I've got the set pre-ordered. I'm very excited. I really have loved this collection, at least with the dailies so far. The Sunday pages are going to be a very fascinating look in to the past, with the more modern style of comics (compared to Prince Valiant, which has fantastic artwork, but captions rather than word balloons) while still retaining a very traditional panel layout. Great fun for me! I may even have to upgrade my Calvin and Hobbes collection to match it.
And Gottfredson continues to prove the rule for me that comic strips work best with small characters, since you can see their whole body and do more with it in the art.

No??but it's arguably the most iconic image of Mickey associated with that story, so for right now we're trying it out. (Feedback?)

Hey, whaddaya know, volume two didn't take ninety-three years to arrive. Praise the lord! (and pass the ammunition.) Looks good as always. If I'd been paying attention, I would no doubt have known in advance that it would contain Gottfredson's non-Mickey Sundays, but I wasn't, so I didn't. Super cool! Well done, ladies and gents. Now BACK TO WORK! :mad:

I finally got this one a couple days ago. As much as I love Carl Barks' work, the Floyd Gottfredson books have them beat in terms of "extras", like commentaries and rare materials from foreign editions. It has been a joy to read these strips in their original format and also getting to read strips that Gladstone had to skip in their monthly comics in the 80's, where I first read many of these stories (as well as Abbeville Press' Mickey Mouse: Best Comics and the budget version of Another Rainbow's Mickey Mouse in Color. I wish I'd hung on to both of those hardcovers).

I got my copy today. The additional essays and material are really great.
One word to the content: I was really surprised to see Donald with yellow feathers. Was what the way it was printing in the first Sundays?

I got my boxed set a couple days ago. The books are wonderful. Nice to see the Manny Gonzalez work and the late Gottfredson, as well, and also the commercial art. I hope I get to enjoy the whole set, together for at least 20 years. That would bring me to age 98.

In which daily strip book will donald show up?
I had purchased the first gottfredson box set and had a hard time getting through it, ended up selling it because I couldn't imagine ever wanting to read it again. So when the sundays were released I thought I would give it a second chance. I don't know if it was the increase in gag stories, being in color, or simply having donald around but I loved the Sunday releases. Now I'm starting to second guess ignoring the daily strips. Since donald is my favorite character I think I'm going to throw myself back into the dailies when he comes in but I'm not sure which book or if that has already happened. Do i have a long wait?

The MM dailies were not great from the beginning, but already in vol 2 Gottfredson is showing his skills as a storyteller. In book 3-5 you'll find him at his peak. (IMO)

Check panel 2 of page 207 of Call of the Wild. What kind of acid is coming out of the bath faucets?!?! Surely couldn't be healthy for the nephews...
