I always enjoy going to Amazon and searching for Disney books. I can have them sorted by publication date so I can get a good idea of how many hundreds of dollars I'll need for the next several months' worth of books. Amazon lists a comic-book adaptation of the 2013 Planes movie, set for release on October 27, 2015. The title is Walt Disney's Comics & Stories: Planes. It's described as a 64-page paperback to be published by Papercutz and is "Book 1" in a series. I dont know if this title will continue the numbering of the WDC&S comics.
In the 1950s-60s-70s, many different Disney movies were adapted for comic books. I hope Planes is the first of a new series of movie adaptations. Hey, Disney, how about an adaptation of last year's Big Hero 6?

Thank you for posting that link. Three of the interior pages of the Planes comic are shown...and the artwork is really nice! Papercutz is a New York publishing company which has re-issued the old Classics Illustrated stories and published a new series of Tales From The Crypt. I'm assuming that the comiXology Planes and the Papercutz Planes are the same. I look forward to the upcoming comic because I prefer my comics on good ol'-fashioned paper and not in digital format.
Does anyone know why the upcoming Planes comic will bear the title of Walt Disney's Comics & Stories? The last issue, in 2011, was #720. Considering that Planes is a movie adaptation and there will be no Mickey or Donald or Chip 'n' Dale stories included, I wouldn't think that the Planes comic would be numbered as WDC&S #721...but then why would the publisher use the WDC&S name at all? I is confused.

I don't know. I would like it if they brought back Walt Disney's Comics and Stories in it's traditional form and the other traditional Disney Comics as well.

The Walt Disney Company launched its own comic publishing company in 1990. It was cleverly called Disney Comics. There were originally ten different monthly titles. A few four-issue series also came out before Disney Comics folded---no pun intended---in 1993. Disney now owns Marvel Comics, and Marvel has published the four-issue Seekers Of The Weird series and a few comic books featuring Pixar characters. Disney and Marvel have said that they have no plans of putting out new comics featuring Mickey, Donald, Scrooge and the gang. Other publishers are putting out reprints...but why is Disney not giving any American publisher the license to put out new Disney stories with the classic characters? No offense, Dusty Crophopper, but you're certainly not on a par with Donald Duck!

IDW has a license for regularly published comics with the traditional characters. They just haven't released any yet.

IDW's comics will indeed be "regularly published" and will feature the "traditional characters" but I believe all the comics will be reprints. Pictures of two of the covers, Carl Barks Uncle $crooge and Don Rosa Uncle $crooge, are on the Disney Comics Worldwide blog at http://www.wolfstad.com/dcw/blog/2014/10/monthly-disney-comics-to-return-to-the-united-states-in-2015/
That page also lists the 75 countries where Disney comics are still available. I'd love for IDW or another publisher to translate the foreign stories into English and start releasing them in the United States.

I think these pictures come from the expensive & deluxe "Artist Editions" that IDW will publish. We still haven't seen any sign of the regular titles and what they may contain.

Btw, when you talk about reprints do you mean

i. the material that is already published in the US (by Gladstone, or Gemstone, or Boom, etc.)
ii. foreign material that may be printed in English (but has already been published in other countries) or
iii. new stories with the classic characters by the American publisher?

The third option is quite dim (there haven't been new stories with the classic characters since Gemstone times). If new, unseen in the US, stories are published by IDW, I believe they will originate from Egmont, Italy or the Netherlands...

I think you have forgotten about the Boom Studios Era. In their last few issues of the core four titles they printed some classic stories even though it was just for a few issues.

I certainly hope they will be publishing stories from Egmont, Sanoma and Italian Disney. I know that they won't be able to afford a new, US production of the traditional characters.

Maybe They Will. I think it would be nice to see stories from those aforementioned companies.

I believe the IDW comics will all be reprints of Disney stories from Dell, Gold Key, Gladstone and Gemstone. (I left out Whitman on purpose.) Boom Comics reprinted several of the Italian Disney stories---translated into English, of course---but in 2010 some fans on the thread at http://dcf.outducks.org/viewtopic.php?id=731 noted that many of the other Italian stories contained a lot of cruelty and violence.
If no American publisher can obtain the rights to release US versions of the foreign comics, perhaps we can convince Egmont, Abril, Disney Italy or one of the other foreign publishers to start putting out English-language versions of their comics and exporting them to the US. I'd gladly pay the import fee in order to get new Disney comics!

As said above we have yet to see any news about the monthly series mentioned in IDW??s press release. And looking through the lists of upcoming titles on PREVIEWSworld nothing seems to be scheduled for the next months. Also as a new publisher of Disney comics I kind of expected something for Free Comic Book Day, but no comics with any Disney-related material is listed in the gold and silver line-up.
But IDW is not the only company with a new license to publish Disney comics. Joe Books is about to publish a Darkwing Duck book reprinting revised versions of the stories published by BOOM! But the good news is that this book is going to lead into a new series with new Darkwing Duck stories. Joe Books also just published a Frozen Cinestory (a "comic" made up of screencaps with speech balloons). So it looks like they have a license to publish some other Disney stuff too.
James Silvani, the artist of the new Darkwing Duck stories also does work on IDW??s Turtles comics. So who knows, maybe IDW will hire him to do Disney work too.
Another potential American artist for classic Disney comics is Jonathan Gray. He started on a Mickey Mouse story for both Gemstone and Boom, but they lost the license before the story was finished. You can see the unfinished art on his deviantart. I would love to see that story finished and published one day!

Back on topic: The creators for Papercutz??s Planes book and the ones listed on comiXology are the same. So I??m pretty sure it??s the same adaption that is going to be published by Papercutz. The same creators also made some small original comic stories based on Planes. Some were published in US in the magazine "Disney/Pixar Presents" (first published by Marvel, later Disney Publishing and now discontinued I think)

Wow, just minutes after I wrote this the list of April titles was published on PREVIEWSworld. Look what is listed:

FEB150309 UNCLE SCROOGE #1 $3.99

FEB150310 UNCLE SCROOGE #1 SUBSCRIPTION VAR $3.99

It says "(W) Jonathan Gray, Rodolfo Cimino (A) Romano Scarpa (CA) Giorgio Cavazzano" but that must be wrong. Looks like the cover is by Jonathan Gray that I mentioned above. And judging from the cover the story is the Italian "Zio Paperone e il tetrabassotto", never before published in the US.
