Topic: Rysek's drawings and comics

Hello, this is my first post on this forum. I come from Poland and I would like to draw some comics and drawings for Disney's Comics publishers in the future. I'd like to hear some comments about my drawings from you. This is my newest picture: http://rysownik.deviantart.com/art/Gold-87167259 . I have been doing it for four hours, but in my opinion it is very ugly.
I have a gallery on deviantArt. Click here, if you want to visit it: http://www.rysownik.deviantart.com
My favourite comic book author is Don Rosa - I was inspired to draw the ducks by "A letter from home" - it was totally diffrent comics than Italian comics I could read in "Gigant Poleca"...
I have been drawing a comic - it is called "The Nordish Ring" but unfortunately you can see only the first part on deviantArt - I didn't finish it, because the vacation were over, and than the school began :/. But I will finish it during this year summer vacation :-) - and probably during September I will translate it into English.
I hope you'll enjoy my drawings - please tell me, if you like it!!!

Hello Rysek,
Your 2 Duck drawings are very nice and colourful, but you will need to improve in proportions and fluidity of your characters, and placement of implication of weight. How long have you been drawing? Have you had any formal training in drawing?
Rysek
Dear Robb,
I don't really have any formal experience - I'm only 14 years old. I've been drawing ducks for two years. I am still practising the proprieties you wrote about (and I have secound account on deviantArt only for scraps - http://www.rysoo.deviantart.com). I have a question: Which drawings did you enjoyed?
Olivier
Hi & welcome, Rysek!

That's a really good start.
Are they drawn directly on computer?

I'm not much of an artist, but here are my comments...

"Gold"

The expression is great-- though I would not have chosen it for such a scene: why this devilish air?
The hands need volume; they look flat and skinny; the knuckles (your parentheses on the fist) should be at the base of each finger.
The tail seems too pointy to me; I would curve it a bit at the end.
I do'nt know what to do, but the whiskers look flat.

The trees, the blades of grass, the mountains and the coulds are all great; the snow, too.

I love the colors/coloring; very nice sky.
I don't what's missing to make them less computery on the jacket, but there are some nice touches-- on the left arm, in particular, adding some creases with different shades (same thing on the left foot).
I'm not quite sure how much I like it or not, and that may also be because of the brownish hue, but the beak is very interesting; the colors and shadows give it much volume.

"Just Love"

Odd: the somewhat blurry/smudgy softness and the black contour that makes a halo around the characters.
Mistake: girls don't have Adam's apples ( :p )-- if it's not what you meant, it's what it looks like, anyway.

As above: whiskers & hands.
The "scales" on Goldie's chest are all vertical; they should follow the curve of Goldie's breasts.

The colors on the dress are great, and give it both volume and texture (this includes the fur rim).
Scrooge's jacket has some nice details in the coloring as well, but looks computery, once again; this must be due to the highlights, I think.
I'm sure you can color the gem in Goldie's hairpiece a lot better than by adding a white diagonal bar across it.
Goldie's hair is beautiful, too: very nicely drawn and superbly colored-- not just filling in nor adding rough shadows, but drawing as well, quite subtly.

And... you missed two spots between the bracelets and the arm when coloring the background. :p ;p
Since you're doing this on computer, use layers. This will make any changes easier and avoid such blanks.

I wish I had been that good at your age; I still can't draw the ducks' bodies well.

I'm not drawing on computer - I only do lineart on PC! And these two drawings are not my first - you can see much more here -http://www.rysownik.deviantart.com/gallery - as I wrote above, I'm still practising ;-). I will present you the original version of "The Gold" - http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=zdjecie233bx0.png.

I don't understand: if you "do lineart on PC", this does mean you draw directly on the computer (in other words, you don't scan), doesn't it?

I will present you the original version of "The Gold"

Ah, so you do draw in pencil first; the "inking" ("lineart") is so neat and thin on your colored drawings, I thought you had drawn it directly (with the mouse or a graphic tablet); the final colored version is not quite the same as this original version in pencil, though: the "inking" is indeed done on the computer, then.

Lots of great drawings-- including the pencil version of "Just Love"-- which confirms, as I had seen, that you are very good at shading.

I love # 13 & # 14!

(13) the beak is odd, mostly because it's too low (or the eyes are too high), but it's the whole scene I like.
The shading is so well done the street really apepars to be dark and lonely and a bit scary. One broken lamppost (instead of two functional) might heighten the effect.

(14) Fergus is really well drawn, with a very good expression; I'm sure in a very few years you will be able to correct the mistakes on the legs (short "thighs") and the arms & hands (too stiff and pointy fingers) and make a perfect version of this drawing.

Regarding # 8, a fellow French Disney ducks lover gave me a link a few months ago to a series of superb drawings by a very gifted Italian girl (NuttyIsa) done in the same fashion, ie, human version of the ducks (sorry, I can't give a direct link: for some reason, I can't see her gallery-- or yours, for that matter).
Rysek
Thanks for the comment!
I know NuttyIsa's drawings, sometimes I comment her drawings, sommetimes she comments mine. You have to switch on the cookies to see deviantArt galleries - than all should be OK.

Rysek,-it's a good early try for a 14-year old. Try to see if you can take a formal drawing class in school (if such is available). Practice drawing (quick sketches) people and animals moving. You need to learn about volumes of space bodies take up, and how to show where the weight is placed. Scrooge's right foot is on edge, but shouldn't be, based upon how his leg is positioned, related to his body and where you've put the weight. Your figures look flat. Sketch the figure first in roundish general shapes. Then add the details later.
Here is a drawing of The Three Little Pigs. Notice the use of the spheres, egg-shapes and cylindrical tubes (not just circles, ovals and other 2-D outlined shapes). The "plum line" (centre line, dividing the figure in half) defines the angle we are looking at them, and where symmetrical body parts go. The weight is shifted so they are balanced. But you can put weight in the "wrong" place, IF you want the characters to be off balance.

Here is Br'er Rabbit. He is sticking out his front leg to walk round a corner. Notice where the weight is. See that he is constructed with rounded 3-dimensional shapes, pieced together. His centre line shows from which angle we are viewing him.

Here is Donald viewed very much from the side. Yet placing a centre line along his body reveals a slight angle, that, along with rounded shapes assembled to form his body, provides a 3-Dimensional feel, together with proper weighting (he is leaning well forward).
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/4430/hatupdon2ru5.jpg
Here is Br'er Buzzard (he's really a vulture-Buzzards are a very different bird). He is walking, balanced. His parts are spheres, egg shapes and cylinders, too. His arms are narrow rectangular prisms, because he is a bird, and those are his wings. Wings are almost flat.
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/6312/barendbuizerdou6.jpg
Here is Black Pete tossing Mickey. Notice where the weight is, and how the characters are constructed with rounded 3-D shapes, and the centre line defines the angle. Notice how Pete's 2 legs share the weight bearing.

Here are different views of Donald's head. Notice the centre line showing you where the symmetrical body parts should be located. The head starts with a sphere. The beak is a slightly rounded almost flat quadrilateral, added onto the sphere. The neck is a cylinder, attached at the underside of the head's sphere, around its centre point. The lower right Donald has a "squished" egglike head shape, to give him a pressured look of having a headache from frustration. Normally, he should have a sphere shape for his head.

I love those Donald sketches, Robb! They're absolutely splendid.
