From January 1941 to January 1948, Western Publishing (under the Dell Imprint) published an animal comic titled Animal Comics. Okay, not a clever name...but the first issue marked the debut of Pogo Possum and Albert Alligator, new characters created by Walt Kelly, a former storyboard artist and animator at Walt Disney Productions. Pogo and Albert and their friends lived in the Okeefenokee Swamp in Georgia. Kelly launched a Pogo comic strip in 1948 and drew it until 1972 when he became ill. Kelly would die in 1973. His wife Selby, assisted by other artists, kept the strip going until 1975. The strip was revived in 1989 and lasted until 1994.
I loved the political humor that infused the strip in the 1950s-60s. Kelly made fun of politicians by portraying them as pompous animals. He drew FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover as a bulldog, President Lyndon Johnson as a longhorn steer, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew as a hyena and anti-Communist crusader Senator Joseph McCarthy as a wildcat named Simple J. Malarkey. The Dell Pogo comics were collected in a 2014 volume published by Hermes Press and the daily and Sunday comic strips are being released in a multi-volume series by Fantagraphics, but I'd love to see the Dell comics re-issued by IDW in their original format. IDW is reprinting the old Popeye comic books and calling them Popeye Classics. I'd love to see a Pogo Classics series.
I also loved The Fox & The Crow comics.....but those were published by DC. Of course if IDW could get the rights to reprint them, I wouldn't complain.

I've always heard that the Tom and Jerry and Woody Woodpecker comics are good and still done in the tradition of the old Dell's. They still make new stories for T&J over there so they'd be interesting to see if nothing else.

Hermes Press, founded in 2001 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, published the first volume of Walt Kelly's Pogo: The Complete Dell Comics in March of 2014. Volume 2 came out in November and Volume 3 will be released on July 7, 2015. Each volume retails for $60. Sixty dollars! As Albert would say, "Rowr bazzle!" Now you know why I hope IDW can get the rights to reprint the individual comic-book issues.

I think I paid around 40 dollars for each, and they are worth each one!

Freddy Milton's Woody comics were planned to be published in the 80s by Fantagraphics but complications in securing the rights prevented this. They are on Freddy Milton's website but I really don't enjoy reading comic books in a non physical form. BTW the guy I mentioned who's Tom and Jerry work I want to see localized, Oscar Martin, is like a Tom and Jerry version of Carl Barks. He's worked with them since the 80s. When I get the chance I'll post some links with info about him.

When did Oscar Martin draw his stories? I don't remember any Tom and Jerry stories being like Carl Barks' work, either in terms of the stories OR the artwork. The premise of Tom always trying to catch and eat Jerry and Tuffy, and the mice trying to prevent that, using trickery and brain power severely limits the potential storylines. Such stories must have simple plotlines heavily based on physical action, and thus, end up being not very rich in character development and humour, other than slapstick.

Can you refer us to a few excellent "Barkslike stories" and what issues of which magazines in which they were first published in USA?

I see now that his name should have been written with an accent mark (con accento) on the "i" in Martin, and it would be pronounced "OhhSkarrr Marrrteeeen", as he was a Spaniard from Barcelona. His artwork is a little too modern for me. Given the subject matter and character restraints, I'm not sure it would be possible to write Tom & Jerry stories that would interest me very much.
