...and it's been staring us in the face this whole time.
Gideon's always been the most difficult character to square with Scrooge's past in Barks-Rosa, as his existence apparently requires Fergus McDuck to have either been unfaithful or had a brief relationship between Downy's death and his own, neither, seeing as how devoted he was to her, seems particularly likely. I know fans who like their Duck stories to all be in the same universe typically go for the latter. However, there's a simpler explanation, with a bit of canon backing it up, no less.

That right there is Giovan Carpi's Italian Duck family tree. You can see Gideon there, on the farthest left. as you can see, he's not on the same limb as Scrooge, as would be implied of a brother, but on the limb next to him with long-lost cousin Cyril, implying that Gideon is his brother!
So, there you have it: Gideon is (most likely) Scrooge's cousin. I'd assume "younger brother" is a term of endearment, then. To the extent anyone can be dear to Scrooge, I guess.
