is excellent! If you were to say that his are the best Duck stories ever told, I would have a difficult time arguing with you. However... that does not mean their place is in a monthly book (especially one that's under 48 pages). And so I'm very happy that the folks at BOOM! seem to agree.

Barks and the other "greats" all belong in long-format collections like the CBL. Classic such as those are cheapened when they're used as cheap filler for monthly books. The periodical pamphlet -- at least in the U.S.A. -- is expected to contain all-new, serialized works. Reprints in periodicals give readers the impression that the publisher is just trying to save a few bucks (and, to be honest, that *is* very often the case).

So while I don't agree that these particular stories are the best choices for BOOM!'s relaunch of the Disney comics, I do believe that they're a better fit for the existing U.S. market (that is, a better fit than issues full of Barks, Rosa, Van Horn, Scarpa, Gottfredson, etc.).

And now that I've stuck my neck out on their behalf, I look forward to BOOM! proving me right in saying all that. ;-)

The main problem with reprints of Barks stories is that I already have all of
his stories, so I'm effectively paying several times for the same story. I find
it good that Boom plan to publish other stories (although I've already got
Wizards of Mickey in Swedish).

Subject: Help me place this duck story

A friend of mine form work remembers reading a duck story to her son
that went something like this: Uncle Scrooge is nervous that his money
is going to stolen out of the bin and decides to move it in to a
pyramid. The Beagle Boys catch wind of this and build a fake pyramid,
where Scrooge places his money.

Can anyone place this story? She is eager to reread it and I told her
I would help her place it.

Thanks!

No, Amazon is just completely out of touch. They're so big and deal in such volume that they have no idea that Gemstone is finis.

Thanks, Armando!

It was just tempting idea that he might have been responsible for starting Mickey in the first place in Italy.

Quote is from Topolino, Pecos Bill, Il Professore -book?

I contacted German publisher Ehapa about this a while ago and their answer
was that this English edition is currently not available outside Germany
(and Austria, Switzerland). They did however have a lot of people asking
about this and they were investigating possibilities of distributing the
title internationally through other channels such as Amazon. That was a few
weeks ago and I don't know if anything has changed in the meantime.

Kind regards,

Quite mind-boggling why a German publisher would produce an english
language comic book, and then not make it available outside
german-speaking countries.

Well, they're not targeting the international market but rather schools in
Germany and German kids who want to learn English. They even have bulk
discounts for schools. And there's the rights issue that probably prevents
them from publishing Disney material in other countries.

I see. I just discovered it here:

So they are going to teach german children to speak english by reading
danish stories.. :-)

That's right, but they were all *written* in English to begin with, so
perhaps this is a more "clean" product than the normal German books.

I guess this is also why they left out the Italian stories that you'd
normally find in the Lustige Taschenbooks.
