The COA entry lists "rewrite" for Barks. So, that information may have come from Barks' pay register notes. The original writer may have been Chase Craig (who was Western Publishing staff writer at that time (late 1948). It could also have been Carl Buettner, Barks' art/story editor at Western. But the original writer could have been ANY staff writer at that time, or even an outside, freelance writer, who just sold the story idea to Western. I've never read anything more detailed on the origin of that story. If more information on it existed, it would have been touched upon in "The Carl Barks Library".

I also wonder if the story was written with another character in mind, then Donald and the kids were substituted in when Barks recieved the script.
I checked through the CBL looking for more info, but was unable to find anything. I wasn't sure if it wasn't there, or if I missed it because I don't have set 10 with the index.

Barks re-wrote the story, and he drew it. So, it IS his story. It just might be a little weaker a storyline, than other stories that were derived from Barks' original inspiration.
