The money woes didn't happen overnight. It just took this long for the media to pick up on it.
I was a colorist for Gemstone, and we freelancers were having difficulty getting paid going back to the summer of 2006.
It got so bad, that I threatened to withhold "Night of the Saracen" from Gemstone until they were paid up (it was a long story that was nearly half of an issue of Uncle Scrooge.) At that point I was already owed between $2,000-3,000 in unpaid invoices. I ultimately let them run the story simply because I didn't want to make things any harder for the editors, as I knew the financial difficulties were out of their hands. After that, I only colored one very short Gyro story in 2008 and that was that.
