Topic: Number of comics drawn by carl barks?

(21 messages)

Recently I´m looking around to purchase more comics and fill my collection.

But soon I realised that I didn't even know the exact number of barks comics!
Whilst http://barks.de/index_ger.html is selling "all 500 barks comics" (in german of course), on other pages I find that barks actually published 659 comics, including one-pagers.

And so I'm getting very confused over how many comics carl barks has actually drawn, and whether or not the carl barks library actually includes them all?

Thank you.

I don't know how many individual stories and gag pages he has drawn, but you can look it up on COA in Creators, under Carl Barks Index. i think he drew (penciled and inked) over 6500 pages, and an additionall 700+ in penciled script layouts (1 Unclke Scrooge, 3 Donald Ducks and many Junior Woodchucks).

Carl Barks actually drew 659 comic book stories (700 if you count Pluto Saves the Ship) but he provided scripts for other artists stories on occasion after his retirement. I don't know the exact specific number of stories he contributed to but he drew quite a lot of stories during his time.

I still hope that this great German collection of Barks comics will come in Englisch some day.
Does anyone know what 159 comics are missing in the collection?

"Pluto Saves The Ship" should certainly count as a story Barks drew. So that should be 660 or 700. I don't think that Pluto Saves The Ship should count for 41 stories.
The Junior Woodchuck scripts plus the three DD and one US scripts would add about 30 more stories. I'm also not sure of the count of stories he drew for MGM comics (including Barney Bear, Benny Burro, Barney Bear & Benny Burro and Happy Hound. He also drew one Andy Panda and one Porky Pig. I wonder if his Mickey Mouse story was counted in the 659?

It was Robb. You should visit Beru's Disney Comics Fan Page. You'll find every story that Barks drew himself except for Pluto Saves the Ship The Junior Woodchucks stories and the other stories that Barks drew scripts but didn't write after 1967.

The very same Carl Barks Collection is published in Finland and in all Scandinavian countries as well, and as far as I know, it will contain ALL Barks' Disney-comics, including Pluto Saves Ship + Junior Woodchucks (drawn by Jippes). Six boxes have come out in Finland and 8 (?) in other nordic countries. Whole set of 10 boxes/30 books contains appr. 6 500 pages of comics + hundreds and hundreds of pages of articles and covers. Also, there might be additional volumes containing all paintings and perhaps even non-Disney comics. Not sure yet.

@Roger: the fan page is really great. I still wonder how much time the guy must have: 48h/day ;)

I don't know Charlie Brown. He must have a lot of time though.

Hi Timoro. Yes "The Collected Works of Carl Barks" printed in Scandinavia and Germany, and Finland, is almost finished. We have 9 of the 10 boxes in Germany, and I believe already 9 have been released in Scandinavia. They will have all Barks' Disney fully-drawn stories, plus all his scribbled scripts, plus all stories based on his written scripts and notes, and comments to fans in the 30 volumes in the ten boxes. In addition, the publishers are planning additional volumes (one box of three volumes for sure, possibly plus another box of three). These are said (rumoured) to include Carl's non-Disney finished comic book stories (Barney Bear/Benny Burro, Happy Hound, Porky Pig, Andy Panda, (a Droopy script?), plus all of Carl's oil paintings and pre-Disney professional drawing (Calgary Eye Opener/Judge Magazine, Coo Coo Magazine, and gags sold to newspapers. It MAY also include drawings for fans, and other artwork of his that might be gathered together.

Disney doesn't seem to keep it too strict with the copyright of comics. Beside the fan page is also this guy who sells DVDs with scans of stories. Perhaps that's part of the problem, why too less people buy English Disney comics?
@Robb_K: In what language are the books published? Is there a collection in English? Or "just" the Scandinavian and German version?
Robb_K
The "Collected Works of Carl Barks" /"Carl Barks Collection" is being published in German, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish and Finnish. Gemstone Disney Comics has announced they will print a version (English). I don't know if that version will be as the same high quality as the Scandinavian and German printings. I do hope it will be published. I also hope there will be a Dutch version. I haven't heard of any plans for that, or a French or Italian one.
Charlie Brown
I really hope that Gemstone will publish the English version. Does' anyone know the current state of the project? Amazon still lists the first book for November 5, 2008: http://www.amazon.de/Carl-Barks-Collection-Set-1/dp/1603600639/
The quality of the German version is great. But the pice is high as well: EUR 1500 for the complete collection. But that would be okay for me, if the quality is high as well.
