GeoX just mentioned his enjoyment of the scene in one of Rosa's homage/parody comic "covers" wherein Donald dismembers Gladstone. As it happens, yesterday I got an old copy of the British Disney Magazine 2 27 with a story by Werner Wejp-Olsen where Gladstone and Donald are in a skating race. Gladstone's luck plays no role in the story, but his obnoxiousness does. He repeatedly delays Donald (the faster skater) by throwing things in his way, freezing his skate to the ice, melting ice in front of him, etc., and he does win the race in the end. But only because Donald takes time out to help a fisherman who is being pulled under the ice by a huge fish. Donald is invited by the saved (millionaire) fisherman to a great banquet, to which he brings Daisy, and Gladstone is left shivering outside in the snow, looking through a window at the others enjoying the banquet. In other words, Donald essentially comes out on top, due to his being a better person. I found this very satisfying!
Here's my question: Do you know of other stories where Donald triumphs over Gladstone in such a way?

Yes, I do remember reading a comic in french from the magazine "les tresors de picsou" in which it was a village, donald was there, but suddenly gladstone gets there, and of course he was famous for his luck so the whole village said their chances of winning were 0 so they quit, of course donald didn't give up, he wanted to teach a lesson to gladstone, in which who ever won several competitions that person was going to be able to be in a cereal cover you know the sport type one, and was also going to represent the village in the winter olympic games that were being held in Norway, obviously gladstone won, but there was a man taking pictures, and found out why he won, HIS LUCK, they told him that they didn't want someone in the olympics because of luck, but ability, so gladstone was chosen to be in the lucky charms type of cereal, and donald went to the oyimpics, and of course the olyimpics was the grand prize so pretty much donald won...

Ah, interesting--that's Rosa's "From Duckburg to Lillehammer," and while Donald does get to represent Duckburg at the Olympics, I didn't register that as Donald winning out over Gladstone, since Donald's Olympic ski jump is a spectacular failure (and Gladstone is actually happy with his own outcome). But it's true, as you say, that Donald does win out over Gladstone in their competition, because the ruling is that one can't win by luck.

There's a Carl Barks story where Donald competes with Gladstone in a fishing contest in Puget Sound. Gladstone wins first prize with Donald's fish that he lost when hit by a runaway speedboat and Gladstone wins a snazzy car. While losing his fish, though, Donald ends up rescuing a little girl and is rewarded enough money to buy a car way better than Gladstone's. I have this story in Gladstone Comic Album Series #15. It doesn't tell where it was originally published.

Cool, thanks! It sounds like Wejp-Olsen's story is quite reminiscent of that Barks story--though the happy ending for Donald in W-O's is more one of communal celebration. I will check out the Barks story; I don't have album 15 of the WDCS, so I'll have to find me a copy of DD 280, in which that story was reprinted.

Hey, I wrote about this story! It's true that in a broader sense he wins out because he's a better person, but that's usually the case when he wins. As far as the actual act of saving the girl, though--that strikes me as being more luck than anything else. He was flung into a situation in which there wasn't much else he could do. I guess it's debatable, but I kind of doubt Gladstone in would've done anything differently.

IIRC, at least in Barks' canon, Donald emerges victorious most of the time, save occasional times were they both lose.
Just from the top of my head:
"The Salmon Derby"
"Race to the South Seas"
"Rival Beachcombers"
"Turkey Trouble"
"The Trail of the Unicorn"
"The Gilded Man"
"North of the Yukon"
All stories where Donald wins, either against Gladstone or along with him.
I'm curious about tales where Gladstone undeniably wins against Donald. The only ones I can think of are"Link Hijinxs" and "My Lucky Valentine"

"Gemstone Hunters" is another one. But you're right; Gladstone rarely scores an unambiguous win.

Sorry to revive a long-dead topic, but I have to submit "The Annual Speedskating Race of the Burg of Ducks" to the list of stories where Donald comes out "ahead" in the end! I know there will be people who say it's not "really" canon, but I'm calling a spade a spade and saying it counts for me, at least.

I searched for a long time for a copy of Speed Skating World #8 to purchase so I'd have the story in my collection, but the internet has failed me in this mission...and I don't know anyone in Europe to ask for assistance finding one. Eventually, when I realized that Don Rosa regularly attended a yearly convention held in a city about 4 hours away from where I live, I professionally enhanced and printed the pages for this story, added a front and back cover, and took it with me. Don graciously drew Donald on the cover in his speedskating gear for me, and signed it. It'll be one of those things that I treasure until I'm gone!

Gladstone wasn't in North of the Yukon. Maybe you mean Luck of the North?
