I am new to DCML here and this is also my first message. It is about Dickie
Duck and Scrooge McDuck. Dickie is the granddaughter of Glittering Goldie.
But who is her husband? I am against Rosa, but I think because the cousins
sometimes call her cousin that her father is none other than Scrooge McDuck.
Julian Hoving
Gideon McDuck is as you probably know the brother / half-brother of Uncle
Scrooge. It was conceived in 1956 by Romano Scarpa. I think it's nice to
have a discussion here about his relationship with Uncle Scrooge and his
birth year. I suppose Gideon is the half-brother of Scrooge because he
looks a lot younger.

As a rule, in the Disney universe people do not have children; only nephews!

Thus, we may never know who Dickie's father was. However, given how often
Scrooge opens his wallet, when it comes to Dickie (see, e.g., the welcoming
that he organized, when she first came to Duckburg in "Arriva Paperetta Y?-Y?"
(I TL 577-A)), it doesn't require a lot of imagination to deduce who her
grandfather is, even if it is never mentioned explicitly!

Who then is the grandfather if I may ask.

Although, the Phantom Blot *does* have a child: his daughter, the Phantom
Brat!

A certain prospector, who spent a month alone with Dickie's grandmother in a
cabin in the wilderness of Klondike, perhaps.

But now I do not understand why it can not be an Uncle Scrooge, but another
gold prospector from the Klondike? And you have it all the time that they
have no children in the dot world, but only nephews. I want to remind you
of Grandma Duck. Most say that is a grandmother of Donald, so then you have
grandmothers and according to my theory it is the mother of Donald and the
grandmother of the nephews.
Julian Hoving
Who agrees that the theory is correct that Grandma Duck is the mother of
Donald and not the grandmother. I invented this theory from the facts that,
first of all, Grandma Duck is the sister of Uncle Scrooge. Secondly, in her
second comic on which she was first seen in flesh and blood. * Donald says
that grandmother comes, when he tells the nephews that grandmother is
coming, he probably means that his grandmother is his mother. Also in
another comic of Al Taliaferro she says son to Donald. In Donald's Grandma
Duck the cousins also say when they come: "Grandma". Do not be fooled by
the title.

JULIAN:

Do you know of many Klondike prospectors other than Uncle Scrooge in the Duck universe? Even if you do, do you know of any others, who have a soft spot for Dickie Duck? How can I make it any plainer, other than actually saying it, who it seems, that Scarpa wanted us to think, is Dickie's grandfather? (He didn't say it explicitly, so I'm not going to do so, either!)

You turn my question around. I asked why he could not be and not why it
could be someone else.

JULIAN:

Of course it could be, but there is no indication that it was someone else, other than the "Disney characters have nephews, not children" rule, every reason why it wasn't someone else (a young man and a young woman, who are obviously fond of each other, staying alone in a cabin for a month, are very likely to have sex, which in the days before birth control would result in them becoming parents) and, as I mentioned, we have indications that it did happen (Scrooge feels closer to Dickie than Donald, spending money on her, while treating Donald like trash, implying that Scrooge feels closer to his old flame's granddaughter than his sister's son.).

If Scarpa did not want us to think that Dickie is Scrooge's granddaughter, he would have made her an unspecified cousin of Donald, like Gladstone and Fethry, complying with the "only nephews" rule.

So, yes, it could be someone else, but I'd have a very hard time believing it.

But, Grandma Duck is *not* the sister of Scrooge McDuck. A look at the Duck
Family Tree by Don Rosa will confirm this, *and* that Grandma Duck is
Donald's grandmother. Here it is:

In some old Italian stories, she is the sister of Scrooge McDuck indeed.
Nobody consider this canonical anymore, still :P

I know that myself, but I am not a fan of Rosa. Maybe there are more people
who are not good at the theories of Rosa, so that's why I wrote it here.

Merrill, Oregon, Carl Barks birthplace has just announced the development of
a new park to be called The Good Duck park. I'll try to forward a picture of
the announcement in the Klamath Falls newspaper.
